The Society For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge London 1842. Early Edition. Map. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. No Date: Circa 1842 Engraved by J & C Walker. No Binding. Sheet Size: 34cm x 41cm. Hand coloured. Edition up to 1842 as Grahamland Enderby Land Sabrina land La Terre Adele Emerald Island and Balleny Island are shown. Ref: Tooley: 97. 0.5cm closed repaired tear with archival tape to lower left corner not affecting map. Slight age toning to sheet. In very good condition overall. Enderby land was discovered in February 1831 by John Biscoe on the Tula and named after Enderby Brothers of London owners of the Tula who encouraged their Captains to combine exploration with sealing. The beginning of the nineteenth century saw a period of rapid market growth and innovation in the map publishing world. Increased literacy and public interest in new frontiers and colonies overwhelmed the market because it was oriented toward the small affluent market of the previous century. With the intent to fill this void The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge SDUK was founded in 1828 in London by Lord Brougham and a group of men dedicated to the education of the aspiring working class and the Utilitarian ideal of 'Knowledge is Power.' The society produced an array of education materials but the series of maps was one of their most successful ventures. A number of engravers and printers were used to produce the maps which eventually exceed 200 sheets and continued to be published after the Society as a whole ceased to function. This map was produced to illustrate the latest discoveries in Antarctica including South Shetland Enderby Land Sabrina Land La Terre Adele and Balleny which are all delineated within the Antarctic Circle Quantity Available: 1. L’Araucana ( oublié par le Dictionnaire des Œuvres Laffont-Bompiani, qui n’en est pas à une lacune près) est un des grands poèmes épiques espagnols. Cervantès met l’œuvre d’Ercilla au dessus de celles du Tasse et de Camoëns. Voltaire a comparé la harangue du vieux Colocolo aux Araucaniens ( Chant II) à celle que Nestor adresse aux capitaines grecs et il conclut que celle d’Ercilla était infiniment supérieure à celle d’Homère! Ercilla né en 1530 à Bermeo fut un des conquérants de l’Araucanie. Il soutint contre ce peuple robuste et farouche une guerre longue et sanglante. Les Araucans ( habitants d’une contrée montagneuse du Chili) combattirent pour leur liberté avec une énergie admirable. L’armée espagnole perdit beaucoup d’hommes dans cette guerre qui n’avait d’autre but que d’ajouter quelques montagnes arides à la domination espagnole. Ercilla fut le chantre de cette conquête. Il employa ses rares loisirs à célébrer les événements dont il était le principal acteur. Faute de papier, il écrivit la première partie de son épopée sur des morceaux de cuir. L’original espagnol vit le jour à Salamanque en 1569. Ercilla est mort à Madrid vers 1603. Il fallut attendre 1824 pour avoir une traduction française. Le traducteur Gilbert de Merlhiac est une célébrité de Corrèze. Il naquit à Brive-la-Gaillarde en 1789 et fit carrière comme lieutenant de vaisseau. Sabin 22727.- Bel exemplaire de ce livre rare.
