ril. II volume, che configura una vera e propria biografia "sacra" di Maometto, propone gli elementi essenziali per conoscere e comprendere la figura del Profeta secondo la prospettiva islamica. Due i generi letterari tradizionali in cui tali elementi sono stati espressi: il primo è il genere biografico, rappresentato dalle Vite antiche di Maometto, delle quali nel volume è presentata una scelta dei primi testi sulle imprese del Profeta che non ha equivalenti nell'editoria occidentale. Il secondo genere, quello sapienziale dei Detti (Hadith), raccoglie le sentenze più significative attribuite a Maometto. Tratti dalle raccolte canoniche più autorevoli, i Detti rappresentano per i musulmani una scrittura sacra a tutti gli effetti, nonché un complemento alla parola di Dio che è contenuta nel Corano. Si tratta dunque di opere fondamentali, che ci permettono di vedere "dal di dentro" l'immenso valore attribuito al Profeta dai fedeli dell'Islam, un valore che si perpetua da secoli ed è oggi condiviso da più di un miliardo di credenti.

brossura Storicamente, nei paesi mediorientali, una delle forme pittoriche maggiormente diffuse è stata l'illustrazione dei manoscritti. Le miniature più antiche e ricche giunte fino a noi sono quelle che accompagnano la traduzione araba dei testi scientifici greci. Con l'avvento dell'Islam, nel VII secolo, la pittura figurativa si sviluppa in parallelo con l'arte della calligrafia. Grazie al suo carattere particolare, l'alfabeto arabo si presta benissimo a un uso decorativo. Scrittura e pittura, inoltre, sono considerati due aspetti della stessa forma espressiva, dato che il calligrafo e il pittore usano il calamo nella stessa maniera. Non corrisponde del tutto al vero l'idea che, nel mondo musulmano, la rappresentazione della figura vivente sarebbe proibita o quantomeno tollerata solo fra i musulmani sciiti. In realtà, la proibizione della raffigurazione dovrebbe riguardare solamente l'immagine di Dio, che è considerato irrappresentabile (un'idea questa, radicata nel monoteismo abramico che si oppone direttamente al politeismo idolatra).
