Ranald MacDougall director; Jack Kerouac novel; Robert Thom screenwriter; Leslie Caron George Peppard Janice Rule starring
La Nostra Vita Comincia di Notte The Subterraneans Original Italian poster for the 1960 film
Beverly Hills CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM 1960. Vintage Italian Locandina poster for the 1960 US film.

From one perspective a fairly one-dimensional representation-perhaps even a caricature-of Beat culture but culturally fascinating in that it was made at the height of the Beat era with A-list talent by a top studio and until Walter Salles' 2012 adaptation of "On the Road" was the only feature-length film ever made from a Kerouac novel. Kerouac was paid $15000 by MGM for the rights to the book and bought his first home with the proceeds on Long Island.

A film that rarely screened today and has never been available on any kind of home viewing format. While its perspective on the actual Beat scene may be skewed or wildly misinterpreted it is nonetheless important as an interpretation of Kerouac's world from the outside looking in.

Shot on location in San Francisco California.

13 x 27 inches folded. Near Fine with light wrinkling. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] unknown books

Viva Zapata Original photograph from the 1952 film
Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox 1952. Vintage studio still photograph from the 1952 film. Snipe printed on the verso.

The culmination of screenwriter Steinbeck's long-standing fascination with Zapata it was said that Steinbeck had begun work on such a screenplay as early as 1948. The subject was a touchy one as the MPAA's Production Code Administration had been discouraging studios from working on such a film and there were prolonged negotiations with the Mexican government about approval over the film's release that culminated in a second cut of the film especially for Mexican distribution. Kazan and Steinbeck both ex-communists are said to have used this film to metaphorically express how they felt communism in the Soviet Union had gone off the rails.

The film won Anthony Quinn an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and it was nominated for four others. It also won Best Actor at Cannes and was nominated for the Grand Prize.

Set in early twentieth century Mexico shot at the Twentieth Century-Fox back lot with location shooting along the Rio Grande and across the American Southwest.

8 x 10 inches.
