‎Beschreibung Der Kronung Solimanni Des dritten dieses Nahmens Konigs in Persien Und Desjenigen. - [EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE CORONATION OF THE EIGHTH SAHA OF SAFAVID IRAN]‎

‎Genff, Widerhold, 1681. Folio (340 x 210 mm). Recently bound in a magnificent pastiche-binding of brown half calf with gilt red leather title-label to elaborately gilt spine. Vellum corners. Title-page with stains. A few marginal repairs, not affecting text. (8), 82 pp.‎

‎Exceedingly rare first German translation of Chardin’s “Le Couronnement de Soleimaan troisieme” (1671) - his report on the coronation of the new Persian king and what happened during the first years of his reign. Returning to Persia on the way home to Europe, Chardin witnessed the coronation of Suleiman III in 1669. Chardin’s works are considered some of the finest works of early Western scholarship on Iran and the Subcontinent in general, and the present work offered Europe a rare glimpse into the customs of the Royal house of Persia. “Chardin details the ceremonies in [the present work], with a preface that laid out the parallels between the French and Persian monarchies. Chardin portrays a filial bond between the two monarchies. The Persian shah, he declares, calls “Your Majesty [Louis XIV] his brother” due to their shared grandeur. Chardin proclaims, “The Kind of France is the greatest Emperor in Europe as he [the shah] is the most powerful Prince in Asia.” He emphasizes his admiration for Persia and its likeness to France: “Of all the vast Empires of the Orient … there is not one that should not yield to Persia, for the temperature of the air, for genius that is more reasonable than other places and is closest to our own, and for all the excellent and rare things that are found there in abundance.” (Mokhberi, The Persian Mirror) Born in Paris in a Hugenot (Protestant) family, Jean Chardin (1643-1713) undertook his travels to Persia because of his father's position as a jeweler and shareholder in the French East India Company. Chardin set out in 1664, traveling through Turkey, the Black Sea, Georgia and Armenia. Soon after his arrival in Persia he received a commission to create jewelry for Shah Abbas II, who died in 1666 and was succeeded by Shah Safi. After witnessing the latter's coronation [Described here], Chardin went on India and finally returned to Paris in 1670. In 1671, he published an account of the coronation and in the same year set off for Persia again, arriving in Isfahan in 1673 and remaining there for several years, before once more visiting India and returning home in 1677. With the persecution of the Hugenots in France, he moved to England in 1680. ""Travel restarted with 17th-century missionaries, whose medical and pedagogical expertise helped counterbalance Orthodox (or pagan) reservations. Dominican Prefects Dortelli D'Ascoli and Giovanni da Lucca (1630s) extended Giorgio Interiano's description of Circassia (and Abkhazia). Theatine proselytisers targeted Mingrelia/western Georgia (Capuchins the eastern provinces) - the Vatican's Fide Press further contributed by printing the first Georgian books (Chikobava/Vateishvili). Many, including mission-head Don Pietro Avitabile (1626-1638), recounted their experiences. Prefect to Mingrelia, Joseph Marie Zampi, a 23-year denizen from approximately 1645, contributed a third significant source in his description of Mingrelian religious practice. This he handed to Jean Chardin (1643-1713) in 1672. A French traveller who became English(!) ambassador in Holland, Chardin translated and incorporated it as a substantial part of his own description of a sometimes perilous journey through Transcaucasia (1672-3), which reflects Ottoman and Persian influence in western and eastern parts, respectively - a Turkish organized slave-trade flourished from various Mingrelian ports. Linguistically, Zampi revealingly observed that the ecclesiastical language, Georgian, was as difficult for even the Mingrelian priesthood to understand as Latin was for Italian peasants!"" (Speake, The Literature of Travel and Exploration, 1, 199-202). (Brunet I, 1802 – A later French edition). (Graesse II, P. 121).‎

‎København & Hørsholm, 1932-54. Small folio. All nine issues in the original printed wrappers. In excellent condition. With numerous maps and plans.‎

‎""...the maps from the Danish Meteorological Institute. These are remarkable for their information value and because they represent a cooperative international effort to report ice conditions in a systematic way that was sustained over decades."" (Florence Fetterer: Piecing together the Arctic's sea ice history back to 1850, in: Carbon Brief). ""These charts, created by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), provide observed and inferred sea ice extent for each summer month from 1893 to 1956. From 1893 to 1956, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) created charts of observed and inferred sea ice extent for each summer month. These charts are based on compiled observations of ice conditions reported by a variable network of national organizations, shore-based observers, scientific expeditions, and ships as detailed in each report"" in cases where no observations were available, the lead mapmakers extrapolated further ice cover using their knowledge of ice movement."" (DMI - Danish Meteorological Institute). The early surveillance of the Arctic Sea Ice has been of immense importance to the development of climate change science. It is the cause of the determination of global warming and the primary proof we have of the deterioration of sea ice, the heating of the oceans and the rice of Arctic temperatures. These seminal charts constitute one of the very most important sources to our understanding of this world-threatening phenomenon. ""Over the last three centuries, geographers, oceanographers, geophysicists, glaciologists, climatologists, and geoengineers have shown great interest in Arctic Ocean sea ice extent. Many of these experts envisaged an ice-free Arctic Ocean. This article studies three stages of that narrative: the belief in an ice-free Arctic Ocean, the potential for one, and the threat of one. Eighteenth and nineteenth century interest in accessing navigable polar sea routes energised the belief in an iceless polar sea" an early twentieth century North Hemispheric warm spell combined with mid-century cold war geostrategy to open the potential for drastic sea ice loss" and, most recently, climate models have illuminated the threat of a seasonally ice-free future, igniting widespread concerns about the impact this might have on Earth's natural and physical systems. This long narrative of an ice-free Arctic Ocean can help to explain modern-day scepticism of human-induced environmental change in the far north."" ‎"(DANIEL, GABRIEL). - AN IMAGINARY TRAVEL IN THE CARTESIAN WORLD.‎

‎Iter per Mundum Cartesii (and) Novae Difficultates a Peripatetico Propositae Auctori Iteneris per Mundum Cartesii Circa cognitionem Brutorum. Cum Refutatione duplicis defensionis Systematis Mundi Cartesii. (2 vols).‎

‎Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgang, 1694. Uncut in contemp. blank boards. Title handwritten on spine. Spine a little rubbed. (22),307 pp. and (8),159 pp. Textillustrations in woodcut illustrating Cartesian physics and world system. A large copy, few marginal brownspots. Previous owners name on fly-leaf, Vilhelm Maar, Danish historian of medicine.‎

‎First Latin edition (The French original from 1690 Voyage du Monde de Descartes) of this imaginary travel to find Descartes on the moon and in the upper spheres. The work is one of the most importent anti-Cartesian polemics of the 1690's and it attacs the whole of Descartes system in a satirical way.""It aimes principally at the sharp Cartesian distinction between body and soul, related in a satirical fashion the voyage of the disembodied souls of the narrator, of Mersanne, and of another old friend of Descartes in the upper spheres. On their way to visit Descartes in the third heaven, they meet the souls of Aristotle and the disciples of descartes (clearly refelcting here the philosophical opinions of Gabriel Daniel himself). One of the articles of that treaty stipulates that the Cartesians will refer to Aristotle with more respect, whereas the Aristotelians will refrain from calling Descartes ""Enthusiast"", ""Madman"", ""Heretick"" or ""Atheist"" - all of these evidently labels commonly used by the opponents of Descartes at that time."" (Michael Heyd in ""Be Sober and Reasonable""). The work was published anonymous and earlier sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe. -‎

‎The exceedingly rare first German translation of ""the first history of Carolina, with a very observant report of the life, customs, and natural history of the colony"" (Streeter). John Lawson’s work offers a largescale portrayal of the customs and traditions of the Native American tribes during that era, while also serving as a meticulous record of the Carolinas' geography, climate, flora, fauna, and aquatic life, it constitute one of the most valuable contributions to the early history of Carolina and is considered to be one of the first travel account of the early 18th-century colonies. Lawson’s book provided a meticulous account of his 550-mile, 57-day journey through the backcountry of what would eventually become the states of both South Carolina and North Carolina. Beginning in the port city of Charles Town in December 1700, Lawson and nine other adventurers traveled northwestward toward present-day Charlotte, North Carolina. From there he explored the Piedmont basins of the Catawba and Yadkin Rivers before turning eastward toward present-day Bath, arriving there late in February 1701. John Lawson (1674 - 1711) was an English explorer, adventurer and writer. From 1700 onwards, Lawson was instrumental in the exploration and development of the northern part of what was then the British colony of Carolina, today's US state of North Carolina. Little is known about Lawson's life before his arrival in Carolina. In 1700 he traveled to America and arrived in Charleston where Lawson began a two-month expedition by canoe up the Santee River with five other British and various Indian guides to explore the then unknown land north of Charleston. The expedition ended about 1,000 kilometers further north at the mouth of the Pamlico River (now in Beaufort County). During the expedition, Lawson took extensive notes, which eventually was published in the present work. After the expedition ended, Lawson acquired land in the area where the expedition had ended and worked there, first privately and then on behalf of the colonial administration as a surveyor. At this point, a few scattered Europeans had already settled in the area. Lawson's holdings grew into North Carolina's first permanent settlement, Bath, which soon prospered and became North Carolina's most important port of entry. Lawson was involved with the Swiss Christoph von Graffenried and Franz Ludwig Michel in the founding of North Carolina's second oldest city, New Bern, by Swiss and German immigrants in 1710. Lawson was kidnapped and subsequently killed by the Tuscarora in 1711 after they noticed that Lawson had tried to take advantage of them in a trade. This event led to a deterioration in the climate between the Europeans and the Tuscarora and thus contributed to the outbreak of the Tuscarora War, which, after the initial successes of the Tuscarora, ended with their expulsion. ‎One of the scarce issues with the printed ""Drawback"" on the title-page beneath the year, INDICATING THAT THE EDITION WAS INTENDED FOR EXPORT. The 1794 Act for Repealing the Duties on paper... allowed the refond of duty paid on paper used for books intended for export. To qualify, the paper used had to be watermarked with a year, 1794 or later (this copy marked ""94"", and the refund or drawback could only be claimed by a printer, publisher or bookseller exporting it as merchandice.‎

He was largely influenced by the humanistic teachings of the French literature and philosophy, but his reading was wider than France and his sympathies were cosmopolitan. The most celebrated of his works is Demokritos, oder hinterlassene Papiere eines lachenden Philosophen (Demokritos, or the literary remains of a laughing philosopher, 1832-40)."" (Wikipedia).‎
