‎Kryn Taconis - Photojournalist / Photojournaliste‎

‎viii, 146 pages. Text in English and French. Profusely illustrated with glossy black and white reproductions of photos. "Dutch-born Kryn Taconis has left us as his legacy a body of work that stretches over thirty-five years - from 1944 to 1979. As a member of the Resistance, he cast a special light upon the grave privation of the people of Amsterdam, who were starved by the German occupiers during the winter of 1944-1945. He was later associated with the Magnum agency for ten years during which he proved himself as an independent photographer and displayed his sympathies and his humanist affinities in numerous stories from all over the world. Finally, his twenty years of association with Canadian illustrated magazines such as the Star Weekly gave him the occasion to wield great influence in establishing new standards of quality in Canadian photojournalism." - Preface. ‎Belgium in the Ottoman capital: From early steps to 'la Belle Epoque'. The centenary of 'Le Palais de Belgique', 1900-2000.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 95 p., color and b/w ills. Belgium in the Ottoman capital: From early steps to 'la Belle Epoque'. The centenary of 'Le Palais de Belgique', 1900-2000. This book has been published to mark the centenary of Le Palais de Belgique Legation in Constantinople, now known as Istanbul. It begins with an account of the first diplomatic and commercial contacts between Belgium and the Ottoman Empire, which were initiated within a year after the new Belgian State achieved independence in 1830. It then goes on to describe in detail the experience of the various Belgian diplomats, businessmen, industrialists and travellers who came to Constantinople in the remaining years of the nineteenth century, during which time they played distinctive roles in the social life of the city as well as contributing significantly to the modernisation of the old Ottoman capital. The latter part of the book describes the acquisition and renovation of the building that came to be known as Le Palais de Belgique. This monograph is a valuable and unique addition to the bibliography of Istanbul studies, particularly concerning the participation of Belgians in the life of the city during the latter years of the Ottoman Empire.‎

‎MARC ARYAN [HENRI MARKARIAN], (French-Belgian singer, songwriter, and record producer of Armenian descent), (1926-1985).‎

‎Original print photograph signed and inscribed 'Marc Aryan'.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Original b/w portrait print photograph signed and inscribed by Marc Aryan as 'Gönül'e'. 15x10,5 cm. Henri Markarian, better known as Marc Aryan, was a French-Belgian singer, songwriter, and record producer of Armenian descent born as a French citizen, who also acquired Belgian citizenship after a long residency in the country. Marc Aryan was born to Lebanese Armenian parents who came from Malatya, Turkey. Henri Markarian initially released materials under the personal label Markal. He then changed the name of the label to Malatya where his parents came from. He recorded several songs for an album released in Brussels. With initial success, Henri Markarian decided to adopt the stage name Marc Aryan (derived from the pronunciation of his Armenian family name Markarian). After the successful years 1964 and 1965 locally, the years 1966 and 1969 proved to be his most prosperous years internationally. Marc Aryan enjoyed great popularity in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon and Syria, where he also sang some songs in the Armenian language and in Eastern Europe and Latin America. He had some commercial success in Quebec, Canada's predominantly francophone province. Marc Aryan visited Turkey where his parents originated from. His success was huge after his release of the oriental-themed "Istanbul", one of his best-known hits that became an instant classic in Turkey. He also released a number of re-arrangements of his biggest hits in the Turkish language, following the example of famous European artists who had done the same as Salvatore Adamo, Johnny Hallyday, Sacha Distel, Enrico Macias, and Peppino di Capri. Turkish language versions in his album Istanbul'da include 9 songs including "Yalancisin", "Dünya Dönüyor", "Kalbin Yok Mu?" and others. The Turkish lyrics were mostly written by Fecri Ebcioglu.‎

‎Ottoman Istanbul in flames: City conflagrations, governance and society in the early modern period.‎

‎New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 174 p. Ottoman Istanbul in flames: City conflagrations, governance and society in the early modern period. Fires are significant to study due to the immense change they brought to urban life which make it possible to trace the policies, approaches, and regulations of the city rulers. When it comes to fires in the 18th century Istanbul, the Ottoman Empire's responsibility to return the city to pre-fire conditions, and bring normalcy to city life played a crucial role. This study is an inquiry into the Ottomans' perception of fires and urban regulations. Analyzing official sources, such as court records and archival sources, this study aims to understand the Ottomans' role and mindset toward the city reconstruction after fires. Also, by cross-checking official with non-official sources, i.e. traveler accounts, the reports of diplomats (official, non-Ottoman records), drawings and secondary sources, this study provides a broader picture on the manner in which the Ottomans dealt with the outcome of fires in the capital.‎
