‎MAHMUD EROL KILIÇ.‎

‎Ibnü'l-Arabî.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Edition in Turkish. 268 p. Ibn al-Arabi. Ibnü'l-Arabî. Muhyiddin Ibn al-Arabi, who lived in the 12th-13th centuries, was not only a ground breaking sufi master, but also the author of an extensive corpus which carry projections of a large ontological construction by his epistemological and ontological theories. Ibn al-Arabi, who has a unique place by the ontological construction he realized not only in the history of Sufism but also in the history of Islamic thought, has a mentality that can guide modern people in their adventure of making sense of the painful existence. This monographic work which focuses on the life and thoughts of Ibn al-Arabi, one of the turning points of Islamic intellectual history, and tries to present to its reader the products of his life journey starting in Andalusia, then continuing in Hijaz and Anatolia and ending in Damascus through a comprehensible language. This book, which is formed by the texts penned by prof. Mahmud Erol Kiliç, an expert in the field, preludes to the ideas that will aid the modernof himself and his existence.‎

‎ALI IHSAN YITIK.‎

‎Dogu dinleri.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Edition in Turkish. 315 p. Dogu dinleri. Eastern religions. The "Eastern religions" concept usually refers to the non-Abrahamic religious traditions of Indian and Chinese origin. If we leave aside far-fetched arguments, such as the idea that the term "Abraham" is a distorted variation of the words brahmin or berâhime, that the expression "flesh-soul" refers to the bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment, or similarly that Hezekiel also signifi es Buddha as "of Kapila", again in relation to his birth place Kapilavastu, there is no reference to these faiths in the Qur'an. Possibly as a consequence of this situation, Turkish sources have remained limited to the translations of the Works written in various Western languages. Whereas, many mystical views and practices specific to Indian and Chinese religions are among the most signifi cant resources not only for Sufi practices, but also today's new religious movements. It has been recognized that some trends which emerged and spread in the West, particularly aft er 1950, have started to find supporters in Türkiye in recent years. Most of the time these trends claim that they are not associated with any religious faith or cult, and that they only rely on scientific research and contemporary methods; however, there is a need to learn about the religious faiths to which these movements belong, so that their basic teachings and practices can be understood and interpreted correctly.‎

‎BURHANETTIN TATAR.‎

‎Din, ilim ve sanatta hermenötik.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Edition in Turkish. 205 p. Din, ilim ve sanatta hermenötik. Hermeneutics in religion, science and art. The most distinctive quality of hermeneutic thinking which distinguishes it other various schools of thought, such as the conceptual analysis of an object, linguistic depiction of an historical phenomenon, or attempt to validate a religious fate in terms of Philosophy-Kalam, is the thought that accepts existence as a dual process that always creates and to solve the historical crisis or a particular problem. To the author, no way of thinking can have an authentic perspective unless it adequately addresses the existential problem or crisis. Otherwise, ideologies which supersede reality, cause existence to surrender to thought, and hence detach us from reality, are revered as thought. The hermeneutic endeavor, in this aspect, is an effort to understand progress as a process in which each authentic thinking experience tries to overcome the existential crisis, drawing attention to the deep damage inflicted on societies by revering some ways of thinking or ideologies.‎

‎MEHMET ÖZDEMIR.‎

‎Endülüs.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 12 cm). Edition in Turkish. 415 p. Endülüs. Andalusia. Today, as in the past, the name Andalusia arouses interest in the Islamic world. However, this interest stems more from sentiment than it from knowledge about Andalusia. In anyone of the muslim countries, including Türkiye, one can witness that whenever a person hears the name Andalusia, they are suddenly overcome by both sadness and admiration. For the Muslim consciousness, the culture and civilization of the Andalusians are remembered with admiration, while the complete loss of this nation is remembered with grief. Since 1492, Andalusia has been a "paradise lost" for Muslims. For every Muslim land which faces foreign occupation, Muslims feel the fear of Andalusation. Accordingly, there is no emotional indifference towards Andalusia. Yet, it is difficult to say that there have been sufficient efforts to study, analyze and understand the history of Andalusia. In other words, though there has been sufficient mourning for Andalusia, there have not been enough effrts to rediscover it. For the Islamic world, making a persistent and effective move to compete with other civilizations is only possible if Muslims form a healthy connection with their past. This book, concentrating on the history of Andalusia, is written to pave the way for such efforts.‎

‎ÖMER FARUK AKÜN.‎

‎Divan edebiyati.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 12 cm). Edition in Turkish. 184 p. Divan edebiyati. Diwan literature. Divan literature is an important branch of Turkish literature developing within Islamic civilization. In this work, the living master of the classical Turkish literature, Ömer Faruk Akün examines this unique form of literature which continued without interruption for six centuries from the end of the Anatolian Seljuks to the Ottomans. The writer discusses the conditions that paved the way for divan literature and its formation process, the verse forms that founded divan poetry, the literary discipline that raised divan poets, and the context and aesthetics in divan poetry that defined the tradition. An example of Akün's interpretation of the verse forms of divan literature may be gleaned from the following quotation: "This literature is composed of odes by the court poets praising emperors, lyrics in each of which an unchanging and ideal beauty is described and the pains of a platonic love are singed gently, demure terci'-bend and terkib-bends, rubâîs that squeeze emotions and thoughts most densely into a small volume, and mathnavis that tell of love aff airs, the heroes and heroins of which are always the same.".‎

[= Bosporus adventure: Istanbul (Constantinople) Woman's College, 1871-1924]. Translated by Seyman Akin. A Bosporus Adventure is a history of the Woman's College at Constantinople by a former president. Mary Mills Patrick was born 10 March 1850 in Canterbury, New Hampshire to John & Harriet (White) Patrick. She graduated from the Lyons Collegiate Institute in Lyons, Iowa, in 1869. In 1871, by appointment of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, she became a teacher in a mission school in Erzurum. In her four years there Patrick learned ancient and modern Armenian. In 1875 she was transferred to the American High School for Girls in Üsküdar, and she became principal of the school in 1889. During her summers she lived in Greek villages. She thus was able to add Greek and Turkish to her repertoire of languages. After a study furlough in the United States she received a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1890. In that year, after much planning and the securing of a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the American High School became the American College for Girls at Constantinople, later known as Constantinople Woman's College. Patrick served as president of the college from its opening. Her summer studies at the Universities of Heidelberg, Zürich, Berlin, Leipzig, Paris, and Oxford resulted in a Ph.D. from the University of Bern, Switzerland, in 1897. Her dissertation was published in 1899 as Sextus Empiricus and Greek Scepticism. When the college was destroyed by fire in 1905, a new site was acquired in Arnavutköyü on the European side of the Bosporus. A new charter in 1908 ended the college's ties to the mission board, and in 1914 the new campus was occupied. Patrick kept the school open through the Balkan Wars, the Turkish revolution, and World War I, and through those changes it evolved from a school primarily for minority Greek, Armenian, and Bulgarian Christian women into a leading centre of higher education for Turkish women. She remained president until her retirement in 1924, after which she moved back to the United States. The American College for Girls later affiliated with nearby Robert College for men. Patrick's books include Sappho and the Island of Lesbos (1912); The Greek Skeptics (1929); Under Five Sultans (1929), an autobiography; and A Bosporus Adventure (1934), a history of the college.‎

Text by Andelko Vlasic. "One of the aims of this book is to remind both the Croatian and Turkish public of the significance of the Ottoman heritage for the cultural wealth of Croatia, as well as Turkey and the balkans, because the fullness of ouor common heritage would be seriously lacking in scope if it was not for the Ottoman part. Readers of this book will, hopefully, be surprised byb the sheer number of Croatian towns and villages whose historical development included (unfortunately, mostly poorly researched) an Ottoman period, and whose topography includes numerous buildings, monuments and historical remains originating in the mentioned period.".‎

‎Very Good Arabic Original very aesthetic full leather bdg. with a flap. Traditional decorations and embossing. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script. 719 p. Only volume 1. Khadimî [Hadimî] was born in 1701 and died in 1762. He began his education life and maintained it in Konya and studied in Istanbul. Then he returned to Khadim. He lectured at the madrasah. He was mufti of Khadim and shayh of Nakshi order. His works number is not known by sources. He is well-known in Ottoman science world via lecturing sultan and talking Fatiha commentary and his work Macami al-hakayik and Sharh Tarikat al- Muhammadiya called Barika. The cause of why Ottoman authors interested in Macami hasn't been investigated until now. According to me it has got a strong logic and it has been written in basic principal. These qualifications attracted Ottoman authors. It is a philosophical principal and the relation of essence (jawhar) and attributes (araz). In that, KHadimî has got strong logical knowledge. He showed it in his mystical works and his written advices for pupils and his letters left as will. (Source: Wisdom Understanding Of Abu Saeed Muhammad Khadimi And His View To Philosophy, IRFAN GÖRKAS.). This work by Al-Khadimi is only first volume. ‎Krisdosçin siyreti [BOOK in TURKISH WITH ARMENIAN LETTERS].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original decorative black cloth bdg. 12mo. (17,5 x 11,5 cm). In Turkish with Armenian letters. 206 p. "Armenian letters used by Ottoman Armenians and Gregorian Kipchaks have differences in terms of spelling and writing style. Also in terms of word existence, borrowed words from the Slavic language in Gregorian Kipchak Turkish are more. Arabic and Persian words, on the other hand, are partly seen in some works. However, Armenian words are very limited. It is seen that a differentiating language according to the region and quality of the work is used in the works by Armenians under Ottoman rule. In such works, there are Arabic and Persian words along with the Anatolian accents. Writing Turkish texts with Armenian letters is come across in manuscripts after the 14th century and in pressed works after the 18th century. Armenian books started to be pressed in printing houses after the beginning of the 16th century. The first Turkish book with Armenian letters was pressed in Venice in 1876 by Sivasli Mikhitar, the founder of the Union of Mikhitarists. The number of the pressed books is quite a lot. Works written in Armenian Turkish and letters in Ottoman lands are generally categorized into five groups. These are the works of Armenian poet-singers (asug), written literary works, translations, newspapers, journals, and epitaphs. It is possible to classify this classification with a more general approach by also including Kipchak areas as such: literary works (it is possible to consider this as oral and written works), dictionaries, and works on language, translations, legal documents, historical works, and periodicals.". ‎SÜLEYMAN CHELEBI, (1351-1422).‎

‎The Mevlidi Sherif (Wisdom of the East Series). Translated by F. Lyman MacCallum.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Foolscap 8vo. (17,5 x 12,5 cm). In English. 41, [3] p., musical scores of Mawlid. The Mevlidi Sherif (Wisdom of the East Series). Translated by F. Lyman MacCallum. Süleyman Çelebi, also called Süleyman Of Bursa, one of the most famous early poets of Anatolia. Süleyman appears to have been the son of an Ottoman minister, Ahmed Pasa, who served in the court of Sultan Murad I. Süleyman became a leader of the Khalwatîyah dervish order and then imam (religious leader) to the court of the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I (1389-1402). After Bayezid's death, Süleyman took the position of imam in a mosque in Bursa. Süleyman's most famous and only surviving work is the great religious poem Mevlûd-i Nebi, or Mevlûd-i Peygamberi. The Mevlûd, as it is more commonly called, tells the story of the Prophet Mu?ammad's birth, life, and death; his miracles; and his journey to heaven. Written in simple 15th-century Ottoman Turkish style, it is a work inspired with religious fervour and is often recited at religious ceremonies, particularly funerals in present Turkey. It is chanted during the celebrations of the Prophet's birthday. (Britannica). "In he days of Tamerlane (at the end of the 14th century) Chelebi was one of the royal chaplains of Sultan Beyazid the Thunderbolt. When amerlane overthrew Beyazid, Süleyman found refuge as chief-priest of the Great Mosque at Bursa. Therehe composed the 'The birth-song of the Prophet' to confute a teaching that Muhammed was no greater than other prophets. The poem survives after 500 years and is much loved by the people of Turkey. It is recited at times of thanksgiving and sorrow and on many special occasions. An authority on Turkey said recently: "No one can know what Muhammed means to a Turk unless he is familiar this poem.". The Wisdom of the EEast Series has a definite object. It is planned, by means of the best Oriental literature-its wisdom, philosophy, poetry, and ideals- to bring together West and East in a spirit of mutual sympathy, goodwill, and understanding. From India, China, Japan, Persia, Arabia, Palestine, and Egypt these words of wisdom have been gathered.‎

‎Very Good Bulgarian Original blue cloth bdg. with embossing. Slightly stains on boards and toned on pages. Otherwise a very good copy. 12mo. (16,5 x 12 cm). In Bulgarian. 1230, [2] p. [HOLY BOOK IN BULGARIAN PRINTED IN TSARIGRAD (CONSTANTINOPLE)] Bibliia sirech sveshtenoto pisanie na Vetkhiia i Noviia zavet: Viarno i tochno prevedena ot pûrvoobraznoto. [.] In 1840 5,000 copies of the first complete translation of the New Testament were printed in Smyrna by the British and Foreign Bible Society. A second edition which was printed in Smyrna in 1850 was an almost exact reprint of the 1840 edition. A third edition followed in 1853 with 15,000 copies. The fourth edition was published in 1857 in Bucharest, and for the first time civil characters type was used. In 1859, two more editions were published. In 1866, a new "pocket" edition with text revised by Elias Riggs and Dr. Albert Long was printed in Constantinople. The New Testament was revised and reprinted a total of nine times. In the period from 1840 to 1860 the Eastern (Tarnovo) dialect was adopted as literary Bulgarian language and the Macedonian dialect, in which the New Testament had been translated, was widely rejected. By 1858 Neofit Rilski had finished large portion of the Old Testament. Riggs met with Neofit Rilski and discussed a possible revision of the Bulgarian New Testament to remove the Macedonian dialect elements. Neofit objected the revision, so Riggs took the translation and returned to Constantinople. In January 1859 Riggs invited the Bulgarian teacher Hristodul Kostovich to help him with the revision. In 1862 Long and Riggs visited the noted Bulgarian writer and poet Petko Rachov Slaveykov in Tryavna. Slaveykov agreed to help with the translation and began the work on the revising of Neofit's New Testament at once. Long joined the revision of the New Testament into the Eastern dialect in 1863 and later assisted with the translation of the Old Testament. In June 1871, after more than 12 years of revision and translation, 36,000 copies of the complete Bible translation in Bulgarian were published in Constantinople. The translation came to be known as the "Tsarigrad (Constantinople) Edition". Tsarigrad [or; Tsargrad, Tzargrad, Czargrad] Tsargrad is a Slavic name for the city or land of Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, and present-day Istanbul in Turkey. ‎Very Good Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 160 p., many b/w ills. and Syriac sections. (Mar Gabriyel) Deyr-el-Umur tarihi. Translated by P. Cebrail Aydin. Dayro d-Mor Gabriel (The Monastery of Saint Gabriel), also known as Deyrulumur, is the oldest surviving Syriac Orthodox monastery in the world. It is located on the Tur Abdin plateau near Midyat in the Mardin Province in southeastern Turkey. It has been involved in a dispute with the Turkish government that threatened its existence. Dayro d-Mor Gabriel was founded in 397 by the ascetic Mor Shmu'el (Samuel) and his student Mor Shem'un (Simon). According to tradition, Shem'un had a dream in which an Angel commanded him to build a House of Prayer in a location marked with three large stone blocks. When Shem'un awoke, he took his teacher to the place and found the stone the angel had placed. At this spot Mor Gabriel Monastery built. Scarce.‎
