HARDCOVER bound in contemporary half calf and pebbled cloth spine richly decorated in gilt cloth inner hinges red ribbon signet; scattered foxing corners rubbed bumped. In about fine condition. Some leaves still unopened. A very handsome copy. ~ FIRST EDITION. This copy is or was intended to be a Presentation Copy from the Author to Maréchal Comte Randon Marshall of France. With an autograph letter handwritten in ink in a very neat hand by Gerlach signed by himself dated March 2 1860 addressed to the Maréchal. It comprises a large leaf folded into a four-page document last page blank with 47 lines of text date and signature. "I request Your Excellency to be willing to accept this copy of the Military annals of the Dutch East-Indies" it opens written in French. Expressing his appreciation to Randon's military achievements he begs that the book will be presented to His Majesty the Emperor of the French continuing "Voilà monsieur le Maréchal ce qui me porte à vous offrir ce travail et à vous prier d'être mon interprète auprès de l'Auguste chef du peuple français pour que Sa Majesté daigne accepter un exemplaire de mon livre." The letter is in exceptionally fine condition though a bit foxed. Jacques Louis César Alexandre Maréchal Comte Randon 1795-1871. The author Abraham Jean Arnaud Gerlach was born in 1811 in Groningen. He received his education at the Koninklijke Militaire Academie graduating as Lieutenant of the Artillery. As Colonel he later had a long teaching career at the same academy and contributed regularly to military studies and publications. He translated his "Fastes militaires des Indes" into Dutch and published it in Zalt-Bommel and Paris in 1874-75 as the three-volume set "Neerlands heldenfeiten in Oost-Indië". He died in 1906. The importance of this work is remarkable: OCLC lists no less than 20 major North American libraries who keep a copy including Johns Hopkins Harvard Washington Princeton and Columbia university libraries as well as NYPL. A very good example of this unrecorded multi page print. An unusual set of instructions to the local magistrates on how to structure their tax accounting reports since audits by the court accountants have found many mistakes. In addition to the detailed 5 page instructions there are 8 pages (plus 3 integral blanks) of spreadsheet which show preprinted columns for Revenue and Expenditures. It is obvious that the court accountants did not expect any deficits as the instructions clearly expect a positive tax remittance to be made at the end of every quarter. Rare. Splendido esemplare, in coloritura coeva, della carta della Russia di Hessel Gerritz, con un largo cartiglio di Mosca e la pianta di Archangelsckagoroda.Esemplare nel terzo stato, pubblicato da Joannes Blaeu ad Amsterdam, intorno al 1660 circa.Questo raffinata e rara mappa è stato compilato sulla base dei manoscritti di Isaac Massa riportati dalla Russia, al quale si dice sia da attribuire che il grande inserto con Mosca. La mappa è stata pubblicata per la prima volta da Hessel Gerritsz nel 1613. Blaeu la pubblicò dopo aver acquisito la lastra dopo la morte di Gerritsz, avvenuta nel 1632. Questa edizione del Blaeu, ha il testo in lingua olandese al verso. La mappa ha molte caratteristiche interessanti e decorative, tra cui: un piano dettagliato di Mosca, con una legenda di diciassette lettere di edifici pubblici e chiese di rilievo; una rosa dei venti e un galeone nel Mar Caspio; una piccola veduta del porto settentrionale di Arcangelo; tre uomini russi in costume tipico e un bel cartiglio per titolo e dedica.La mappa è di grande importanza nella storia della Russia. Come espresso nel cartiglio, il progetto è stato ideato personalmente dallo Zar di Russia Feodor II Godunov (1589-1605), quando era solo adolescente. Feodor, figlio dello zar Boris Godunov, era un giovane sovrano, molto intelligente e promettente, noto per la sua raffinata educazione. This fine map was compiled from manuscripts brought back from Russia, by Isaac Massa to whom the large inset plan of Moscow is said to be attributed. The map was first issued by Hessel Gerritsz in 1613. Blaeu published it after acquiring the plate after Gerritsz’s death in 1632. This edition has Dutch text on the verso. This superb map has many interesting and decorative features, including; a detailed inset plan of Moscow, complete with a seventeen letter key of prominent public buildings and churches; a compass rose and a galleon in the Caspian Sea; a small inset view of the northerly port of Archangel; three Russian men in local dress and a magnificent map title and dedication. The map has a very important place in the history of Russia. As mentioned in the cartouche, the draft was made personally by the Czar of Russia Feodor II Godunov (1589 – 1605), while he was only in his mid-teens. Feodor, a son of Czar Boris Godunov, was a highly intelligent and promising young ruler of Russia, known for his fine education.
