Sefer Milhamot H. : Kolel Ta'Anot Ha-Kera'I Salmon Ben Yeruhim Neged Rav Sa'adyah Ga'on = Book of the Wars of the Lord
Nyu York; Beit Midrash Ha-Rabanim De-Amerika. 1934. Hardcover. Sef7. ja . Original Cloth. 4to. 14 132 pages. 28 cm. First edition. First appearance. In Hebrew. Preface in English. Book of the wars of the Lord; containing the polemics of the Karaite Salmon ben Yeruhim against Saadia Gaon. The Book of the Wars of YHWH remained in manuscript until it was published together with a commentary by Israel Davidson under the title 'The Books of the Wars of the Lord' New York 1934. Salmon Ben Jeroham Sulaym ibn Ruhaym; tenth century Karaite polemicist and writer a fervent spokesman for the Mourners of Zion Avlei Zion a native of Erez Israel or Iraq. According to Karaite tradition he was the teacher of Saadiah Gaon an impossibility since Salmon was much the younger man of the two. However the tradition may possibly reflect some actual personal conflict between them which could partially explain Salmon's extreme hatred of Saadiah. Salmon's principal work Milhamot Adonai written in Hebrew is a rhymed attack on the Rabbanites and on Saadiah. Even for an age characterized by abusive polemics the language of the book is unusually vehement and the author treats Saadiah more as a personal enemy than a theological adversary. In his subject matter Salmon merely repeats the arguments of older Karaite polemicists but the violent language and quasi-poetic form are all his own. If the hypothesis that Salmon is the same person as Ibn al-Sakawayh is correct Saadiah refuted his attacks in a special work only fragments of which remain. EJ 2008 Subjects: 880-06 Karaites. In 1919 he found in some Greek-Hebrew genizah fragment palimpsests published by F. C. Burkitt in Fragments of the Book of Kings 1897 and by C. Taylor in Hebrew-Greek Cairo Genizah Palimpsests 1900 some of Yannai's kerovot which were thought lost and which he later published with notes by L. Ginzberg Mahzor Yannai 1919 . Added title page: The "He-Halutz" movement in Poland 1917-1929. The He-Haluts was a Zionist pioneering movement in Poland. The founders of He- Aluts believed that no political or propaganda accomplishment would benefit Zionism in the long run unless it were complemented by deeds of personal fulfillment which became a primary objective in the organizations overall ideology. In other words to actually implement the principles of He- Aluts the individual was expected both to identify with the Histadrut Labor Federation and to live on a cooperative kibbutz in Palestine. On an ideological level the basic foundations of the He- Aluts movement were consolidated in 1917. Based on a combination of universal socialist and nationalist concepts they drew ideological influence from the Tseire Tsiyon party. He- Aluts continued to evolve in Russia even after the change of regime. The fundamentals of agricultural training farms and links with the budding kibbutz movement in Palestine were laid down. The Fourth Aliyah 19241929 marked the first test of the populist concept since at the time of the Third Aliyah 19191923 the previous immigration waveHe- Aluts had still been in an amorphous ideological phase and had been a marginal factor in Diaspora public affairs. When He- Aluts held its world conference in 1923 the movement numbered only 7 000 registered members but membership increased to tens of thousands within a year and a half. This massive growth led to a change in the organizations social structure. High-school students and middle-class youth were now replaced with thousands of working-class youngsters and unemployed individuals including members of Zionist Socialist parties. YIVO Encyclopedia; He-Haluts; article written by Israel Oppenheim . Maimonides Moses 1135-1204. Dalalat al-h Airin. Notes by Louis Ginzberg on pages 129-144. "Works consulted" on pages ix-x. Efros 1891-1981 was a Hebrew educator poet and scholar. Born in Ostrog the Ukraine he went to the United States in 1905. He served for a time as rabbi and in 1918 founded the Baltimore Hebrew College and the Teachers Training School. He was professor of Hebrew at Johns Hopkins University rabbi of Temple Beth El in Buffalo professor of Semitics at the University of Buffalo and Hunter College N. Y. C. where he founded the Hebrew Division; in 1945 he was appointed professor of Jewish philosophy and modern Hebrew literature at Dropsie College Philadelphia. Efros served as president of the Histadrut Ivrit of America. He settled in Israel in 1955 and served as rector of Tel Aviv University. In 1960 he was elected honorary president of the university. His works on Jewish philosophy include The Problem of Space in Jewish Medieval Philosophy Philosophical Terms in the Moreh Nebukim Judah Halevi as Poet and Thinker Ha-Pilosofyah ha-Yehudit ha-Attikah Ancient Jewish Philosophy: A Study in Metaphysics and Ethics Studies in Medieval Jewish Philosophy and studies on Saadiah Gaon and Abraham B.
