It has also played an important role in the popularization of the revised Rite of Anointing and Pastoral Care of the Sick. There is an overview of scriptural and theological principles underlying a theology of healing--creation fall redemption the church as Body of Christ. Then follows a detailed account of the history of the sacrament of anointing: its origins in apostolic times based on the traditional Catholic interpretation of James V and bolstered by recently discovered archaeological evidence; its development during the patristic era especially the universally accepted practice of blessing oil by bishop or priest for use by the faithful within their households; its adaptation in the Carolingian period to a clericalized society so that at least in the West and under normal circumstances only bishops could bless the oil and priests alone could anoint the sick; its further development during the scholastic era into a sacrament especially though never exclusively for the dying; its defense against attacks of the reformers by the Council of Trent and the insights provided by the minutes of conciliar discussions into the Tridentine decrees on the purpose subject and minister of the sacrament; and its current revival as a sacrament for the sick particularly through the intervention of Vatican II and its aftermath. "Walmesley was a respected astronomer and onetime Catholic Bishop of York but he seems to have maintained the Newtonian tradition of eschatological speculation. Writing under the pseudonym �Signor Pastorini � around 1790 he published an often-reprinted �General History of the Christian Church � based on the Book of Revelation. Among other points he suggests that the locusts of Revelation Chapter 9 represent the Protestant sects and that the period during which they would torment the world would last just 300 years. " From a review by John Reilly of "Irish Recollections" by C. E. Tonna. This interpretation was also known as the Rockite eschatology named in honour of a fictional Captain Rock identified with the populist Catholic uprising in Ireland against the Protestant land owners and overlords. The prophetic interpretations of St. John's writings by Walmesley became known as the Pastorini Prophecies and enjoyed wide circulation with the common people both in Ireland and elsewhere. There are no approbations present. No date is shown for this the fifth American edition by Sadlier. Typical of Sadlier editions it still has a nice presentation that belies the poor quality of paper used. The text pages are browned with some brittleness present in the first signature and more so in the gutter margins. The front hinge shows some cracking at the tail whilst the binding itself is still quite strong and sturdy. The spine is faded with the corners and spine crown/heel show mild shelf wear The library mentioned is a church library with the only marking being a stamp on each of the front end papers and no external markings.
