MURDER AT THE FLEA CLUB
N.Y.: Simon 1955. 1st edition. Pages are age toned light wear else about fine in ldust jacket ightly chipped at head and foot small piece out at rear and soiled at rear not price clipped $2.75 price is still intact Dr. Mary Finney in Paris. Catoluge Of Crime #1112. Matthew Head is the pseudonym of John Edwin Canaday 1907-1985 an art critic and writer. Canaday was a New York Times art critic for seventeen years and later in life he wrote restaurant reviews for the Times. Paris at the height of its post-War chic is a far cry from the African backwaters that Hoop Taliaferro has been calling home. But with his American charm and American dollars he fits in anywhere. He especially fits in at the Flea Club a naughty nightclub for people who have pretty tame ideas of naughty. The real draw is Nicole a third-rate chanteuse singing sad songs for the bored expats holding up the bar. When someone silences the music it falls to Hoop to put things right. Sleuthings not really Hoops line. He runs more to clever quips and nicely ironed khakis. But he is saved once again by the timely arrival of the redoubtable Dr. Mary Finney. Stomping through the City of Light in her sensible shoes Mary is everything Nicole wasnt -- including one step ahead of her killer. . 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. Book. Head, Victor
Hereward
Stroud United Kingdom: Alan Sutton Publishing 1995. Book has 182 pages with illustrations. In the year 1070 four years after the Battle of Hastings Saxon England lay prostrate under the heel of William the Conqueror. In the enveloping gloom of Norman oppression only one last centre of resistance remained - the Isle of Ely in the Fens of East Anglia. From this refuge emerged a leader destined to struggle against enormous odds in his defiance of Norman attacks; a man whose achievements cast him in the heroic mould yet whose very existence remains a mystery. Much has been written about Hereward as a character of fiction or myth but few attempts have been made to delve beneath the legend and discover why an apparently obscure Saxon thane became the embodiment of resistance to the Norman invader. This book attempts to fill the gaps and brings Hereward out of shadowy legend into the light of reality. It presents the evidence in a clear and concise manner discusses the various versions and interpretations of his story and explains the enduring fascination that made Hereward the progenitor of Robin Hood and a figure of significance to literature and folklore. The tale of Hereward and his descendants is woven so firmly into the story of England that it brings together characters as disparate as the Conqueror himself Lady Godiva the Black Prince and the Fair Maid of Kent. Intriguingly one genealogist carries the Hereward story across the Atlantic to Massachusetts where a supposed descendant John Harvard of Southwark settled in the seventeenth century and there founded Harvard University. . First Edition. Hard Cover/Boards. Near Fine/Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Alan Sutton Publishing hardcover

Healey Robin ed
Hopeful Travellers: Italian Explorers Missionaries Merchants and Adventurers from the Middle Ages to Modern Times an Exhibition in the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library University of Toronto 30 January - 27 April 2007
Toronto: Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library University of Toronto 2007 Book. Near Fine. Original Wraps. 1st Canadian Edition. Catalogue of an exhibition of books and maps at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library University of Toronto January 30 to April 27 2007. This exhibition is about travellers and the exhibits are for the most part accounts of their travels. There are few restrictions: the journeys will be to anywhere in the world at any time from the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries. Some of the books and maps were published as recently as this century others were first printed in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The travellers' tales were most often written down by the travellers themselves or perhaps dictated to amanuenses soon after their return. Not all are truthful though most claim to be. One restriction is self-evident: for the journeys to have been recorded at all they must have been at least partly successful. The second restriction is more interesting: each of the explorers and cartographers is Italian and they are all men - for the cultures of the times even into the twentieth century excluded Italian women from such ventures. But these were Italians who though living at the centre of the Mediterranean region with opportunities for trade profit and God's work close by on every side chose to cross the deserts the oceans and the mountains. Suffice to say that they did and the world was changed and they were rewarded. 152p. illustrations include 12 fold-out colour reproductions bibliography.
