Schilderen is het medium dat consequent zijn voorkeur geniet. <br>Op het eerste zicht lijken zijn doeken een kluwen van figuren en objecten. Op het tweede zicht ontdekt men echter een ordening waarin die mensen en objecten, samen met wolken, lucht en water hun plaats krijgen om een verhaal te vertellen. <br>Er bestaat zoiets als een Ysbrant-universum, een wereld waarin veel gekeken, veel gedacht en weinig gepraat wordt. Hoe ziet die beeldenwereld eruit? De beelden komen voort uit allerlei belevenissen, dingen die de kunstenaar mooi, beklemmend of belangrijk vindt, een 'stream of consciousness' waar de kijker deel aan kan nemen, zonder ooit te weten waar het precies om gaat, want dat wil Ysbrant absoluut niet kwijt. Hij legt die 'stream' in zijn universum expressief neer met verf, met oog voor het geheel maar ook voor het detail. Want dat is een van de sterkhouders in zijn werk: de subtiele combinatie tussen het doek an sich, als een abstraherend samenspel van vlakken, kleuren en lijnen, en de vele kleine figuratieve elementen die er in opduiken, die duidelijk met het geheel te maken hebben, maar niet willen verteld of verklaard worden.

De nieuwe Havana-reeks die Vekemans schildert, is een vervolg op de Kinshasa-Congo-reeks waaraan de Antwerpse kunstenaar werkte tussen 2006 en 2007. Die serie brengt indringende portretten van gewone mensen die Vekemans in de straten van de Congolese hoofdstad ontmoette. Gefascineerd door de link tussen de Congo-cultuur en de Afro-Cubaanse traditie trok Vekemans eind 2007 voor het eerst naar Havana om daar opnieuw gewone Cubanen te fotograferen en te schilderen. Met de retrospectieve in het Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes krijgt de 58-jarige Vekemans eindelijk de internationale erkenning die hij verdient.

The outdoor festivities in honor of the city?s new governor included a citywide procession, performances, fireworks, music, and political speeches. Along the processional route appeared nine richly ornamented stages and arches designed by Peter Paul Rubens and executed by a group of local painters and sculptors, including Jacob Jordaens, Theodoor van Thulden, and Jan van den Hoecke. To commemorate the event, the city commissioned a lavish festival book, entitled the Pompa Introitus Ferdinandi (1641), which contains learned commentaries by Jan Gaspar Gevaerts, a city official and Latinist, as well as folio engravings by Theodoor van Thulden after Rubens's stages. More than a simple description of the event, Gevaerts? volume offers a rich compilation of references to ancient writers and reproductions of ancient coins.While most literature on the subject has focused on Rubens?s nine monumental arches and his twelve preparatory oil sketches for the designs, this volume will examine the entry and its accompanying festival book as a whole. Whilst the majority of his other works were commissioned, the landscapes seem to have been painted for his own pleasure and delight and stayed in the artist?s possession until his death. Most of them were painted in the last decade of his life; a happy period, in which Rubens retired from public duties and spent most of his free time studying the antique and enjoying sojourns on his country estate, castle Het Steen. Niet alleen de stroom zelf maar ook het leven op en rond het water en in de Antwerpse haven werd talloze malen in beeld gebracht.
