HÜSEYIN BIN AHMET EL-ERZURUMÎ.
Hülâsa okçuluk ilminin kitabi.= Kitâbü'n fî-ilmi'n-Nüssâb. Prep. by Zafer Karakus.
New Turkish Paperback. Oblong large 8vo. (20 x 24 cm). In Turkish and original text in Mamluk-Kiptchak. 264 p., color ills. This book is a transcription of Kitâb fî 'ilm an-Nussab; a book on the knowledge of arrows or hulasa 'The essence', a late fourteenth century archery manual written in Mamluk-Kipchak and composed during the Mamluk reign in Egypt. This work is the earliest archery manual written in any Turkic language. Although many Arab historians have described the incredible feats of Turkish archers, our knowledge of their skills from Turkic sources written prior to the 14th century is limited to scanty and sporadic material collected from various glossaries and literary works.

ENGIN ÖZENDES.
Photography in the Ottoman Empire, 1839-1923.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English. 356 p. B/w and color ills. "Photography in the Ottoman Empire 1839-1923 provides an account of the history of photography in the Ottoman Empire between the years 1839-1923, an important though neglected field in the history of an early photography. The sultans of the Ottoman Empire traditionally shaped the arts of their day, and their enthusiastic reaction to the discovery of photography was to be crucial in the development of photography in the Empire. This third edition of the book published by YEM Publications has been updated and enlarged to incorporate new information gathered over the years and many new photographs that have been added to my archive. I have made sure that the revised text comprises the latest information available on the subject. Many nation states were created in the former Ottoman territories in Europe, Asia and Africa. I have not included the individual photographic histories of these countries but endeavoured to focus primarily on photography within the present boundaries of the Republic of Turkey. A list of photographers who worked in the Ottoman Empire has been provided to assist all those who are interested in the history of photography in Turkey and the Middle East. The names of photographers that I have come across in documents written in Ottoman Turkish script have been given as spelt. The first two editions treated the story of photography in the Ottoman Empire from the announcement of its discovery in 1839 up to 1919, but this new edition has been extended up to the year 1923 when the Turkish Republic was founded. Researching the history of photography is an unending task requiring a lifetime's dedication."

'IMÂD EL-DÎN MUHAMMED B. MUHAMMED B. HÂMÎD EL-KÂTIB AL-ISFAHÂNÎ, (1125-1202).
El-Bark el-Sâmî. [= Kitab al-Barq al-Shami]. Vol. 5. Abridged by Al-Bundârî. Published, prepared and introduction by Ramazan Sesen.
Fine Turkish Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). Reprint in Arabic; large introduction, and annotations in Turkish. [4], [xLvi], 236 p. El-Bark el-Sâmî. [= Kitab al-Barq al-Shami]. Abridged by Al-Bundârî. Published, prepared and introduction by Ramazan Sesen. Muhammad ibn Hamed Isfahan was a Persian historian, scholar, and rhetorician. He left a valuable anthology of Arabic poetry to accompany his many historical works and worked as a man of letters during the Zengid and Ayyubid period. He was born in Isfahan in the year 1125, and studied at the Nizamiyya school in Baghdad. He graduated into the bureaucracy, and held jurisdiction over Basra and Wasit. He then became a deputy of the vizier ibn Hubayra. After the death of ibn Hubayra, he went to Damascus in 1166 CE (562 Islamic Calendar) and entered the service of the qadi of Damascus, Kamal ad-Din. The qadi presented him to the Zengid Nur ad-Din, who appointed him a professor in the school he had established there, which then became known as the Imadiyya school in his honour. Nur ad-Din was later appointed to be his Chancellor. After the death of Nur ad-Din in 1174, Imad ad-Din was removed from all his bureaucratic duties, and was banished from the palace. He went to live in Mosul and later entered the service of Saladin, the Kurdish Sultan of Egypt during that time. When Saladin took control of Damascus, Saladin's vizier, al-Qadi al-Fadil, appointed him chancellor, and he also became al-Fadil's deputy. Saladin had been unsure of his talent because he was only a scribe, Imad ad-Din soon became one of the sultan's favourites. As chancellor he did not have to perform the everyday duties of the chancery scribes, and he had a lot of leisure time in Egypt. From then on he accompanied Saladin on all his campaigns. After a certain raid, he was chosen to kill one of the prisoners, but the prisoner was a child and was instead exchanged for a Muslim prisoner held by the Crusaders. Imad ad-Din was present at the Battle of Marj Uyun, the Battle of Hattin, and the subsequent campaign to expel the Crusaders from the Holy Land. At Acre, he criticized Saladin for giving away the city's treasure instead of spending it on the reconquest. At Beirut, he became ill, but was the only scribe capable of writing the terms of surrender. He had recuperated in time to see the aftermath of the Siege of Jerusalem (1187), where he again criticized Saladin's generosity; he was also disgusted by those in charge of the ransom who took bribes, and the rich Crusader nobles who took their treasures with them rather than ransoming the poor. He was present at Acre again during the Third Crusade when the Christians retook the city of Acre, and was among those who fled after the defeat. After Saladin's death in 1193, he began writing his biographies of the sultan. He wrote the Kitab al-Barq al-Shami, which is lost, but was abridged by al-Bundari. This study contains just 5th volume of manuscript abridged by Al-Bundârî.

Memlükler, (1250-1517).
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In Turkish. 218 p. Memlükler, (1250-1517). A comprehensive study on Mamluks. This work deals with Mamluks, which was one of the largest Muslim-Turkish states in history, protected the western part of Islamic geography from Mongol invasion, and eliminated the Crusader states in Syrian region. Book points out the distinguishing features of Mamluk state such as inexistence of stable dynasty system in it and having a strong cavalry founded in accordance with Mamluk system that defeated the Mongols. The direct influences of the organizations and institutions established by Mamluks, particularly the ones in the scholarly fields, on Ottoman Empire, and the Ottomans' consideration of the Mamluks for a long time as "high authority" are among the subjects of this book. Despite the aforementioned features of the Mamluk state, it has not received the attention it deserves in our country. To increase the level of recognition of the Mamluks in Turkey and encourage the researchers who work in this field are among the main objectives of this study.TURKOLOGY History of Turks Islam Middle East Egypt.

MUHAMMED E. KUTLUOGLU.
The Egyptian question, 1831-1841. The expansionist policy of Mehmed Ali Pasa in Syria and Asia Minor and the reaction of the Sublime Porte. Edit: Halil Inalcik, Kemal Beydilli, Nejat Göyünç.
As New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. 272 p., 16 plates. Mint. The present study seeks to explore the Egyptian question, between 1831 and 1841, and to focus upon the struggle between Muhammad Ali Pasha and the Sultan. To this extent, it approaches the Egyptian question as an internal Ottoman problem, rather than as an international issue. The choice of opening and closing dates seems obvious enough. Despite a steadily deteriorating relationship after he battle of Navarino in October 1827, it was not until 1831 that open hostilities broke out between Muhammad Ali Pasha and the Sublime Porte. Though these hostilities anded in a settlement in 1833, the underlying struggle between Istanbul and Cario went on until 1841, when it was ended by the European Powers interference. The presents study focuses primarily upon Anatolia and Syria. Altough Muhammad Ali Pasha expanded his sphere of influence towards the Persian Gulf and the Arabian peninsula, it was above all Syria and Anatolia which served as the theater for his struggle with the Sublime Power.
