When St James the Great was beheaded in Jerusalem in AD 61, he became the first apostle to be martyred for his faith. According to legend, his disciples brought the body in a miraculous stone boat to north-western Spain, where they buried it in a place now known as Santiago de Compostela. Following a claim in the early ninth century that the tomb had been rediscovered, people began flocking to the site to venerate the relics. Santiago became, after Rome and Jerusalem, the most important place of pilgrimage in medieval Christendom. Pilgrims from all over Europe broke away from their daily routine and set off along the 'Way of St James' through France and Spain to the remote town of Santiago. They travelled from hostel to hostel, visiting the churches and other holy places which lay on the route. Over the centuries a 'cultural highway' evolved, which has left an indelible mark on the artistic, religious and social map of Europe. In 1984, Brian Tate, Emeritus Professor of Spanish at the University of Nottingham, retraced the ancient journey of the pilgrims, accompanied by his son Marcus and the photographer Pablo Keller. The result is a remarkable visual record of some of the most beautiful landscapes in southern Europe and architectural treasures dating from the Romanesque to the present day. To complement Pablo Keller's photographs, Brian and Marcus Tate have written a book that explains the pilgrimage phenomenon and the history of the shrine, as well as providing a companion to the journey itself. Five maps show the route in detail. ' Hardbback the book is disbound well used brown leather board to front is detached some scuffing to background matching rear board still attached brown leather with blind stamped edge detail and double gilt line frame to edges no spine marbled endpapers closed page edges dusty on the whole the contents is very good some indication of foxing but basically very clean fold out illustration 402 pages the text covers the Fifth Book to the Eighth Book. This is followed by 'Notes and Illustrations' 64 pages. 8.75 x 5.5 inches approx. This is a book that would benefit from sympathetic restoration. The text appears to start at the year 1518 Preparations of Velasquez for invading New Spain rounding off in Book VIII with Trade Between New Spain and the Philippines 1564 etc. The book looks at the history of New Spain thus covering Peru Panama Guatemala Chile and other places in South America stretching to Mexico looking at tribes of Indians trade and changes. A book that could make up a set or it could be read on its own merits to gain an insight into the history of the period. A Heavy Book. . ‎London: T.F. Robey 1890. Very Good. 16 black-and-white collotype views loose as issued in a light green envelope. Title from envelope. "Robey's Series" -- on envelope and on each image. Thomas F. Robey was a photographer active in London beginning in the 1890s. From about 1894 to about 1905 he was also active as a commercial photographer and printer with Eustace Curzon. They were among many photographers producing platinotypes or platinum prints around the turn of the century. "Platinogram" was the name given by Robey to these images made from platinotypes. As listed on the envelope the views are: The Tower Bridge Tower of London London Bridge Royal Exchange St. Paul's West Front Embankment Houses of Parliament Westminster Abbey Rotten Row Piccadilly Circus Albert Hall Albert Memorial Crystal Palace Trafalgar Square Ludgate Circus and the Great Wheel. There is no date of publication but the images appear to be from the 1890s. The detail in the street scenes is particularly impressive. There are no motorized vehicles in any of the scenes. Oval stationers label on front of envelope: Rowsell & Son Cheapside. In Very Good Condition: minor creasing at a few corners; loss of corners on two images; clean and bright. Envelope is in Good- Condition: separated into two sections; chipping along edges; minor loss at corners. Extremely scarce -- no other copies of these "Platinogram" views have been located. T.F.
