The Voyage of Commodore Anson Round the World.
London UK Dean and Munday No date of publication. Hardcover No indication of printing history. Fair: Shows heavy wear; binding slightly cocked; heavy rubbing and moderate soiling and dampstaining; binding just starting at front hinge but remains secure; some pencil doodles and notes at endpapers; dampstaining upper portion of the last few pages; text clean. NOT a Remainder Book-Club or Ex-Library. 12mo. 180pp. Plain boards with quarter leather backstrip with gilt titles and bars. No indication of printing history but most likely the later eighteenth century. Hardback: No DJ 'as issued'. One of the most popular nautical narratives of the 18th-century. While Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740 Commodore George Anson led a squadron of eight ships on a mission to disrupt or capture Spain's Pacific possessions. Returning to Britain in 1744 by way of China and thus completing a circumnavigation the voyage was notable for the capture of an Acapulco galleon but also horrific losses to disease with only 188 men of the original 1854 surviving. This London edition contains six engraved plates including a penguin and the "manner of catching the wild bull." This compilation has long occupied a distinguished position as a masterpiece of descriptive travel. Dean and Munday, hardcover
