8vo [22 x 14.5 cm]; 2 volumes, 420; 453 pp, frontis in each volume, each volume with engraved vignette on title, half title in volume II, 10 maps and charts (folding), index. contemporary half red morocco, marbled boards, lightly rubbed, gilt spine title lettering, upper portion of margin of titles removed with loss of 'the', repair to map, else very good with only slight foxing on a few leaves. A picture of this book is avail Yakushi G57. Marshall 1343. The second edition was abridged from this first edition and had only two maps. The author was awarded the Royal Geographical Society gold medal for this journey and the mapping made. He was the first European to explore large parts of western China and Tibet, the book describes his travels in detail from Shanghai, Hong Kong up the Yangtze, through China and Tibet to Burma, the peoples, opium smoking, conditions, nature, cities, etc. The introduction by Yule adds a good historical perspective.

Publisher's advertisements on final two unpaginated pages. Former owner's name on half title: "A. Donaldson Smith 1898." This was possibly Dr. Arthur Donaldson Smith 1866-1939 an American doctor and explorer of parts of Africa. The author James Gilmour 1843-1891 was a Scottish Christian missionary who represented the London Missionary Society in China and Mongolia. This volume published after his death contains his journal entries from his first two years in China and Mongolia 1870-1871 as well as other reflections on life in Mongolia in the 1870s. In Very Good Condition: ends of spine and corners lightly rubbed; boards are slightly soiled; otherwise clean and solid. Religious Tract Society hardcover

La plupart de ces planches sont en aquatinte et on été dessinées par l'auteur. Quelques cartes. Un exemplaire à la BN de France, rien dans les catalogues français, ni anglais. La seconde édition française paraîtra en 1801. Reliure en pleine basane Lie de vin Restauration. Dos lisse avec fers romantiques en long, uniformement insolés. Plats estampés d'une grande plaque romantique à froid. Mors fendus. Institution Chapusot frappé en queue. Frottements. Ce voyage en Angleterre est l'oeuvre du peintre William Gilpin (1724-1804), qui s'attache tout particulièrement à la description des paysages anglais en les comparant à d'autres contrées européennes. Selon Larousse, il fut le premier qui ait parcouru l'Angleterre en véritable artiste, et qui donna une description exacte des sites pittoresques du pays. Gilpin an educator and writer on art "travelled widely in Britain with his notebook and sketching materials in order to identify locations which offered that particular kind of beauty in landscape 'which is agreeable in a picture'. Picturesque tourism constituted 'a new object of pursuit' as he wrote in the first of these books Observations on the River Wye 1782: the practice recommended was 'that of not merely describing; but of adapting the description of natural scenery to the principles of artificial landscape'.
