‎"ELLIS, HENRY.‎

‎Reize naar de baai van Hudson, ter ontdekkinge van eenen Noord-wester doortogt, gedaan in de jaaren 1746. en 1747. - [SEARCH FOR THE NORTH-WEST PASSAGE]‎

‎Leiden, Elie Luzac jun., 1750. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Light wear to extremities, top of spine with small tear, otherwise a fine copy. XXXII, 440 pp. + 9 plates, primarily folded.‎

‎First (and only) Dutch edition of the description of the voyage of the ships Dobbs and California to Hudson Bay in Canada (1746-1747), where they finally proved the nonexistence of a North West passage from Hudson Bay. ""The first part contains a synopsis of twenty-three English voyages to discover the Northwest Passage, a history of the rise of the Hudson's Bay Company, and the discovery attempted from New England. The second part gives an account of a voyage under Captains Moor and Francis Smith, financed by private subscription, with Arthur Dobbs the leading subscriber. Ellis, also a subscriber, was hydrographer, surveyor, and mineralogist on the expedition, which proved, finally, the nonexistence of a Northwest Passage from Hudson Bay. The voyage led to a rapid decline of British interest in the search for a Northwest Passage, which was not revived until 1816. The work includes many valuable observations on tides, on the vagaries of the compass, and on the customs of the Eskimos, people then practically unknown"" (Hill – referring the the original English edition from 1749). ‎First edition of Forster's own account on the second of Cook's voyages where he became the naturalist. When Joseph Banks withdrew at the last moment as naturalist on Cook's second voyage, Forster and his son were appointed to fill the vacant position. In July 1772 they set sail on the Resolution, returning to England in July 1775. During a stop in Cape Town, Forster engaged Anders Sparrman to act as his assistant. Both the Forsters kept detailed diaries of everything they saw on the voyage, and made extensive collections of both natural history specimens and artifacts. On his return Forster published the offered work.""At the time of his death he was called the 'patriarch' of geography in Europe and was widely recognised as one of the most able naturalists. His influence on German science and scholarship was considerable. There was not one continent to which he did not devote some scholarly work."" (Captain Cook Society).Sabin, 25140.‎

‎Rapport fait à l'Academie des Sciences, le lundi 23 Avril 1821, sur le Voyage autour du Monde de la Corvette l'Uranie, commandée par M. de Freycinet.‎

‎(Paris, Crochard, 1821). No wrappers. In: ""Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago."", tome 16, Cahier 4. Pp. 337-445. (The entire issue offered). Rapport: pp. 389-427.‎

‎First printing of the official raport on captain Freycinet's voyage. He sailed from Toulon on 17 September 1817 in L'Uranie with his wife Rose who secreted herself aboard, and who wrote a separate account of the voyage. After refreshing at the Cape of Good Hope and Mauritius he landed at Shark Bay on 12 September 1818 where he set up an observatory, thoroughly surveyed the inlets and the coastal districts and removed the plate left by Willem de Vlamingh, which he had found and re-erected in 1801. He then sailed north to Timor. His accounts and description of the landscape and life and customs of that and other islands in the East Indies captivated the attention of people in Europe much more than his Australian reports, and a widespread interest developed in the expedition. Leaving Timor on 27 November he sailed via the Moluccas, the Carolines, the Marianas, and the Sandwich Islands and reached Port Jackson on 19 November 1819, the scientists on board adding constantly to their store of information on hydrography, botany, cartography and anthropology. After spending Christmas ashore, they sailed on 26 December and, falling in with the westerlies, set a course for Cape Horn.On 13 February 1820 L'Uranie was wrecked on the Falkland Islands" the scientific records and notes were saved before the vessel foundered, but 2500 of the 4175 plant specimens were lost. Freycinet returned to France in November 1820 and died on 18 August 1842.‎
