On July 4th 1900 in one of the great unheralded moments in exploration a young Japanese Zen monk named Kawaguchi Ekai crossed from Nepal to Tibet. He was already the first Japanese to haev visited Nepal; he now became the first to visit Tibet adn went on to reach the forbidden city of Lhasa-at a time when Tibet was closed to the outside world. He was determined to find the Tibetan translations of the Mahayana Buddhist scriptures but with only the vaguest idea of how to acieve his goal.
