Relating to Volume I, Hill 75: 'Dampier was the best known and probably the most intelligent of the famous group of buccaneers that tormented the Spaniard in the South Seas from 1680 to 1720. his industry in taking notes of all he saw was equaled by his pains in preserving them from destruction. His first voyage took him from Virginia to Spanish America and across the Pacific to the East Indies. He traveled extensively in the orient on several voyages which lasted from 1683 to 1691. It was on one of these trips that the first landing was made by the English on Australian shores'. Dampier, an English buccaneer and explorer and one of the more colorful characters sailing in the 17th and 18th centuries, published his various experiences sporadically. He was the first English navigator to assemble a natural history collection. His first book appeared in 1697 followed by another in 1699, and a third in 1703, each volume issued separately and independent of the others. A folding map in volume I is a double hemisphere map of the globe. This set contains the material written by Dampier himself.‎

Samuel Daniell (1775-1811) est un peintre et un dessinateur anglais qui arriva en Afrique du Sud le 9 décembre 1799. Il fut nommé secrétaire et artiste de l'expédition de 1801-1802 ralliant le Cap de Bonne-Espérance au Bechuanaland, menée par P.J. Truter et William Somerville. De retour en Angleterre, Daniell publia Paysages et animaux africains (1804-1805) grâce au soutien de son oncle le peintre Thomas Daniell et de son frère, le peintre et graveur William Daniell. Il partit ensuite pour Ceylan (l'actuel Sri Lanka), où il fit des esquisses de paysages et de personnes avant de mourir de la fièvre tropicale. Les textes accompagnant chaque illustration sont de Somerville et de Sir John Barrow, un géographe et explorateur britannique qui participa lui aussi aux premières expéditions britanniques en Afrique du Sud. Samuel Daniell dessinait des animaux dans leur habitat naturel, et son travail était apprécié pour la précision et l'attention portée aux détails. Le recueil comporte également des croquis de personnes rencontrées au cours de l'expédition et plusieurs paysages saisissants. Thomas Sutton écrit à propos du présent ouvrage: 'The coloured plates represent local scenery, animals singly or in groups in their natural surroundings, native types, and views of kraals' (p.107). Il poursuit: 'It may safely be said that never before had drawings of animals been presented so beautifully in their natural scenery. Particularly fine are the plates of the gnu, springbok, and the hippopotamus. The landscapes are equally fine, those of Sitsikamma, with the interlacing jungle trees and elephants watering, the Hottentot Kraal, and the Korah Hottentot Village being lovely things. Apart from these, such plates as the Halt of a Boor's Family and Boors returning from Hunting are valuable records of early itinerant life in South Africa ... L'ouvrage est divisé en quatre parties : la première étudie les costumes, le mobilier, les traditions et les accessoires chez les grecs et les romains; la seconde, les usages militaires des grecs et des romains; la troisième, les usages religieux des israélites et la quatrième, les usages religieux de Perse. Colas annonce pour la dernière partie 60 planches dont les 6 dernières non numérotées ce qui n'est pas le cas ici. En revanche, les explications pour les planches pour ce volume s'arrêtent à la 54e planches, sans manque de texte. D'autre part, il annonce un total de 353 planches mais en dehors des 6 gravures "supplémentaires", le nombre de gravures correspond à leur description dans le présent ouvrage.
