Bibl. Dan. I,128. - Thesaurus II,479. - Birkelund, 42.

Folio. (27 x 19 cm.). Senere velbevaret hellæderbind i flammet kalv fra omkring 1850. Ryg med svagt ophøjede ægte bind, smalle forgyldte borter langs bindene. Forgyldt rygtitel: HUUSPOSTIL. (Se noten neden for). Nogle fejlpagineringer i begge Dele. 2 signaturer (læg) ombyttede (i 1. Folio. (27 x 19 cm.). Later well preserved full mottled calf binding from ca 1850. Slightly raised real bands to spine, slim gilt borders along the bands. Gilt title to spine. The copy is nearly complete, as its is only lacking the title-page for part 1 and the final blank. Part 1: 13 (of 14) unnumbered leaves + 214 numbered laeves. Part II: 234 numbered leaves + 13 unnumbered leaves. Some paginational errors in both parts. Two quires have been swapped (in part 1 and the index). With numerous half-page woodcuts in the text depicting the life of Jesus. Until recently, the artist had remained unidentified (please see note below for clarification). Printed on thick, heavy paper. Signs of use, mostly to the first leaves of part 1. Ca 20 leaves re-margined, and ca 15 leaves re-inforced at outer margin. Three leaves repaired with loss of text. A few leaves restores at edges with marginal loss of lettering. All edges of colophon repaired, but no loss of text. A few leaves with light damp staining and brownspotting. One quire of the index loose. All in all an unusually well preserved copy of this extremely rare monument of Danish theology.‎

Del I, blad 71b. - Thesaurus I, 100. - Bibl. Danica I:499. - Birkelund, 31. The exceedingly scarce first edition of the first Danish edition of Hemmingsen’s Postil. Only two complete copies are known on private hands, one that was owned by Thore Virgin up until 1947, and another copy that appeared in France some years back and which is now in a Danish private collection. According to Lauritz Nielsen, merely four complete copies are registered in libraries world-wide (Royal Library in Danmerk, Linköping’s Stifts- og Landbibliotek, Karen Brahe in Odense, and Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel). The copy in the University Library in Denmark is defective, as are the three other copies that The Royal Library owns, all very incomplete. Hemmingsen’s Postille first appeared in Latin in 1561, followed by another 15 Latin editions, all in 8vo. All 16 editions are considered exceedingly rare. Carl S. Petersen calls Niels Hammingsen ”the greatest theological scientist that has ever lived in our country” (i.e. Denmark). As a pupil of Melanchthon, he is rightfully considered the most significant thinker during the Danish/Norwegian Reformation. His Postil does not cosntitute actual sermons, but ”dispositions for such, prepared with the goal of forcing the priest into serious contemplation of the holy Text.” (Own translation from Danish). By his contemporaries, Hemmingsen was known as “The common teacher of Denmark”. THE ILLUSTRATIONS: A Danish bibliophile and expert on 16th century printings (Jørgen Jark) has contributed to solve the question of the origin of the monumental illustrations. He states that according to Nagler in “Die Monogramisten”, the signature CE (in Thesaurus and Birkelund erroneously read as CF) most likely refers to the artist Master Endele. Endele was part of the Wittenberg School, and this series of illustrations had previously been used in a German edition of Luther’s Postil. A few of the illustrations bear the years 1561 and 1562. After having been lent to Denmark, they must have been returned, as they appear in no other Danish printing. The woodcutter has marked himself with a woodcutter’s knife and a sign resembling “4”, which was a commonly used guild mark of the period. A few of the illustrations belong to a completely different series, e.g. Part 1, f. 71b. They are attributed to Hans Brosamer" his enire series was used by Mats Vingaard in his Luther’s Postil from 1577. Lauritz Nielsen: 886. - Thesaurus I, 100. - Bibl. Danica I:499. - Birkelund, 31.‎

‎The exceedingly rare first edition of the work in which we find the first depiction of the Jelling Stone, also known as ""Denmark's birth certificate"", and its famous rune inscription for the first time in print. The work is of exceptional importance to Danish history and specifically important to our current knowledge of the Jelling Stone and where it was placed. The Jelling stone is a massive carved runestone from the 10th century, found at the town of Jelling in Denmark. It was raised by King Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth in memory of his parents, celebrating his conquest of Denmark and Norway, and his conversion of the Danes to Christianity. The runic inscriptions on these stones are considered the best known in Denmark and are of the utmost importance to the history of the country. The seminal Jelling Stone is often called ""Denmark's birth certificate"", because Denmark is named in the inscription and also because the stone is a clear material proof of the change in religion - from paganism to Christianity. Furthermore, it is strongly identified with the creation of Denmark as a nation state. The inscription translates thus: ""King Harald ordered these kumbls made in memory of Gorm, his father, and in memory of Thyra, his mother"" that Harald who won for himself all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian"".

- [FIRST COMPLETE EDITION OF THE ETHIOPIC PSALTER]‎

‎Frankfurt am Main, Zunner, 1701. 4to. In contemporary full mottled calf with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. A few scratches to boards and spine-ends slightly chipped. Leather on spine cracked. “ex dono Prof. B. Thorlacii” in contemporary hand to front free end-paper - likely referring to the Danish classical scholar and theologian Børge Thorlacius (1775–1829), professor at the University of Copenhagen and Secretary of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences.Title page in red and black with the first three lines in Ethiopic. Last 10 ff. with hole in outer margin, not touching text, otherwise internally a nice and clean copy. (8), 427, (1) pp.‎

‎First complete edition of the much celebrated Ethiopic Psalter edited by the great orientalist Hiob Ludolf, the founder of European Ethiopic (Geez) studies. This is the first complete edition of the Book of Psalms printed in Ethiopic characters, accompanied by a Latin translation and extensive philological notes – it is widely regarded as being a high point in Ethiopian studies. The work is one of the earliest examples of a critical edition of a Biblical text in Ethiopic and remains a cornerstone in the history of Ethiopic printing and European biblical philology. “The first printed Ethiopic text (not by accident the psalter, the most commonly read Christian Ethiopic book) dates from 1513, with a second four-language edition in 1518, both edited by Potken in Rome (1513) and Cologne (1518). A few Ethiopic texts were also printed in the seventeenth century, but it was only with Hiob Ludolf (1624–1704) that text editing was carried out in such a way that it can be methodologically evaluated. Ludolf’s edition of the psalter [The present] still stands out as an advanced example of method in some respects: Ludolf based his edition on three manuscripts and the two available prints, and was well aware of questions of normalisation and standardisation. He did not hesitate to reintegrate ex nihilo missing verses or hemistichs when they were attested by the Greek and Hebrew text and missing in the Ethiopic version, where he explained their absence as due to the inaccuracy of the copyist, so that, ultimately, he fundamentally based his edition on his own iudicium (Ludolf 1701, 2v–3v). Nonetheless, this edition of the psalter, also furnished with a commentary, is still of great importance because of the critical comparison with the Greek and Hebrew texts on which it is based. Ludolf’s works represent the high point in Ethiopian studies within the context of oriental studies in the modern age”. (Roelli, Handbook of Stemmatology) Hiob Ludolf Hiob Ludolf (1624–1704), also known as Job Leutholf, was a German orientalist, born at Erfurt often referred to as ""the most illustrious name in Ethiopic scholarship"". While searching in Rome for some documents at the request of the Swedish Court, he became friends with Abba Gorgoryos, a monk from the Ethiopian province of Amhara and acquired from him an intimate knowledge of the Ethiopian language of Amhara. In 1690 he was appointed president of the Collegium Imperiale Historicum. Darlow & Moule 3571.Brunet IV 921.‎

‎"MANTON, THOMAS.‎

‎A Practical Commentary, or an Exposition with notes on the Epistle of James. Delivered in sundry weekly lectures at Stoke-Newington in Middlesex, neer London - [“ONE OF THE BEST EXPOSITIONS EVER WRITTEN ON JAMES""]‎

‎London, Printed by J. Macock for Luke Favvne, 1651. 4to. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands. Wear to extremities. Pp. 541-606 with worm-tract in inner margin, not affecting text. Last leaves with marginal miscolouring, but generally a good copy. (18), 624 pp.‎

‎First edition of Manton’s commentary on James which not only is regarded as being his finest work but also as being “one of the best expositions ever written on James”. (Beeke, Meet the Puritans). Thomas Manton, born on March 31, 1620, in Lydeard St. Lawrence. Thomas received his early education at the free school in Tiverton, Devon. At the age of sixteen, he enrolled at Wadham College, Oxford, where he pursued his studies. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1639, followed by a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1654, and finally, a Doctorate of Divinity degree in 1660, all from Oxford University. Ordained to the diaconate at the age of twenty in 1640 by Joseph Hall, Manton served as a lecturer at the parish church of Sowton near Exeter, Devonshire, for three years. Manton quickly rose to prominence as a leading Presbyterian figure in London, leveraging his influence to advocate for the establishment of Presbyterian church governance and to promote public peace during turbulent periods. He played a significant role in the Westminster Assembly, where he was appointed one of three clerks, and delivered numerous sermons before Parliament during the Commonwealth era. “Manton was remembered at his funeral as “the king of preachers.” Bates said that he never heard him deliver a poor sermon and commended his ability to “represent the inseparable connection between Christian duties and privileges.” Archbishop James Ussher described Manton as “a voluminous preacher” and “one of the best in England.” That is certainly evident from Manton’s many writings, most of which are sermons.” (Beeke, Meet the Puritans).‎

‎First edition of Melanchthon's last work (published just three months before his death), in which he consolidated a lifetime of learning into the remarkable Body of Christian Doctrine (often referred to as Corpus Doctrinae Philippicum). Melanchthon had conceived the notion of assembling his most important theological writings, along with the ecumenical creeds, into one single book. The writings served as the authoritative declaration and instruction within that particular Christian group or denomination. In the mid-16th century Lutheranism crafted these compilations for the diverse duchies and principalities of the Holy Roman Empire. These anthologies laid the groundwork for the Book of Concord, recognized historically by Lutherans as their ultimate Body of Doctrine."" The 16th Century Reformation and the contemporary face of Christianity owe much to Philipp Melanchthon. Endowed with profound knowledge of the Greek language, Melanchthon played a crucial role in assisting Martin Luther in translating the Bible. Adams M1105BLSTC German p.610‎

‎Later edition of Owen’s highly influential work on Psalm 130 also known as the ""De Profundis"" or ""Out of the Depths"". This work reflects Owen's commitment to both the rigorous study of Scripture and the practical application of biblical truths to the lives of believers. John Owen (1616-1683) was a prominent English theologian and minister in the Puritan tradition during the 17th century. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest theological minds in the Reformed tradition. Owen was born in Stadhampton, Oxfordshire, England, and he attended Queen's College, Oxford, where he studied classics and theology. Owen's theological writings covered a wide range of topics, including theology proper, soteriology, ecclesiology, and pneumatology. He was a staunch defender of Calvinism and Reformed theology, and he engaged in theological debates with various religious factions of his time, including Arminians and Socinians, two different branches of Pietism.‎

‎Third expanded edition of Pearson’s highly influential ‘Exposition of the Creed. First published in 1659 it remained on the the most influential works on the Apostles’ Creed in the Anglican Church throughout the 17th century. Pearson dedicated his work to his parishioners of St. Clement's, Eastcheap, where he had previously preached the essence of the work several years earlier. Regarding the Christian cross, he explained in his commentary on the Apostles' Creed that the Greek term stauros initially meant ""a straight standing Stake, Pale, or Palisador,"" but when additional transverse or prominent parts were added to form a perfect Cross, it still retained its original name. He asserted that ""The Form then of the Cross on which our Saviour suffered was not a simple, but a compounded, Figure, according to the Custom of the Romans, by whose Procurator he was condemned to die. In which there was not only a straight and erected piece of Wood fixed in the Earth, but also a transverse Beam fastened unto that towards the top thereof.""‎
