GRAUSTEIN, Jeannette E.
Thomas Nuttall, Naturalist; Explorations in America 1808 -1841
8vo [24 x 16 cm]; xiv, 481 pp, frontis, illustrations including full-page, double-page maps, notes, index. original pictorial cloth, gilt spine title lettering, dj (slightly rubbed at corner, not price clipped), fine and clean, unmarked. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The first full-length biography of Nuttall, who traveled up the Missouri with the Astoria party which was heading across the country in 1811. He left the party to collect specimens for a perilous three months in hostile Indian country. In 1818 he journeyed alone in the Southwest for two years. In 1834 he traveled with Wyeth to the Pacific. Nuttall was acquainted with Daniel Boone, Richard Henry Dana (who mentions him in his 'Two Years Before the Mast', having traveled back around Cape Horn with him), Audubon and Emerson and made many important contributions to natural history knowledge, including ornithology and botany, and his travels in Arkansas are a classic travel narrative.

Gray, Elizabeth Caroline Hamilton (1800-1887). Scottish historian and travel writer.
THE DENSELY PENNED 2-PAGE CONCLUSION to an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED CAROLINE HAMILTON GRAY by the Scottish Historian and Travel Writer ELIZABETH CAROLINE GRAY.
19th Century. . Very good. - A densely penned 2-page conclusion to an autograph letter signed by Elizabeth Caroline Gray written on both sides of 10-5/8 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide onionskin paper. A difficult to read letter given her handwriting and the shadow of the words penned on the verso apparently written to a friend: ".but his very countenance spoke if not of genius within at least of love & charity without. I have visited both church & school since I saw you but have no time to tell about them. I some times think I must possess a talent for dawdling ___ ___ times that my daily cross is to see my time frittered away & nothing - nothing done." Signed "Caroline Hamilton Gray" followed by a 3 line postscript. Folded twice vertically the page is mounted to cream card stock with clear document tape along the left edge. The author's name is penned in another hand upon the tape and a portion of a clipped catalog listing of one of her books is also mounted on the tape. Very good.
The Scottish historian and travel writer Elizabeth Caroline Hamilton Gray 1800-1887 was born in Alva Clackmannanshire. An 1837 exhibit on the history of Estrucan artifacts organized by Domenico Campanari inspired her to pursue the subject. She traveled to Italy and published "Tour to the Sepulchres of Etruria" in 1840. She faced criticism for her gender as critics of the period thought women were unsuited to write about history. In addition to her research on Etruria she went on to write about the classical and early medieval church and empire as well as children's histories of Rome.
RARE. [19th Century]. unknown

This is the first English edition of Greely's account of an ill-fated and arduous Lady Franklin Bay Expedition in a period fine binding. In 1881 Lt. Adolphus W. Greely 1844-1935 led a 25-man U.S. Army expedition to the Arctic with the primary mission to create a scientific observation post at Lady Franklin Bay. His party became stranded en route and for two consecutive winters relief parties were unable to resupply his camp. A rescue ship did not arrive until 1884 and found Greely and 6 other men in starved condition. The others from the party had perished from starvation drowning hypothermia and even an execution Greely himself had ordered. His party had reached farther north than any previous expedition to the North Pole and completed extensive mapping of the then-mostly unknown northern parts of Greenland. Based chiefly on Greely's diaries the book documents the expeditions day after day struggles with polar ice sledge journeys camp life long trekking and the geography of the territory they explored. While the men returned home as heroes accusations of cannibalism soon followed; Greely denied any knowledge of such activities. A beautiful fine binding set. Other photos available. Inquiries welcome.

Richard Bentley & Son hardcover
