‎Édition originale très rare, illustrée d’1 carte hors texte. Brossard, Kerguelen le découvreur et ses îles, t. I, p. 582; Dunmore, t. I, p. 210 ; Du Rietz, Bibliotheca Polynesiana by Kroepelien, 641 ; Howgego, I, K12, p. 566 ; Ryckebusch, t. II, 4434, p. 111 ; Sabin, 37618 ; Sydney & Spence, Antarctic Miscellany, 650, p. 79. Manque à Chadenat, à Hill. L’ouvrage fut rapidement mis au pilon puisqu’il avait été interdit avant sa parution à cause de la dédicace «à la Patrie», et ne fut que très peu connu en dehors du cercle étroit des officiers de marine (Lapérouse avait emporté le livre de Kerguelen à son bord). « Ce volume est devenu très rare, le gouvernement en ayant fait saisir le plus grand nombre d’exemplaires» (Hoefer, t. XXVII, 611). Yves-Joseph Marie de Kerguelen (1734-1797), navigateur breton, officier de la marine du Roi, s'intéresse à ce qui est une des grandes préoccupations des milieux scientifiques et littéraires de son temps: l'existence d'un continent austral qu'on situait dans le Pacifique sud et dont Bouvet de Lozier avait cru apercevoir l'extrémité en 1739. Il partit en 1771 à la découverte de la Terre de Gonneville (en 1503, le capitaine de Gonneville naviguant vers le sud aurait trouvé une contrée paradisiaque au climat délicieux où des indigènes hospitaliers vivaient nus dans une abondance naturelle). Premier voyagede découverte : Le 1er mai 1771, du port breton de Lorient, Kerguelen mit à la voile pour l’Île de France. Le navire qui lui avait été attribué était le «Berryer» (nom d’un ancien ministre de la Marine et des Colonies), une corvette de 900 tonneaux de la Compagnie française des Indes, chargée de munitions pour la garnison de la colonie et de vivres, suffisantes pour alimenter 300 hommes d’équipage pendant une période de quatorze mois, temps estimé du voyage. À son bord se trouvait le savant astronome, l’abbé Alexis-Marie de Rochon, qui bientôt entra en conflit avec le capitaine trop autocratique à son goût. Quand le «Berryer» atteignit Port-Louis, le 20 août 1771, Rochon l’abandonna et chercha à joindre l’expédition rivale de Marion Dufresne et Crozet pour le Pacifique sud. Pierre Poivre, alors intendant de l’île, fit bon accueil à Kerguelen. Il offrit, à la demande de ce dernier, en remplacement du «Berryer», considéré comme «mauvais marcheur», une flûte et une gabare, plus légères et moins dispendieuses, la «Fortune» et le «Gros-Ventre», gabare de 16 canons, commandé par François Louis Alesno de Saint-Alloüarn (Saint Alloüarn était en mauvaise santé et pendant tout le voyage le «Gros-Ventre» fut commandé par Boisguehenneuc). Il était trop tôt pour naviguer au Sud, et Kerguelen fut requis d’étudier une nouvelle route vers l’Est qui avait était suggérée par un officier du nom de Jacques Raymond de Geron de Grenier, décédé avant d’avoir pu vérifier sa théorie. De retour à Port-Louis, après trois mois de navigation, la «Fortune» et le «Gros-Ventre», quittèrent l’Île de France le 16 janvier 1772 et firent cap plein Sud. Le 12 février, une terre est en vue. À l’aube du 13 février, les Français virent s’étendre les premières terres de la côte Ouest d’une couronne d’îles qu’ils nommèrent «la France Australe», auxquelles l’explorateur anglais James Cook donnera le nom «terre de Désolation » ou d’Îles Kerguelen lors de son troisième voyage. Était-ce là la terre paradisiaque de sieur Gonneville ou était-ce le continent austral si prometteur de richesses? Kerguelen décida d’envoyer une chaloupe, la «Mouche», afin de trouver un mouillage sûr pour le «Gros-Ventre». Ce fut un désastre. Malgré les courants violents, les Français (équipage du «Gros-Ventre») réussirent malgré tout à aborder sur le rivage et prirent possession de l’île (Kerguelen ne mit jamais pied à terre). Séparés par de très mauvaises conditions météorologiques, la «Fortune» rejetée au large par la tempête, Kerguelen décida le 16 février de retourner à l’Île de France, afin de rapporter sa découverte. Le 16 mars, il jetait l’encre à Port-Louis. La «Fortune» n’ayant point reparu, Saint Allouarn suivit ses instructions à la lettre et fit voile vers la Nouvelle-Hollande (Australie). Le «Gros-Ventre» atteignit le cap Leeuwin le 18 mars 1772. Saint Allouarn envoya Maingaud pour prendre possession de la bande côtière. Le 3 mai 1772, le «Gros-Ventre» arriva à Timor, le 18 juillet il mouillait à Batavia et le 5 septembre, il jetait l’encre à Port-Louis. Saint Allouarn, cet homme probe et modeste, scrupuleux et malade, perdit la vie peu de temps après son arrivée. Kerguelen, de retour en France, annonça pompeusement à Versailles qu’il avait découvert le continent austral. Louis XV le nomma capitaine de vaisseau et le fit chevalier de l’Ordre de Saint-Louis. Second voyagede colonisation - échec: Kerguelen repartit en mars 1773 avec l'«Oiseau» et le «Dauphin» pour une nouvelle mission d’exploration de la Terre australe, dont il releva environ 80 lieux de longueur de côtes, sans parvenir à déterminer si il s’agissait d’un archipel isolé ou de quelques îles prolongeant un continent allant jusqu’au pôle. Force de mauvais temps, il dut remonter vers le nord, fit une escale à Madagascar et rentra en septembre 1774 à Brest, où l’avenir s’annonçait sombre pour lui. Provenance prestigieuse: précieux exemplaire conservé dans sa reliure de l’époque et provenant de la Bibliothèque du Duc d’Aiguillon, secrétaire d’état des affaires étrangères (1771-1774) et secrétaire d’état de la guerre (1774), avec ex libris.‎

A well-preserved specimen with interesting provenance: originally in the library of the German diplomat Friedrich Werner von der Schulenburg (1875-1944), one of the conspirators against Hitler, it was later part of the library of the Soviet Foreign Office under Stalin (Schulenburg's handwritten ownership, dated 1918, and the stamp of the Soviet Foreign Office are on the title). From 1934 to 1941 Schulenburg served as German ambassador to the Soviet Union and was one of the principal architects of the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact. When the Wehrmacht invaded Russia in 1941, Schulenburg was recalled swiftly, having to leave his library behind. For his involvement in the tragically failed plot of 20 July 1944, Schulenburg was executed on November 10. - Original bookseller label of Simon Schropp, Berlin, pasted on title.
