ISBN 9782503523644.‎ ‎Emblematic Paintings of the Swedish Baroque is the first full-length study of the cycle of emblematic canvases hanging in the corridors at Skokloster Castle outside Stockholm. These imposing paintings were commissioned by a wealthy nobleman and cultural patron from Sweden's Age of Greatness and were inspired by images from one of the most important emblem books of the seventeenth century, Otto Vaenius's Emblemata Horatiana. The principal importance of the Skokloster paintings lies in the fact that they appear to be a unique instance of paintings wholly adapted from images in a printed emblem book, a phenomenon never previously recorded in emblem studies. As such, they prompt questions about the place of the emblem within the fine and applied arts, generic issues explored in some detail in the introductory essay. The study presents a detailed reconstruction of the paintings' place within a lost decorative milieu at the Uppland castle of Salsta, and offers interpretations of the role emblems played within its wider conceptive framework. The appeal of Vaenius to the commissioning patron is also examined, and through this, a broader consideration of the reception of literary emblematics in seventeenth-century Sweden. This marks a significant attempt at opening up the rich subject of the emblem in Sweden, a national tradition hitherto largely neglected and little understood within emblem studies. Emblematic Paintings of the Swedish Baroque is the result of extensive field and archival research in major public and private collections in Sweden, and documents a historically significant group of artworks little known outside Scandinavia. The introductory essay presents the necessary groundwork of the pictures' date, provenance, and probable circumstances of commission, as well as an extended reconstruction of the original context in which they were first displayed. Establishing that they were originally owned by Count Nils Bielke, the study examines the intellectual preoccupations of a Swedish nobleman, and the reasons he found the Neo-Stoic ideas promoted in Vaenius's emblems conducive to his interests and tastes. The study situates the Skokloster paintings within the intellectual framework of Great Power Sweden, conceiving of the pictures as attempts at private self-representation, but concomitantly aesthetic expressions of the nationalist-mytholopoeic movement promoted by the scholars Olof Rudbeck, Johan Peringskiold, and Urban Hjarne. This volume presents the paintings as an emblem text, reassembling the paintings in the order in which they occur in Vaenius, and providing each with a commentary on iconography, sources, and analogues. Each plate is accompanied by a moralizing gloss by the seventeenth-century French author and editor of Vaenius, Marin Le Roy, Sieur de Gomberville in the translation of Thomas Mannington Gibbs. The first section ('Historical and methodological issues') presents methodological bases for the study of emblematics and spiritual images, as well as the elements necessary for the Christian contextualisation of the corpus. The second section ('Exegesis of the Scriptures and the Creation'), complementary to the first section, is devoted to exegetical processes developed in different contexts and seeks to emphasise the correspondence between the exegesis of Sacred Scripture and the exegesis of the Creation, which are the two central symbolisms in Christianity. The third section ('The image in absentia') focuses on the most critical aspect of the encounter between the Word and the Image, in the form of a paradoxical iconoclastic image, already mentioned in the first section. The fourth section ('Rhetoric and poetics of the image') exposes the mutual exchanges between the word of the images and the images of the word. The last three sections all deal with the uses of figures in determined contexts. Thus, the fifth section ('The image performance') explores staged, incarnated, and exhibited figures, while the sixth section ('Circulation of images among different faiths') gathers studies about different confessional contexts in which spiritual images are used to support and feed the polemics, and the seventh section ('The efficient image') opens up the chronology toward the 19th century and then to our own time. In some manuscripts a hand already known as 'manus prima', can now be identified with those of scribes active at Vivarium. These hands were not simply copying orthodox texts, but critically examining those written by authors of different persuasions: we know now that a codex well-known for its Arian scholia was studied and annotated at Vivarium. Cassiodorus and his team of writers/translators were squirreling away on texts by Church Fathers and heretics, analysing them, taking from them what could be suitable, reading everything. So, Vivarium was a militantly Chalcedonian monastery, but also one where the alternatives, dubbed by modern scholars 'Arian scholia' were duly studied and annotated. These essays by Fabio Troncarelli are an example of 'integral palaeography' in the sense of the definition, by now a classic, of Leonard E. Boyle (Medieval Latin Palaeography, Author's Preface, p. xv). Through the highly specialised technique of demanding discipline, the author succeeds in reconstructing the intellectual climate and the historical setting of Vivarium. Ces trois dernieres pieces ne sont pas denuees d'interet, au contraire: on peut en reconstituer le texte VD primitif, ce qui cree un fondement solide pour observer les modifications textuelles de VD tout au long de la lignee manuscrite. L'etude du recueil, entamee par P.-P. Verbraken, a ete poursuivie apres sa mort par R. Demeulenaere -- qui avait ete son adjoint dans ses investigations pendant les dernieres annees de sa vie --, B. Coppieters 't Wallant et L. De Coninck; ces chercheurs ont pu disposer de ses papiers et de ceux de C. Lambot, conserves a l'abbaye de Maredsous. VD conserves d'avant 1100, ainsi que ceux du XIIe siecle qui reproduisent une ancienne forme textuelle et/ou structure globale du recueil n'ayant pas survecu ailleurs. ISBN 9782503540863.‎ ‎Anselm (1033-1109) described the Monologion, his first major theological work, as a model meditation on the divine essence; and he enjoined his potential critics to read Augustine's De trinitate diligently and then judge the Monologion by it. In following Anselm's admonition, I have paid particular attention to Anselm's claims about the persuasiveness of his arguments, and probed the cogency of some of the many arguments that make up the Monologion. The result is something like a critical companion to the Monologion. It is not meant to replace an actual reading of the Monologion, which is an experience worth having, since no interpretation or paraphrase can capture the feeling of wading through Anselm's analytic arguments. And I have resisted the common tendency of reading the Monologion merely as a prelude to its more evocative sequel, the Proslogion. Because Anselm's arguments attend to fundamental themes in philosophical theology, this book also provides comment on the state of early medieval philosophical theology and Anselm's unique contribution to it. The book has implications not only for our understanding of Anselm's thought and its relation to ancient and early medieval Christian tradition, but also for the ways in which theologians and philosophers since Anselm have appropriated his ideas. Since a good deal of that appropriation often overlooks the Monologion, this study should help towards a re-orientation to Anselm and his relevance to contemporary debates about theological method in general and analytic theology in particular. La chaine la plus interessante est l'Epitome de Procope de Gaza, qui contient 390 citations empruntees a une dizaine d'auteurs (entre le 3e et le 5e siecle). Il s'agit d'un instrument de travail original, qui se propose de deployer les virtualites de sens du texte biblique, en fournissant au lecteur un echantillonnage diversifie d'interpretations. L'Epitome sur le Cantique vient d'etre edite dans le Corpus christianorum (Series Graeca, 67). L'editeur montre ici comment le Cantique est interprete a travers l'Epitome, verset apres verset; il explicite le projet du cateniste et etudie sa methode de travail; il analyse les exegeses d'Apollinaire et de Cyrille, qui ne sont pas transmises en dehors de l'Epitome. Il etend l'enquete a d'autres chaines sur le Cantique en montrant, a partir d'une analyse precise des prologues, comment chacune introduit a la lecture du Cantique. The catalogue shows that the teaching of the creedal faith was assembled from snippets of, or whole, patristic works, homilies, personal professions of faith, and works of many other genres. In this catalogue crucial attention is paid to the contents of the manuscripts as a whole in which the creed explanation is found and how these collection volumes may have functioned.
