De Tsjech Borek Sipek (Praag, 1949) is een wereldberoemde architect die vooral naam heeft gemaakt als ontwerper van glasobjecten en meubels. Dans cette premiere monographie consacree a Marc du Plantier (1901-1975), decorateur majeur du xxe siecle, l'historien de l'art Yves Badetz renoue le fil de son oeuvre a travers ses carnets de croquis et les lettres relatant a sa femme le detail de ses installations. Apres une formation d'architecte a l'Ecole nationale superieure des beaux-arts et de peintre a l'academie Julian, Marc du Plantier debute sa carriere en 1928. Des les premieres realisations se met en place son vocabulaire architectural, caracterise par la rigueur des lignes, le travail sur la couleur, la lumiere indirecte et le jeu des miroirs. Art qui atteint son apogee rue du Belvedere, ou Anne et Marc du Plantier recoivent le Tout-Paris des annees 30. Suivront l'appartement dominant la baie d'Alger, considere comme un des sommets de la decoration de son temps, les palais madrilenes ou, de 1938 a 1949, il developpe un neoclassicisme remarquable, les appartements parisiens des annees 50, le salon de l'ambassade francaise d'Ottawa. Au debut des annees 60, la disparition des commandes privees pousse le createur a s'installer a Mexico, ou il fonde la societe Artedecor, puis a Los Angeles, avant de revenir a Paris par la voie de l'Orient. De ce contact avec le pop americain nait le travail qu'il developpe en 1968, creant a partir de nouveaux materiaux des modeles destines a l?edition pour la galerie Lacloche ou pour la salle a manger de Maurice Rheims, sans jamais se departir de sa rigueur classique.
