Extensively researched reports submitted by a congregant on the history of the rituals around seating at Shearith Israel and the importance of continuity of their traditions. He argues that this change would move the service away from its unique Western Sephardic style and closer to that of Modern Orthodoxy an Ashkenazi movement. Also included are various papers connected to celebrations and special events at the Synagogue and brochures on the building�s history legacy and capital campaign. Some papers are folded. 24 items. In 1888 after a few years� study at Slobodka yeshivah he immigrated to the United States. There he earned a living as a street vendor then as a shop assistant and Hebrew teacher; at night he studied English and other subjects to meet college-entrance requirements. After completing his studies at Columbia University he was director of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum and chaplain at the Sing Sing prison. In 1905 he began teaching Talmud at the Jewish Theological Seminary New York and in 1915 was appointed professor of medieval Hebrew literature. He is often referred to as Rabbeinu Bachya�. He was the author of the first Jewish system of ethics written in Arabic in 1040 under the title Al Hidayah ila Faraid al-Qulub Guide to the Duties of the Heart and translated into Hebrew by Judah ibn Tibbon in the years 1161-80 under the title Chovot ha-Levavot Instruction in the Duties of the Heart. Little is known of his life except that he bore the title of dayan judge at the rabbinical court. He began to study Kant's philosophy in 1786 and Kant himself was very impressed by his work. This support led Maimon to begin having his work published. Maimon's interest in Kabbalah Christiantiy - he tried to have a Lutheran pastor convert him--and other controversial philosophies caused him to be labeled a heretic.
