As a court preacher he preached at Versailles nine various times during the reign of Louis XIV he managed to steer clear of offending his audience/congregation while at the same allowing no compromise of the great and eternal truths. Many of his sermons were used in catechism text books. The translation from the original French is by a brother Jesuit Reverend A. Carroll. The externals show wear with moderate scuffing and soiling. The title page is illustrated with a gryphon griffin standing on its hind legs; the winged lion emblematic of St. Mark. This same symbol was adapted by Eric Gill but stood erect on all fours to be used as a cover illustration for Fr. Ronald Knox's translation of this gospel as published in pamphlet form. The text block edges are dyed red. Minor wear to the cover corners and edges with a wee bit of edge folding to the top of the fore edge margin of the first 5 or 6 pages.
