Gardiner John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith.
LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF 1919-1942.
Regina Saskatchewan: University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center 2004. 197 pp 8vo 9" H. B&w photographs. "John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James 'Jimmy' Gardiner the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1940 received his Wings in October 1941 and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18 1942 on the eve of the Dieppe Raid Edwin wrote to his father: 'At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will read all about in the papers long before you get this letter'. Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner who had lost two brothers in the First World War had now lost his son to war. His wife Violet found the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944 yet another casualty of war. Gardiner kept all of Edwin's letters to the family. He investigated the circumstances of his son's death visiting the graveyard at St. Aubin Le Cauf on several occasions and writing a thorough record of his findings. To the end of his life he maintained contact with the family of the Canadian pilot who died at the same time as Edwin and with the French family who cared for their graves. John Edwin Gardiner's voice in 'Letters Home' is engaging humorous and intelligent. Like so many others of his generation he exudes confidence and optimism despite the dangers of his situation. Perhaps most striking and most touching however is the genuine family affection that pervades these letters." . Soft Cover. Near Fine. University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center Paperback

TRENTON: 50 YEARS OF AIR FORCE.
CFB Trenton 50th Anniversary Committee Trenton Ontario 1981. 160 pp oblong 8vo 8 5/8" H x 10 1/2" D hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "Ever since it was officially opened in 1931 the base of Trenton Ontario has been the most important military airfield in Canada. It began as a flying training base and in the early war years was responsible for training flight instructors who in turn helped to train the thousands of pilots in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war the base remained the home of Central Flying School and pilot training continued to be the primary activity. Post war expansion of commercial air traffic to and from Toronto gradually began to interfere with the freedom of movement of the trainers and in 1961CFS was moved to the open skies of the prairies and Trenton became the home of Air Transport Command. Throughout its 50 year history many thousands of airmen and airwomen have lived and worked here. Countless thousands more have passed through either on course or as air transport passengers. It is hoped that this book will be of interest to everyone who has been here by providing information about what happened here before or since their particular time at Trenton and by offering a nostalgic look at some of the people planes and places of their era." THERE SHALL BE WINGS: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE.
Toronto: Clarke Irwin 1959. 290 pp large 8vo 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Leslie Roberts begins his history of the RCAF with an account of the first flight in Canada on Baddeck Bay in 1909. Five and one-half years later the first World War broke out and he records the exploits in that conflict of the Canadians who took to the air in such numbers that in 1918 they constituted more than fifty percent of the flying personnel of the RAF. He describes the protracted and painful birth of the RCAF its struggles for survival during its early days when to justify its existence a succession of economy-minded governments assigned it such employment as flying fire-spotting patrols carrying out search-and-rescue and mercy missions in the North timber cruising for the provinces and photography and mapping tasks in the high Arctic. When a second World War broke out these airmen passed on their accumulated knowledge and experience to the young Canadians who with their colleagues from the other Commonwealth countries met and turned back the challenge of Hitler's Luftwaffe and shattered the wall of his European Fortress. Roberts includes an account of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan; of the RCAF 's participation in the Korean conflict; its contribution to NATO and the United Nations Emergency Force; and its present status as guardian of Canada's three shorelines and our first line of defence. An excellent record of flight in Canada and of the dedicated service of the RCAF to its country in the cause of freedom." ISBN 0861241377 "The B-29 was a larger and more devastating weapon than even its predecessor and namesake the B-17 Flying Fortress. Developed during World War II by Boeing this American superbo mber could carry a much heavier load and fly over greater distances than any aircraft then in existence. This feature became particularly important during the Pacific War when American aircraft had to fly well over a thousand miles and ba c k t o d e v astate the Home Islands of Japan. The apotheosis of the Superfortress came when it was chosen to carry the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. In later versions it was used by the Americans during the K or ea n W ar wi th g reat effect. The technical changes and use of this massive bomber is told brilliantly by John Pimlott of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The book is largely based on the diaries of Lord David Douglas-Hamiton the author's uncle who was sent out to Malta as a Spitfire Squadron Leader at a ti me wh en t he i sl and was sustaining heavier bombing than London at the height of the Blitz and the Axis forces were preparing for invasion. The author's scrupulous research combined with his uncle's uniquely authoritative viewpoint vivid ly rec r eat es the pe rio d the comradeship and the grimness of life on the beleaguered island. The air battle which was the second largest of the entire war involved some of the most famous fighter aces of World War II including 'Screwball' Beu rlin g and Lad die Luca s. The y all played a vital part in what proved to be one of the greatest defensive and strategic operations of all time and their exploits along with those of many others are recorded here a reminder of their indomit able spir it in the face of a ppa llin g odds." Pimlott John.
B-29 SUPERFORTRESS.
Bison Greenwich CT 1983 reprint. 64 pp 4to 11" H soft cover. ISBN 0861241371 "The B-29 was a larger and more devastating weapon than even its predecessor and namesake the B-17 Flying Fortress. Developed during World War II by Boeing this American superbomber could carry a much heavier load and fly over greater distances than any aircraft then in existence. This feature became particularly important during the Pacific War when American aircraft had to fly well over a thousand miles and back to devastate the Home Isl ands of Japan. The apotheosis of the Superfortress came when it was chosen to carry the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. In later versions it was used by the Americans during the Korean War with great effec t . T h e t echnical changes and use of this massive bomber is told brilliantly by John Pimlott of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Richly illustrated with color and monochrome photographs as well as color sideviews and a full color cutaway dr aw n b y Mi k e Badrocke this book will be a valuable addition to the libary of aviation enthusiasts." BIG FRIEND LITTLE FRIEND: MEMOIRS OF A WORLD WAR II FIGHTER PILOT.
Doubleday Garden City New York 1969. 176 pp 8vo 8 7/16" H hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs portraits. "Richard Turner was a student in college when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. As a youngster he had devoured the magazines and books that told of the exploits an d adventures of the flying aces of World War I. When he came of age he took flying lessons so that when war came he was welcomed into the Army Air Corps. The metamorphosis of this young college student into a crack fighter pilot is the s u b j e c t o f this fast-moving memoir. The reader flies with Richard Turner into the largest sustained aerial conflict ever witnessed in history; past barrage balloons unmanned missiles and enemy fighters on hair-raising missions ranging from t he e sc or t o f he avy bombers Big Friends to accompanying the Supreme Allied Commander on his historic personal reconnaissance of the front lines the first time that a ground general had personally reconnoitered battle terrain in the prese nce of th e e nem y. Lt . C ol. Turner's memoirs also relate the rise to prominence of the Pioneer Mustang Group Little Friends as it aided the Eighth Air Force's heavy bombardment missions. And finally his very personal book shows how a youn g ge nera tion end eavo red to gras p and emulate the traditions of determination and courage of the preceding generation fulfilling its duty in the proud privilege of serving." THE LUFTWAFFE IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
Shepperton: Ian Allan 1998. 128 pp 4to 11 3/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The Battle of Britain has always been seen as one of the major turning points of the war: the might of the Luftwaffe devastator of half of Europe turned towards the beleaguered British Isles to stamp out the RAF and prepare the way for Operation Sea Lion - the first proper invasion of Great Britain since 1066. The author has produced a fascinating collection of eyewitness accounts and reports - many produced while the heat of battle was still on the writers - and a staggering number of German photographs few of which have been published before. All in all it is a dramatic account of what it was like to fight on the other side to 'the few' during the battle of Britain." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Wainwright John.
TAIL-END CHARLIE. ONE MAN'S JOURNEY THROUGH A WAR.
Macmillan London 1978. 187 pp 8vo 8 1/8" H hard cover in dust jacket. Ex-library. "The story of one man's journey through a war.including the funny bits frightening bits and idiotic bits. That is how John Wainwright approaches the subject of how he came to fly - and to survive - no less than seventy-two night bombing raids in Lancasters in the second world war. It was theoretically seventy-three raids - but he explains the circumstances that made the number officially even greater than it really was. On all these missions he flew as Rear-Gunner. As an introduction to this daunting experience he tells of his short adult working life in 'civvy street' before the Air Force claimed him. But the book is about flying the crew he flew with s o m e i n d i v idual raids perhaps above all his direct and down-to-earth recollections of 'what it was like'. John Wainwright does not deal in heroics 'stiff upper lips' the tradition of much recent writing about the war. Factual detail is p ar t of hi s bu si ne ss - such as in his description of what gear the rear-gunners donned for each flight unofficial as well as official: the unofficial armour to protect their manhood for instance. He defends his generation: 'Occasionally as in 19 39 war b eco mes th e lesser of two evils and at that moment it becomes not glorious but urgent. But let nobody suggest that we who fought that war enjoyed that war'.It is one man's journey through a war - a fascinating recollecti on in tran q uili ty by a man who lived through one of the most terrifying parts cast for those who acted in the Second World War." His readable and entertaining narrative describes a rapid and eventful progression from cadet to Flight Commander of a Beaufort squadron whilst also giving a clear impression of the society he lived in and the RAF itself struggling to come to terms with the dramatic changes war wrought upon a once peaceful country. Also illustrates Gibbs' increasing dedication to the airborne torpedo as a means for attacking coastal shipping. His articulate account - the vivid impression of a young airman at war - conveys a clear picture of the evolving tactics of Beaufort squadrons as they adapted swiftly to changing circumstances and demands."
