‎Né en Algérie en 1938, de parents pieds-noirs établis depuis plusieurs générations, Pierre Claverie quitte son pays natal à l'âge de dix-neuf ans pour entreprendre des études universitaires en France. Dix ans plus tard, après être devenu religieux dominicain, il rentre en Algérie, se lance avec enthousiasme dans la découverte de la société algérienne et devient progressivement cet "homme des deux rives", capable de goûter et de faire aimer la saveur des différences. Nommé évêque d'Oran en 1981, Pierre Claverie s'engage à fond dans le combat pour une Algérie fraternelle et ouverte lorsque, à partir de 1990, celle-ci est confrontée à la violence. Il est assassiné le 1er août 1996, comme le furent beaucoup d'autres Algériens, connus ou anonymes, ainsi que plus d'une vingtaine de religieuses et religieux. A partir de 1957, quand Pierre Claverie part pour la France, les quatre membres de la famille (le père, la mère, Pierre et sa soeur Anne-Marie) s'écrivent : une lettre par semaine et cela pendant quarante ans ! Le premier volume de la correspondance (1967-1969), intitulé "Il est tout de même permis d'être heureux", exprimait l'optimisme fondamental de Pierre Claverie et de sa famille. Durant les années que couvre le deuxième volume (1969-1975), Pierre fait l'expérience des complexités et tiraillements de la vie. Il parle de "Cette contradiction continuellement vécue" - titre donné à ce volume -, de cette tension qu'il vit, douloureusement et avec profit à la fois, entre son désir d'une vie intérieure en retrait du monde et les exigences d'une vie active, de plus en plus tournée vers l'extérieur : enseignant, conseiller de l'évêque de Constantine, Mgr Scotto, directeur des Glycines, centre d'études diocésain à Alger... Nous avons là un document exceptionnel et rare, non pas seulement à cause de la personnalité d'un des protagonistes, du lieu où il vivait et où il s'est impliqué comme religieux puis comme évêque, mais aussi par l'originalité et par les qualités littéraires de cette correspondance familiale. All three volumes have an owner's name stamp at the head of the title page; in both Volumes I and II the top of the title page has been trimmed to remove a prior owner's signature. Volumes I and II are titled on the spine: "Clayton Agt. Bollingbroke". Following the publication of the final volume of this work which was considered by some to contain heretical attacks on the Trinity Clayton was censured by the church.
