‎Summary Abscondi eloquium tuum in corde meo, « Thy word have I hid in mine heart » (Ps 119, 11). Under this title, colleagues, disciples and friends of Gilbert Dahan have decided, on the initiative and under the direction of Annie Noblesse, to address him a collection of Mélanges in homage to his scientific work and the profound renewal he has brought to various fields of research: the phenomenology of medieval liturgical games, relations between Jewish intellectuals and Christians in the Middle Ages, and medieval Christian exegesis. Based on his interest in medieval exegesis, its history and reception, they offer twenty-one contributions, classified under five headings: elucidating, glossing and commenting, interpreting, conferring and preaching. A study of the musical setting of Ps 101 by Pierre César Abeille (1674-1733), whose works appeared in a manuscript of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, also pays tribute to the musician and music lover to whom this book is dedicated. The volume also includes a list of Gilbert Dahan's works and publications. Abscondi eloquium tuum in corde meo, « J'ai ton parler reserré en mon cueur » (Ps 119, 11). Sous ce titre des collègues, des disciples, des amis de Gilbert Dahan ont souhaité, à l'initiative et sous la direction d'Annie Noblesse, lui adresser un recueil de Mélanges en hommage à son ?uvre scientifique et au profond renouvellement qu'il a apporté dans divers champs de recherche : la phénoménologie des jeux liturgiques médiévaux, les relations entre les intellectuels juifs et les chrétiens au Moyen Âge ou encore l'exégèse chrétienne médiévale. ‎Summary On 20 October 1870 pope Pius IX adjourned the First Vatican Council, because of the Italian Rissorgimento troops approaching the city of Rome. Given that the Council had only opened less than a year prior, on 8 December 1869, the act was emblematic. ‎Summary Andrew of Saint Victor was one of the most prominent biblical scholars of the twelfth century. He was a regular canon of the Parisian abbey of St Victor, founded in 1108, which in the twelfth century had developed into a prestigious center of spiritual learning, closely connected to the nascent university in Paris. Because of his frequent use of Jewish exegetical materials, Andrew's commentaries are a rich source for the history both of biblical hermeneutics and of inter-religious dialogue during the Middle Ages. His Isaiah commentary caused outrage among medieval Christian scholars because it eschewed traditional christological interpretations, and instead offered a reading "according to the Hebrew." This translation makes this work accessible in English for the first time. The source text of this volume was published in 2021 by Frans van Liere (Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis, 53C). ‎Summary The present volume develops a new conceptual perspective on late-medieval meditation, particularly in Hugh of Saint-Victor, Guigo II, and Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. For the most part, modern commentaries on the subject have relegated rhetoric to the margins of attention, if not to complete silence. In contrast, this book contends that these writers arrived at their distinctive conceptions of meditation by drawing from the Ciceronian rhetorical tradition. They did so by deepening earlier rhetorical treatments of inventio while adapting them to the Christian life. The examination of this topic is divided into three principal and related aspects. First, meditation is studied as a rhetorical notion for a specific kind of mnemonic, rational, and affective exercise. Second, that notion is used to shed light on meditation as a compositional textual practice whose outcomes bear striking analogy to what Umberto Eco called the 'open works' of the Western avant-garde. Finally, meditation emerges as a form of literary reception required for approaching and construing certain works. In exploring each of these aspects, the study shows that rhetoric radically informs, not only Hugh's, Guigo's, and Bonaventure's engagement with meditation, but also their views on salvation history, monastic life, divine revelation, scientific learning, and biblical hermeneutics. Thus, despite the omission or relative insignificance of the ars bene dicendi in most modern investigations, it is argued that rhetoric lies at the core of these authors' entire religious outlook. In this way, the present volume aims to contribute to a better understanding of these medieval figures by filling an important gap in the scholarly literature. Dès Aristote, la science la plus haute se présente comme une discipline philosophique qu'il appelle épistémè théologikè, « science théologique ». ‎Summary Principia were an obligatory step on the medieval university path to becoming a master of theology. As inaugural lectures on the four books of the Sentences of Peter Lombard, they provided the first opportunity for a scholastic to defend a philosophical-theological worldview. These lectures were also a way for the theologian, now a sententiarius, to present himself and to make a name for himself, initially by delivering in a speech an introduction to the course and by debating with his fellows. The present book takes a collective approach to offer a survey of the evolution of the genre, mapping the dissemination of this exercise during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries across Europe. As an academic exercise, principia bridge ideas, texts, authors, and institutions across time. Exploring the corpus of surviving principia illuminates the philosophical creativity cultivated in the faculties of theology. The papers in these volumes thus not only discuss the structural aspects of principia, but also treat the philosophical and theological ideas defended and attacked during the principial debates and the topics and imagery used in the speeches. ‎Summary Thomas Gallus (d. 1246) was the Abbot of Vercelli in the north of Italy. Initially a canon regular in the abbey of St Victor in Paris, he helped found a new monastery and church in the home town of his patron, Cardinal Guala Bicchieri. As well as commenting on the Canticle of Canticles three times, Thomas was renowned for his expositions of the works of Dionysius the Areopagite, commentaries which earned him the title magister in hierarchia (master of the hierarchies). This volume contains the first translation in any language of his Glosses on the Angelic (or Celestial) Hierarchy (completed in 1224), as well as his more detailed Explanation of the Angelic Hierarchy (finished in 1243). The commentaries are fascinating for their insights into Thomas's teaching that love has a higher access to an experience of God than the intellect, the role of the angelic hierarchies in the mystical return of the soul, the psychological interpretation of the angels as representing faculties of the soul, and the use of symbols representing analogical features of the divine. ‎Summary Just as apparently universal ideas of inwardness are different over time, so the idea of the self in relation to others is subject to historical change and dependent on different contexts. Against a shared background of late antique and early medieval Christianity the thinkers who are the subject of this book develop their thoughts of a relational self within their wider concerns. Augustine is the thinker of interiority, but also of the social life. For Augustine, the opacity of others, even of oneself, and how to overcome it, is a main concern. Cassian writes about the ideal of solitude, yet neither the abbas who are the subject of his Conversations, nor his readers can avoid the company of others. For Cassian, human fellowship is instrumental in reaching the desired virtues of detachment, which then enables love for others. Gregory the Great searches for the right balance of the contemplative and the active life, but even the contemplative is not a separate individual. Gregory's instruction of the leaders of the Church emphasises the need to widen in compassion, against the constant danger for the preachers of hypocrisy and the swollenness of pride and arrogance. These three authors were among the most influential sources in later ages. Their echoes resonated in the twelfth century, when a renewed interest in interiority raises the question how the twelfth-century 'inner man' relates to others. They are meant to help form every Christian, but particularly those clerics who have the responsibility to issue judgments and hear confessions in the Church, and to develop in them a disciplined discernment and a habit of addressing issues as they arise in personal and community life in the light of Scripture and of the long experience of the Church. They are brilliantly arranged around the device of questionnaires which fosters a case-based and tentative approach to the resolution of problems while avoiding abstraction and striving to mitigate legalism. The work was influential in its own region, but obtained much greater resonance through its eventual absorption into the Decretum of Burchard of Worms, thus affecting the whole Western canonical tradition.‎

D'une part, ils traitent de l'influence « ordinaire », celle des corps supérieurs connus des astronomes : son étendue, ses mécanismes, ses limites. D'autre part, ils dépeignent une influence « hors normes », celle des sphères, des planètes et des étoiles dont l'existence est postulée par la foi chrétienne : le ciel empyrée, demeure des bienheureux, ou les corps célestes métamorphosés par l'Apocalypse. Dotés, à première vue, de propriétés contraires à l'ordre naturel, ces cieux sont néanmoins décrits avec la philosophie naturelle aristotélicienne. La théologie s'adapte donc à la science, mais en renouvelant cette dernière : en englobant le cas des cieux « atypiques », la théorie de l'influence céleste en ressort profondément modifiée. Il s'agit d'une clé pour comprendre l'innovation du savoir scientifique médiéval et, peut-être, pour penser les évolutions scientifiques ultérieures. Zudem hebt sie sich von den meisten anderen Exempelsammlungen durch das ihr zugrundeliegende Gliederungsprinzip ab, welches sich an der Dreiteilung der mittelalterlichen Christenheit in Säkularklerus, Regularklerus und Laienstand orientiert: Streng hierarchisch geordnet, werden der Reihe nach Geschichten über die Mitglieder dieser drei Stände erzählt. Von den Päpsten bis hinab zu den Theologiestudenten, von den Äbten und Abtissinnen bis hinab zu den Laienbrüdern und Beginen, von den Kaisern und Königen bis hinab zu den gesellschaftlichen Randexistenzen wird vor uns das ganze Panoptikum der spätmittelalterlichen Gesellschaft entfaltet. Dem so entworfenen Abbild der Menschenwelt werden in den ersten Teilen der Sammlung eine Marienvita, zahlreiche Marienmirakel, Hostienwunder, Kreuzzugsgeschichte und einige Geschichten über die Engel vorangestellt. Lediglich der letzte, vermutlich sekundär hinzugefügte Teil der Sammlung weicht von der Gesamtkonzeption des Werkes ab. Er vereint in sich eine Liste altfranzösischer Sprichwörter nebst deren lateinischen Nachdichtungen, Proben der Vagantenpoesie des Hugo Primas und weitere Verse erbaulichen und unterhaltsamen Inhalts. Der lateinische Text der Sammlung ist stellenweise von altfranzösischen Einsprengseln durchsetzt, die in einigen Fällen das Ausmaß kleinerer Gedichte erreichen. Er wird hier zum ersten Mal vollständig nach allen drei bekannten Überlieferungsträgern, Handschriften des 14. und 15. Jahrhunderts, kritisch herausgegeben.‎

‎Summary Andrew of Saint Victor was one of the most prominent biblical scholars of the twelfth century. He was a regular canon of the Parisian abbey of St Victor, which in the twelfth century had developed into a prestigious center of spiritual learning, closely connected to the nascent university in Paris. Because of his frequent use of Jewish exegetical materials, Andrew's commentaries are a rich source for the history both of biblical hermeneutics and of inter-religious dialogue during the Middle Ages. His Isaiah commentary caused outrage among medieval Christian scholars because it eschewed traditional christological interpretations, and instead offered a reading "secundum Hebraeos." Scholars have seen Andrew of St Victor as standing at the cradle of a scholarly interest in the Biblical text, which influenced scholars such as the fourteenth-century Franciscan Nicholas of Lyra, and, in the long run, reformers such as John Wycliff, Martin Luther, and John Calvin.‎

‎Summary In his richly documented and still valuable study of Aquinas and the Church Fathers, published in 1946, Gottfried Geenen, o.p. noted that the study of this aspect of Thomas Aquinas's thought was just beginning to take place. More than seventy years later considerable progress has been made, both historically and doctrinally, not at least due to the technological advances in the area of the study of Aquinas' writings. It has been argued both that Aquinas had a remarkable knowledge of a wide range of the Church Fathers and that he was actively engaged in acquiring new material from hitherto unknown Fathers. Due to Thomas' profound commitment to both Latin and Greek patristic sources he was not only able to draw on the rich tradition of the past but also explore new possibilities and solutions. This commitment and interaction between tradition and speculative reason has led some to claim tentatively that one might characterize Thomas Aquinas' theology as being ad mentem patrum. The goal of this volume is to explore ways to corroborate this claim. In order to do so, the contributions investigate the presence and use of the Church Fathers in Aquinas' thought both historically and systematically.
