The introduction is by José Maria da Silva Paranhos Visconde do Rio Branco 1819–1880 who was the president of the Conselho de Ministros for Emperor Pedro II from 1871 to 1875 - a time when the Brazilian Empire was at its height. One of the Visconde's major reforms was imposing a protective 40% tariff on imported goods in order to stimulate Brazilian industry. Pages 5-17 are the Visconde's explanation of which goods the tariff applies to. The specific items indexed in the final 43 pp. range from rosaries and wicks to iron bars alabaster carpets and beans. KVK cites the same 1857 work as well as one dated 1855 in the North German Union Catalogue. Hollis lists a work with the same title in 8º format printed in Rio de Janeiro 1860. Not located in Orbis. Generally excellent.<br /></p><p>A rare series of three consecutively printed dissertations 2 of them illustrated on the flora of Brazil diligently recorded in standard Linnaean form by Carl Thunberg Linnaeus' foremost disciple and the greatest botanical explorer and collector of his day. The specimens were collected by Georg Wilhelm Freyreiss in his travels to Minas Gerais Brazil in 1814-15. Only eight species out of the thirty described by Thunberg in these booklets had been studied until recently Moraes Smedt and Hjertson. Most of the specimens can still be found today at Uppsala University.</p><p>Although the dissertations are separately signed by Billberg Ahlberg and Holm Reyment notes that the work in each case was Thunberg's since it was customary for the professor to write the thesis which his students would then defend in public. Each dissertation is in the form of a scientific description of 10 different species of which several appear to be named and described for the first time: for example Billberg's thesis notes two <i>Lobelia</i> one <i>Begonia</i> and one <i>Euphorbia</i>; Ahlberg'sseveral orchids <i>Epidendrum Cymbidium</i> sp. nightshades <i>Solanum</i> sp. and a type of wild basil <i>Ocymum</i>; and Holm's a species of bromeliad <i>Billbergia speciosa</i>. Two of the theses are illustrated with detailed depictions of the specimens involved on large folding engravings.</p><p>Carl Peter Thunberg 1743-1828 rector of the University of Uppsala earned the epithets "father of South African botany" and "the Japanese Linnaeus." Of the disciples whom Linnaeus sent off on far-flung collecting journeys Thunberg traveled the furthest reaching South Africa Indonesia Japan where in order to be admitted he had to pass himself off as a Dutch Protestant merchant and Sri Lanka. Thunberg is cited in naming some 254 species of plants and animals though significantly more plants than animals and authoring more than 160 monographs and scientific papers.</p><p>OCLC: 3 parts together at NYPL U. A two-volume history of the Japanese in Brazil by a one-time California resident who helped open Brazil for the Japanese. The first Japanese immigrants settled in Brazil in 1908 not coincidentally the year after the Gentleman's Agreement restricted immigration to the United States. The new arrivals mostly pursued coffee cultivation around Sao Paulo.<br/> <br/> The first volume covers the diplomatic agreements and legal framework for Japanese immigrants in Brazil. The second volume describes the various colonies established successful businesses and offers biographies of some pioneers. These volumes were published to coincide with the 2600th anniversary of Japan a milestone used to stoke the flames of nationalism in the early 1940s. These books were reprinted in the 1950s when Japanese immigration to Brazil boomed again and then again in the 1990s.<br/> <br/> Aoyagi was a major proponent of Japanese emigration and for the establishment of colonies in the Americas. He arrived in California in the 1890s was the first Japanese to visit Peru and then led the push for agricultural colonies in Brazil negotiating the agreements to allow settlements and agricultural exports. Aoyagi was also instrumental in negotiating for Japanese government funds to buy land in Brazil for immigrant farmers. Les plantations de café couvrent environ 27000km2 de terrain, principalement dans les États du sud (Minas Gerais, São Paulo et Paraná) où l'environnement et le climat offrent des conditions de croissance idéales. Le café est arrivé au Brésil au XVIIIesiècle et le pays est devenu le premier producteur dans les années 1840. L'apogée de la production brésilienne se situe dans les années 1920 quand le pays fournissait 80% du café du monde. Bon état de conservation.‎
