Rappresenta una spiritualità profonda e una vocazione specifica che ha inizio prima dell'affermazione della religione del Profeta e va ricercata, prima di tutto, nelle radici mazdee. È portatore di un messaggio il cui significato nei secoli non è mai venuto meno e dialoga con gli spirituali di ogni tradizione, orientali e occidentali. "Nell'Islam iranico" è il risultato di più di vent'anni di ricerche, una vera e propria "summa". Non si rivolge ai soli specialisti perché Henry Corbin, traduttore, filologo e storico è convinto tuttavia che non possano essere i meri dati eruditi a svelare il significato di una civiltà spirituale. Per lui è fondamentale che il fatto religioso sia lasciato mostrarsi secondo un metodo fenomenologico e la sua comprensione intima non sia snaturata da considerazioni che rimangono su altri livelli.

Forse davvero - come ci ricorda Henry Corbin - è nella cerimonia del matrimonio iraniano che ancora oggi è possibile rilevare la traccia di uno dei significati più alti e vertiginosi del discorso amoroso del sufismo: il marito non guarderà direttamente la moglie mentre entra nella sala, ma ne scruterà un'immagine riflessa in uno specchio. Per dire che nell'amore vero, quello che non può non essere unico e unire le più semplici cose a Dio stesso, non c'è possesso e nemmeno una relazione tra semplici oggetti, ma un gioco vertiginoso di rispecchiamenti, di luci e di ombre, un gioco il cui mistero sacro è lo specchio stesso. L'esperienza dell'amore per un sufi deve essere visione della visione ed è quanto ci ha insegnato il grande mistico Ruzbehàn Bagli ShiIràzi a cui Corbin dedica la prima parte di questo terzo volume de "Nell'Islam iranico" e che è un esempio di ricerca spirituale assoluta. La seconda parte del volume esplora un problema di non facile soluzione seppur importantissimo: i complessi rapporti tra shi'ismo e sufismo. Per il mondo shi'ita la figura chiave è certamente quella di Haydar ÀmolT, che diffonde la teosofia di Ibn 'Arabi correggendola nel quadro della dottrina imamologica. Come sottolinea Corbin, è la fonte e la garanzia di una vera esperienza spirituale in grado di poter ravvivare la lettera rivelata, anche per un sufismo che spesso "non osa dire il proprio nome", cioè la sua vicinanza o implicita adesione ai principi dello shi'ismo.

Nel quarto e ultimo volume di "Nell'Islam iranico" - la summa del suo pensiero filosofico, della sua ricerca e del suo lavoro di ermeneutica - Corbin ha finalmente modo di mostrare come in Iran si siano mantenute vive le più importanti correnti spirituali e filosofiche della tradizione esoterica shi'ita, anche nei secoli che, in Occidente, corrispondono all'età moderna e contemporanea. Nella Isfahan capitale del nuovo impero safavide, a partire dal XVI secolo, lo shi'ismo ha corso il rischio di divenire una religione addomesticata priva di originalità nelle sue scuole di pensiero. Personaggi come Qazi Sa'id Qumi e Mulla Sadra Shirazi - , tuttavia, non solo ne hanno mantenuto viva la forza spirituale, ma l'hanno rinnovata con opere e sistemi filosofici profondamente originali. Ancora più sentita ed empatica è la ricostruzione corbiniana della scuola Shaykhi - , che dal Settecento fino ad anni non troppo distanti dai nostri ha presentato grandi personaggi spirituali e rimesso al centro gli insegnamenti degli Imam duodecimani. Non a caso, il grande affresco dell'Iran shi'ita viene fatto terminare da Corbin con un capitolo dedicato al grande mistero, e principio di speranza, che nutre la coscienza religiosa shi'ita: l'attesa del Dodicesimo Imam, l'Imam che da secoli si è occultato per tornare nel tempo della resurrezione, ma che non ha mai cessato di apparire agli occhi e nel cuore di chi è in grado di vederlo, ancora. Il volume contiene l'indice analitico di tutti i quattro tomi.
