‎Curé, Amédée Alexandre, franz. kath. Priester u. Schriftsteller (1838-1905)‎

‎Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift.‎

A collection of 45 poems nearly all of which are extremely positive and upbeat "Let's Have a Never-Ending Love Contest" "When You Get Delighted" and "Thank God for Civilization" are a few examples. Outside of anthologies perhaps the only volume of poetry ever published with the poems arranged in alphabetical order.

Erickson would take a different turn upon his release forming a hard rock band called Roky Erickson and the Aliens writing almost exclusively about Satanism and riffing on classic horror films. Toward the end of the 1970s he again went into a long period of mental decline and has only recently begun to perform again. A rare title nearly impossible to find with a contemporary signature.

A second collection titled "Openers II" containing Erickson's song lyrics essays and interviews was published 23 years later in 1995.

Very Good plus in moderately soiled white cloth-covered boards a gilt peace/cross symbol design on the front board gilt spine titles and no dust jacket as issued. ‎London Oxford Cambridge: Rivingtons 1873. Octavo pp. i-v vi-viii 1 2-279 280: printer's imprint 96-page publisher's catalogue dated "August 1881" inserted at rear original decorated green cloth front and spine panels stamped in gold gray coated endpapers all edges untrimmed. First edition. "Collection of sixty-three fictional pieces all with some moral to be discerned in them though it's not always clear. Some are very short indeed including a number of animal fables while others are fully developed short stories. 'Bad Air and Water' lays the downfall of twin girls despite the generous gifts of a fairy godmother to a negligent mother who let them read . sensation novels! Some present parables. Another ruefully meditates on the unhappy fate of the man who invented the 'glossometre' which records and classifies a person's statements 'Observations on the weather 100; on the crops 50; to his own praise 100; to his neighbor's blame 200; faults found with others which are also his own 199.'. Nobody will keep it and it is turned out of every home as well as a pulpit. The collection presents a study in a cluster of related literary styles that are largely out of favor today but which have been historically important and which have shaped the work of such authors as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Franz Kafka." - Robert Eldridge. ‎New York: various 1812. Ten sermons bound in contemporary half sheep and marbled boards rubbed gum label at spine base. Rubberstamp on blank front pastedown. Manuscript table of contents. Each sermon as follows:

1. A SERMON PREACHED IN NEW-YORK JULY 4TH 1793. BEING THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF AMERICA: AT THE REQUEST OF THE TAMMANY SOCIETY OR COLUMBIAN ORDER. BY.ONE OF THE MINISTERS OF THE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHES IN THE CITY OF NEW-YORK. New York: Greenleaf. 1793. 38 2 blanks pp. Very Good. On the final blank is Miller's written notes. The Tammany Society should "stand as guardians over those inestimable rights and privileges which have been so dearly purchased." Christianity teaches the equality of all. Slavery will "be forever banished from a nation" which regards everyone "as subject to the same great laws and amenable to the same awful tribunal in the end."
Evans 25823.
2. A DISCOURSE DELIVERED IN THE NEW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NEW-YORK: BEFORE THE GRAND LODGE OF THE STATE OF NEW-YORK AND THE BRETHREN OF THAT FRATERNITY ASSEMBLED IN GENERAL COMMUNICATION ON THE FESTIVAL OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST JUNE 24TH 1795. New York: Childs. 1795. 32pp. Light to moderate foxing Good. Verso of title page has Miller's notes laid in explaining another of his discourses should have been inserted. His Discourse says Masonic principles "are such as the blessed Redeemer perpetually dropped from his hallowed lips."
Evans 29081.
3. A SERMON DELIVERED FEBRUARY 5 1799; RECOMMENDED BY THE CLERGY OF THE CITY OF NEW-YORK TO BE OBSERVED AS A DAY OF THANKSGIVING HUMILIATION AND PRAYER ON ACCOUNT OF THE REMOVAL OF A MALIGNANT AND MORTAL DISEASE WHICH HAD PREVAILED IN THE CITY SOME TIME BEFORE. New York: Forman. 1799. 36pp scattered foxing. Good. With a chart showing 2082 deaths listed by religions including eleven Jews; also listing forty-three Negroes.
Evans 35821. Not in Austin.
4. A SERMON DELIVERED MAY 9 1798 RECOMMENDED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO BE OBSERVED AS A DAY OF GENERAL HUMILIATION FASTING AND PRAYER. New-York: Swords. 1798. 46 2 blanks pp. Very Good. The "events in Europe" are characterized by atheism profaneness a "selfish and mercenary spirit." Miller warns against the "curse" of "European connections."
Evans 34109.
5. New York: Swords. 1800. 39 1 blank pp with the half title. Light toning Very Good. Evidently Miller's sermon was similar to one delivered by Dr. Erskine of Edinburgh because an 'Advertisement' on the verso of the title page denies that "such coincidence" was the result of plagiarism.
Evans 37964. Stillwell 171a.
6. A SERMON DELIVERED BEFORE THE NEW-YORK MISSIONARY SOCIETY. APRIL 6TH 1802. ‎CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN REV. NEHEMIAH ADAMS AND REV. J.H. FAIRCHILD WITH NOTES AND COMMENTS BY A COMMITTEE OF THE PAYSON CHURCH‎

‎Boston: Dutton and Wentworth Printers 1846. Original printed salmon wrappers stitched 48pp. Occasional light spotting Very Good.

"The letters concern Rev. Adams' refusal to grant letters of recommendation from his church to the Payson church of which Rev. Fairchild was pastor because of accusations of immoral conduct against Fairchild" Cohen. The Payson church was thus deprived of "the fellowship of sister churches." Fairchild had allegedly seduced a young woman Rhoda Davidson of Edgecomb Maine while she was a domestic in his family. She had a child and nominated Fairchild as the father. Ecclesiastical trials ensued. Fairchild claimed that rival ministers one of whom was Reverend Adams had defamed him by calling him an habitual libertine and adulterer. Adams as Fairchild puts it "publicly said that there was more guilt resting on my head than on the head of any man who walks the streets of Boston or words to that effect."
The Payson Church Committee examines the relevant documents and concludes "We clearly saw that no guilt had been proved against him and therefore felt bound to regard him as innocent wondering how any human creature could have a heart to add another grain to his load of suffering or inflict one fresh wound on his wife and children. We deem him one of the most injured and persecuted clergymen which the history of this country can furnish."
Cohen 13687. AI 46-54 5. Dutton and Wentworth, Printers unknown books‎

‎Cavo Padre Andres and Carlos Maria de Bustamante.‎

‎Los Tres Siglos de Mexico durante el Gobierno Espanol hasta la Entrada del Ejercito Trigarante .‎

‎Mexico: Abadiano y Valdes 1836 - 38. First edition. 4 vols. 4to viii 281; 158; viii 419; viii 281 pp. Vols. 1-2 edited by Bustamante from the MS: Historia civil y politica de Mexico; vols. 3-4 constitute the editor's supplement. The work is ofrten bound in two volumes but here we have it in four. Cavo was a Jesuit a native of Mexico and expelled from the country along with the others of his order in 1767. Although he made a great effort to return to Mexico later in his life dissociating himself from the Jesuits and travelling to Spain to do so but he did not succeed. The rest of his life was spent in Rome where he died in great poverty in 1803. Beristain de Souza has almost nothing to say about him as his work was not discovered until the 1830's when Bustamante ran across the manuscript in a private episcopal library and theeafter took charge of having it published with his additions. The first two books are Cavo's up to the expulsion and despite the title is a history of viceregal Mexico City.Wikipedia says: "The work is not a history in the usual sense. It is better described as the annals of Mexico City with particular emphasis on the development of political ideas. The book also contains details of colonial life that are not available in any other source. Cavo shows signs of Mexican not Spanish colonial nationality and for this reason is considered a forerunner of Mexican independence. Porrua Diccionario states that his was the first history of Viceregal Mexico. The last two volumes are by Bustamante himself an important Mexican historian after independence associated with the liberal party and they are a continuation up to 1821 being of a broader scope and containing some important documents also not published before. Bound in contemporary calf leather over speckled boards titles and fillets in gilt on spines. Very good set.

Abadiano y Valdes hardcover books‎

‎SARATOGA SPRING WATERS . . . THESE WATERS ARE BOTTLED FRESH FROM EACH OF THE SPRINGS IN SO CAREFUL AND SECURE A MANNER THAT THEY PRESERVE ALL THEIR MEDICINAL VALUE FOR YEARS" - Advertising circular for bottle spring water sent by the inventor of time zones to the most important professor at Hamilton College‎

‎Saratoga Springs to Clinton New York 1868. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This two-page handbill measures 6" x 9.75" and is illustrated with an image of the Congress and Columbian Springs in Saratoga Springs New York. An addendum identifying the "Discounts for 1869" is attached to the reverse. The handbill is enclosed in its original envelope sent by the Reverend Charles F. Dowd from Saratoga Springs to Professor Edward North of Hamilton College in Clinton New York. The envelope is franked with a black two-cent Jackson stamp Scott #73 that has been canceled with a fancy "P" carved cork handstamp. Both the handbill and envelope are in nice shape. The alleged benefits of Saratoga Springs naturally-carbonated mineral water can be traced by to the Mohawk and Iroquois tribes that are said to have drank and bathed in the waters for its supposed healing and curative powers.
Early settlers were convinced and over time incredible claims about their power exploded in early America. They were said to cure kidney and liver disease rheumatism diabetes scrofula cancer malaria and "weakness of women" in addition to numerous other conditions and diseases. By the mid-1850s Saratoga was the pre-eminent vacation destination for the uber-wealthy including the Vanderbilts Whitneys J.P. Morgan Diamond Jim Brady and Lillian Russell. Soon thereafter resort proprietors expanded their operations to include bottling their waters for shipment especially within New York state.

This circular was produced in the early days of Saratoga water shipping by the suppliers Hotchkiss Sons who promise to deliver bottled water from the Empire Congress and Columbian Springs "safely and securely packed in boxes suitable for shipment to any part of the world."

Reverend Dowd and his wife were co-principals of Temple Grove Ladies Seminary now Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. Dowd however is most famous for inventing the system of U.S. time zones that was eventually adopted world-wide to improve railroad scheduling.

Professor North served as the Professor of Greek and ancient languages at Hamilton College for over 58 years.
