‎[Film scripts] Dashiell Hammett (novel, screenwriter)‎

‎Screenplay for The Thin Man Sequel After the Thin Man Original screenplay Hammett's copy with holograph correction‎

‎Beverly Hills CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM 1935. Dashiell Hammett's original submitted Treatment script for the first sequel to "The Thin Man" here referred to only as "Thin Man Sequel" and ultimately titled "After the Thin Man." With a single manuscript correction by Hammett and letter of provenance from Hammett's daughter Josephine Hammett Marshall regarding the discovery of the treatment in the family's estate.

The first "Thin Man" film released in 1934 and based on Hammett's novel was a smash hit and is today a key film in the American screwball comedy cycle. Five sequels were made between 1936 and 1947 all starring the original acting team of William Powell and Myrna Loy and this previously unknown attempt at a sequel by Hammett was clearly commissioned by MGM but never produced making this script an entire unpublished Hammett work. The story is a completely original one never reworked for the other films very much written in Hammett's trademark style and reading a bit more like a story treatment i.e. a novel than a final screenplay which is likely as far as the story got on the road to production.

The piece is dated Sept. 17 1935 at the lower right corner of the front panel along with Hammett's name and Hammett's name is noted in pencil next to the title label though not in Hammett's hand. There is only one single-word correction to the entire text at page 83 in Hammett's hand where the word "compact" is replaced with "cigarette case."

Accompanying the screenplay is a typed letter signed from Hammett's daughter who edited a recently published collection of Hammett's letters on her personal stationery stating that the screenplay was discovered by Hammett's wife in 1980 and that it had been a part of the family's estate until that time. Probably one of only 2-3 copies that could have been produced and very possibly the only copy extant. To our knowledge no other copy of this story in any form has ever been recorded at auction or sold on the market.

Light blue titled wrappers with the white MGM studio label present manuscript pencil notation of Hammett's name secretarial rubber-stamped COMPLETE dated September 17 1935 with a single credit for Hammett. 115 leaves mimeograph duplication. Pages and wrapper Very Good plus bound with two gold brads. In a custom clamshell box.

Full pagination available upon request. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] unknown‎

‎N.p.: N.p. 1974. Draft script for the 1975 film.

In Manhattan a Jewish man who is a Holocaust survivor is arrested by Israeli agents for war crimes. The trial reveals him to be innocent but also leads to the decline of his mental well being in the courtroom. Maximilian Schell was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

The film version was initially disowned by the playwright likely due to the negative reception and early closure of the play due to public misunderstanding of its meaning. ‎Krasna, Norman (1909-1984). American screenwriter, playwright, producer and film director.‎

‎WONDERFUL TYPED LETTER SIGNED by the American playwright and film director NORMAN KRASNA to Jean Dalrymple regarding an unidentified play he is writing.‎

‎
Switzerland July 5th 1976. 1976. Fine. - Over 275 words typed on his personal 11-1/2 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide stationery with his Swiss address centered at the top. Norman Krasna writes to Jean Dalrymple about his latest play "Hold the presses." he says having rethought the ending. "I had a long searching session with the muse and also a critique from a friend and the three of us have come to the conclusion that the ending is not right." Feeling that his original ending seemed to imply that the girl settled for marriage "as she hasn't got the ability to be a star". "People don't go to the theatre to accept resignation. I prefer the girl on her way to be a star and have the marriage too." Signed "Norman". An apparent phone number is penned at top left of the letter and another spelled out in French at top right. The letter is further briefly annotated on the verso. The top edge of the page is slightly creased and the letter is folded for mailing. Near fine.

The American screenwriter playwirth producer and film director Norman Krasna 1909-1984 was known for his screwball comedies based on a case of mistaken identity. He wrote several successful Broadway plays including "Dear Ruth" and "John Loves Mary" and directed 3 films "The Ambassador's Daughter" "The Big Hangover" and "Princess O'Rourke" all of which he also wrote and was nominated 4 times for screenwriting Academy Awards winning once for "Princess O'Rourke".

The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea.
