Gustave Serrurier, known as Serrurier-Bovy, was born in Liege in 1858 and died in the same city in 1910. He was one of most original figures in the Belgian avant-garde and the international art revival which characterised the decorative arts and architecture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Initially destined for architecture, he switched to the design and manufacture of furniture and decors, taking over the home decoration store run by his wife, Marie Bovy. He shook free of Art Nouveau aesthetics and the return to craftsmanship advocated by the Arts and Crafts movement to design furniture for the masses with a rational aesthetic, stripped of all superfluous ornament, which heralded the modern home. This richly illustrated book is the fruit of fifteen years of research by the owners of the Chateau of La Cheyrelle, remodelled by Gustave Serrurier. It traces the life of the architect-designer and looks at all the facets of his oeuvre from his avant-garde thinking to his main furniture and architectural designs. This enormous volume provides the first exhaustive catalog of the furniture and interior accessories of Domenico Ico Parisi (1916-86). A key protagonist of postwar Italian design alongside his friend Gio Ponti, Parisi defined himself as a renaissance artist interested in all forms of expression, and traversed the realms of architecture, industrial design, painting and photography. Parisi's furniture (realized primarily in wood and metal) and his interior designs are surveyed in their entirety, from his early collaborations with Cantu artisans in the 1940s through to his industrial production in the 1960s. Images of each item--often both archival and contemporary photographs--are accompanied by a short text explicating its history and production run. Also included is an extensive illustrated chronology of Parisi's career.

The first monograph dedicated to Rene Prou, a central figure of Art Deco Contains around 400 documents and photographs Rene Prou (1889-1947), an ensemblier and decorator, was - alongside Ruhlmann, Leleu, Dunand, Subes and Brandt - a central figure of the Art Deco movement. Trained at Gouffe, in Paris, in the 1910s, Prou took part in most of the Salons d'Automne and the Salons des artistes decorateurs before commanding attention at the Exposition international des arts decoratifs of 1925. Firmly established by major public and private commissions, his talent as an ensemblier was expressed as much in the decoration of ocean liners - Cuba (1923), Lafayette (1928), Paris (1929) - as in the fitting out of the sleeper cars of the Orient Express; the Palace of Nations in Geneva, where he worked alongside Jose-Maria Sert, with whom he also collaborated at the Waldorf Astoria in New York; and the furnishing of the Mitsubishi department stores in Tokyo. His style, defined by the curve of his metal leg blended with a joyous ornamentation, rejuvenated and lightened the full and massive forms of Art Deco while preserving harmony, comfort and a certain idea of simple luxury. Director of the Ecole de l'Union centrale des arts decoratifs, in Paris, in 1946, his influence marked many postwar talents, including Jean Royere. Text in English and French.
