‎First edition, second issue, here in an interesting interim state with “Gödselen” on p. 26 (indicating the second issue) but with p. 25 misspelled as “52” not called for in neither first nor second issue. “Linnaeus’ research work during his mature years began with trips to various Swedish provinces. By order of the parliament, which wanted an inventory of all the natural resources of the country, during three summers in the 1740’s Linnaeus traveled through selected areas to describe them and to search for dyestuffs, minerals, clay, and other economically useful substances. His reports of these expeditions were published as Ölandska och gothländska resa (1745), Västgöta resa (1747), and Skånska resa (1751), all written in Swedish. Nothing escaped his attention on his travels on horseback—plants and insects, runic stones and other ancient remnants, farmers working in the fields and meadows, the changes in the weather. His prose style was simple and strong, sometimes rising to lyrical outbursts or spiced with effective similes.” (DSB) ""Baron C. Hårleman, who had borne the expenses of Linnaeus's expedition to Skåne, had the chance to see the proofs to at least the beginning of the SKÅNSKA RESA. There he read (on p. 26) with indignation that Linnaeus gave his blessing to the old Swedish custom of cleaning the ground by setting fire to the stubble (""svedjande"" - a practice that he himself had condemned in print). Linnaeus decided to have a new version printed in which the offended passage would be replaced by some innocuos observation on manure (""Gödselen""). A fold was therefore printed as part of the final sheet of the book with an article on ""Gödselen"" instead of the article on ""Svedjor"". The binder was supposed to cancel the fold with the article on ""Svedjor"" and replace it with the inner fold from the final sheet. In very few copies this was not done."" ‎Beschreibung des gantzen Welt-Kreises. Vierter Theil: Welcher in sich enthalt Das Alte und Neue Europa. (Vol. 4 out of a total of 5).‎

‎Franckfurt am Mayn, Zunner, 1685. 4to. In contemporary half calf. Traces from old paper-label to spine. Binding with considerable wear. Back board broken but still attached. Inner hinges split. Frontispiece partly detached. Previous owner's name in contemporary hand to spine. With a few occassional brownspots and tears in margin, but internally generally nice and clean. (8), 210, (14) pp. + 128 engraved plates and 1 frontispiece. (plates are numbered consecutively from 1 - 130. Plate no. 90 and 92 are missing, but collation corresponds to the digitalized copy in Regensburg, Staatliche Bibliothek, OCLC Accession No: 930342403 and the Otto Leopold Schmidt-copy, sold at Bonham in 2020).‎

‎First German translation (vol. 4 only) of Mallet’s lavishly illustrated ambitious guide to Europe, offering geographical and cultural knowledge to a broader audience in part because of the numerous and detailed engravings. Mallet's maps and illustrations are not only geographically informative but also a fine example of the baroque style of the period. It has been suggested that his background as a teacher led to him being concerned with entertaining his readers. This concern manifested itself in these charming illustrations which include maps, cityscapes, and depictions of various cultural practices and costumes. The first edition appeared in Paris in 1683 as ""Description de l'univers,"" and soon after the hundreds of copper plates for the illustrations were transferred to Jan David Zunner in Frankfurt, who published the first edition of the German translation in 1684, with German text engraved in the plates. He then published the second French edition in 1685, with the German text still in the plates. Alain Manesson Mallet (1630–1706) was a French cartographer and engineer primarily known for his significant contributions to cartography, particularly through the present work. He began his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV, eventually rising to the rank of Sergeant-Major in the artillery and serving as an Inspector of Fortifications. Mallet also served under the King of Portugal before returning to France where he was appointed to the court of Louis XIV. His expertise in military engineering and mathematics earned him a position teaching mathematics at the royal court. ‎"MICHAELIS, JOHANN DAVID. - ""THE 100 QUESTIONS"".‎

‎Fragen an eine Gesellschaft Gelehrter Männer, die auf Befehl Ihro Majestät des Königes von Dännemark nach Arabien reisen. - [THE HANDBOOK OF NIEBUHR'S ARABIA-EXPEDITION]‎

‎Frankfurt am Mayn, Garbe, 1762. 8vo. Very nice contemporary full mottled calf with five raised bands to richly gilt spine. Titlelabel with gilt lettering. A bit of wear to spine, causing slight loss of leather and a neat restoration to lower compartment. A paperlabel pasted on top of spine. Small loss of leather to back board. A stamp on title-page (Holstein=Holsteinborg). (70), 397 pp., 4 folded tables, paginated 391-97. Internally clean, some quires printed on thick paper.‎

‎The rare first edition of the founding work of Niebuhr's Arabia-expedition, which would gain world-wide fame and establish the scientific description of the Arabian peninsula. The present work consists in 100 questions, the answers to which constitute the purpose of the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition. In fact, the present work is the handbook of Niebuhr's travel to Arabia Felix, as its author is the spiritual father of it. The work is extraordinary in many ways, and it not only served as the basis for the Arabia-expedition, it also constitutes a forerunner of modern bible science that would begin to emerge a few decades later. Johann Davis Michaelis (1717-19) was a theologian and orientalist, whose fame today rests upon the present work and upon the fact that he was responsible for the first scientific expedition to Arabia Felix, namely that of Niebuhr. In 1753, he had come up with the idea for the the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition (1761-1767) and had gotten the Danish minister Bernstoff to agree to it. In 1760, when the expedition was becoming a reality, Michaelis recommended Niebuhr as a participant, and he outlined the entire purpose of the trip - namaly the list of 100 questions that he prepared and published for the members of the expedition, in order for them to answer in the course of the voyage. For all intents and purposes, Michaelis was the spiritual father of the Arabia-expedition. As a theologian and an orientalist, many of Michaelis' questions have root in the Bible. But unlike many other theolgians of the time, Michaelis sought to shed light over biblical themes through sources outside of the Bible - especially from the Middle East, not least Arabia. In this regard, his 100 Questions also came to be a precursor to the emergence of modern bible science.Although the expedition would have never taken place had it not been for Michaelis and his 100 questions - many of which are also purely naturalistic - he could not quite have foreseen the scientific outcome of the expedition. He had not foreseen that Niebuhr would become the founder of the scientific description of the Arabian peninsula and that Niebuhr's notes would become the basis for the first decipherment of Mesopotamian and Persian cuneiform. On the contrary, he was probably quite disappointed that his questions were not all answered as thoroughly as the had anticipated. Adding to that, Niebuhr's answer to the questions ""only"" takes up six pages in the preface to ""Description of Arabia"", although the text itself contains many detailed explanations and answers to Michaelis' questions.‎

‎A Narrative of A Tour of Observation, made during the Summer of 1817. By James Monroe, President of The United States, through The Nort-Eastern and North-Western Departments of the Union: with a View to The Examination of their several military Defenc... - [INVALUABLE ACCOUNTS OF THE EARLY YEARS OF THE UNITED STATES]‎

‎Philadelphia, S.A. Mitchell & H. Ames, 1818 + Philadelphia, Caleb Richardson, 1817. Small 8vo. Bound in one cont. hcalf. Raised bands. Gilt titlelabel in leather(this having some scratches). Monroe: 228,XXXVI pp. - Birkbeck: 189 pp.‎

‎First edition of President Monroe's highly important inspection-journey, which constitutes an immensely important historical document that provides invaluable insight into the early years of the United States, bound together with the very scarce first edition of Birkbeck's travels, which is considered ""One of the most interesting and instructive books that have appeared for many years."" (Sabin). Monroe’s “Narrative Tour…” constitutes a detailed account of his three month long journey, taking him as far west as Detroit. The official aim of the tour was to inspect the American defenses along the border with Canada, visiting military installations, reviewing troops, and confirming that the Rush-Bagot Pact with Britain to limit naval arms on the Great Lakes had been implemented. But Monroe had another just as powerful agenda, namely encountering the American population across the country and connecting with them. He wished to encourage the spirit of the population and through optimism secure the continued building of a strong country. This fascinating account provides detailed descriptions of the people Monroe met, the places he visited, and the events he attended. Although primarily focused on military matters and economic development (he visited many factories and mills to observe the state of American industry), Monroe’s accounts of interaction with the population (he also met up with Native American tribes) are just as interesting. “President Monroe visited the main cities along the Atlantic Seaboard as far as Portland, Maine, and from there he traveled through New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York. In Buffalo, New York, he boarded and early steamboat and voyaged down Lake Erie and the Detroit River to Detroit, the westernmost point of his trip. He spent five days in Detroit and Detroiters held parties, receptions, and balls in his honor. The President also visited Monroe, Michigan, which its citizens had recently named for him. The excitement and good feelings of his visit and the accounts that dignitaries and observers wrote about his visit helped erase the negative “interminable swamp” image that Easterners held of Michigan. After his Michigan visit President Monroe turned southeast and traveled back to Washington D.C. by way of Zanesville, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Fredericktown, Maryland. His trip took fifteen weeks and allowed him to meet more people than any other President of his time. He had such a positive impact on Americans that the Boston Columbian Centinel dubbed the eight years of his presidency “the Era of Good Feelings”.” Birbeck's ""Notes on a Journey in America..."" likewise constitutes a travelogue, written in 1818. It describes his journey from Virginia to Illinois, where he intended to establish a settlement for English emigrants. The work provides detailed descriptions of the landscape, climate, and people that Birbeck encountered along the way. Discussing also his observations on American society and politics and comparing it to England at the time, the work provides a unique perspective on early 19th-century America, as seen through the eyes of a European. The later editions have a map, which was not issues with the first edition, and the many later contemporary editions were printed outside The United States. The first edition, printed in the US, is very rare. Sabin: 50023 + 5569.‎

‎First edition of Nemeitz’s influential guide to how one should conduct oneself and make best use of one’s time and money in Paris: ""To travel pleasantly, one must spend generously. This is the means to be respected by everyone, to have entry everywhere, and to benefit greatly from the journey."" (Translated from the preface). It contain much interesting information on 17th and 18th century Parisian customs. Nemeitz obtained a position as a tutor in 1707 with the Swedish General Magnus Stenbock. In 1708 he accompanied the sons of the count to Lund University, where he temporarily lectured on statecraft and history. He participated in the Swedish-Danish War from 1712 onwards under Stenbock as a royal field secretary. In 1713, Stenbock sent him with his sons towards Western Europe, with their first major stop being in Utrecht, where they met several diplomats involved in the Peace of Utrecht. They also spent some time in Paris where they were introduced to Louis XIV on multiple occasions. Their journey also took them to England. After failing to secure further employment in the North, Nemeitz became a tutor for the Waldeck family, accompanying a young Count Waldeck to Strasbourg, Paris, and other European courts.A French translation was published in 1727.‎
