First edition stated of this unusually scarce catalogue marketing the “only model plane†fitted with a rudimentary automatic pilot installed into the sailplane which featured an 84 in. wingspan. The prototype model had been tested at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx New York prior it’s division into six different park spaces by Robert Moses’s construction of the Henry Hudson Parkway and Mosholu Parkway. The fuselage was designed to be 45 in. long standing 16 in. climbing 500 feet per minute and designed to be dismantled into 6 different pieces and stowed in special case. Although the catalogue is vague on the “Automatic Pilot†it appears to have been some sort of early mechanical gyroscope possibly similar to the autopilot introduced by Sperry and Shiras in 1930 for the US Army Air Corps. Elton 1893-1966 was an aviation enthusiast and cartoonist who began as a sports cartoonist with the Philadelphia Record and Motion Picture Magazine and moved in 1916 to movie animation with Paramount-Bray Studio Cameragraph Film Co. and directed The Whozit Weekly cartoon series for Universal from 1918-1920 where both his sisters worked as silent film actresses. He continued as an animator and cartoonist publishing his “Jack Daw’s Adventures†cartoon strip and then was recruited about 1932-1933 by Walt Disney where he subsequently moved to California and spent the rest of his career until 1950 when he began manufacturing model airplanes again for Hobby Craft Supply Maufacturing in Burbank CA. Illustrations are included for the engines as well as the Hawker Fury Fairey Battle Hawker Hurricane Supermarine Spitfire De Havilland Hornet Avro Lancaster Bomber and of particular interest the Lancastrian VH742 -- the first jet airliner. It also details the early development of jet engines for the Gloster Meteor the Trent engine for jet fighter aircraft and the Derwent V for the first jet airliner. The second catalogue details the jet age engines by Rolls-Royce including the Nene the Tay Derwent V the Avon which powered Canberras and the prototype Avro Vulcan the Supermarine Swift and the Meteor IV jet fighter which first flew in 1945 and became an operational production aircraft in 1947 and was a successful combat fighter. The folding route maps also identify prohibited airspace. The March 1937 Cairo-Damascus-Calcutta schedule has been updated in places in a contemporary hand. For example at El Qantara Egypt fuel and lubricating oil are now available Baghdad's runways are recorded as "under construction" and the airfield at Bandar Dilam in Persia is noted as abandoned. The handful of Shell aviation guides held institutionally are all found in the US. 4 works octavo. Each with folding route map and plans in text. The text details instrument approach procedures obstructions lighting and services for key airfields gives procedures to be followed after forced landings "in the blue" and lists distress signals. Formed in May 1942 within Middle East Command No. 216 Ferry Group later No. 216 Air Transport and Ferry Group handled all transport requirements for the Middle East theatre and was commanded for most of the war by Air Commodore Whitney Willard Straight 1912-1979. First American edition of this excellent and well-illustrated work on aviation by Santos-Dumont who was a pioneering Brazilian aviator at the turn-of-the-19th- into the 20th-Century. The diminutive playboy and talented engineering machinist raced motorized tricycles Locomobiles and began building his own dirigibles and in 1901 piloted his Airship No. 6 sround the Eiffel Tower. In 1904 after publication of this work he began experimenting heavier-than-air aircraft building an unsuccessful helicopter in 1905 and in 1906 a biplane reminiscent of the Wright Flyer dubbed a “canard†by the French and in 1906 set the first aviation record in Europe. First edition in English of this work examining the preparations and efforts of the Salomon August Andree’s doomed Polar Expedition via balloon in 1897 traveling with Knut Fraenkel and Nils Strindberg. Andree beleived he could steer the hydrogen-filled balloon with a drag line but this proved ineffective and his Polar balloon the Ornen Eagle leaked far more hydrogen than expected and as of the end of this contemporary crashed and disappeared. In 1930 the expedition’s last camp was discovered with documents and photos recording how they’d crashed on a drifting ice pack poor Arctic gear and died on Kvitoya in Svalbard. This fascinating film was shot in a semi-documentary style providing splendid footage of the USS Los Angeles mid-air docking/recovery of a fighter aircraft and the crash of an airship during a storm just a few years before the Hindenburg disaster. The movie starred Jack Holt Ralph Graves and Fay Wray two years before her huge success in King Kong. Their fleet included Douglas DC-7 Douglas DC-6 and Boeing Stratocruiser prop planes flying their customers to The Philippines Hong Kong Japan India Thailand and French Indo-China Vietnam Hawaii & Alaska. 1919. The nuts and bolts of the air war in the desert Superbly detailed visual record of the RAF's central logistical hub for the Middle East theatre serving the region from Egypt to the Hejaz. The depot offered complete servicing from erection out of the crate to scrapping after strike off. Images include personnel groups exteriors and interiors of workshops warehouses hangars and auxiliary buildings: a complete survey of the staffing and facilities of the complex. The prints are of striking quality the images sharply focussed and crisply printed rewarding close examination under a lens with a wealth of detail. Perhaps the most arresting photographically are the shots of the storage spaces unoccupied aisles extending into the distance filled with fastidiously ordered ranks of parts; a touch uncanny but effectively evocative of scale and rigorous organization. Based at RAF Aboukir Abu Qir near Alexandria X AD was the largest such facility in the region part of a complex including an airfield home base for a flight school and several training squadrons - craft where identified Nieuports and SE-5s bear tail numbers assigned to regional trainers - all of which continued in use until the end of WWII. The present copy is uncaptioned but comparison with records of the two copies traced through auction - the only others found - it is possible to identify a number of the images: various groups of personnel HQ staff carpenters fitters stores staff football and gymnastics teams; the headquarters buildings; tool stores; the contents of the parts stores encompassing small fabric pieces aircraft fittings spare wings and planes motor machine-gun engine and balloon spares; the depot's motor transport vehicles mainly Crossley tenders; the base tennis courts; the engine-erecting shop; outdoor engine testing; hangars; the riggers' shop dismantling shop dope shop and salvage hangar. Landscape album 195 x 260 mm containing 66 original official gelatine silver prints including title page 100 x 155 mm some with light sepia toning mounted on 34 leaves of greyish yellow light card. Cord sewn into greyish yellow light card wraps. Covers worn creased and stained with some areas of loss to the extremities; but the contents clean and sound the photographs themselves crisply defined and with great tone; very good. paperback

Ryan Flying School in Salem & Albany Oregon. The photos depict Franklin seated in the cockpit of a race plane; aerial view of the Salem Airport and other airports; image of a 1935 Waco YPF-6 Biplane crashed onto its belly with pontoons laying behind; trick flying including inverted shots and smoke writing a ‘76†for Union 76 Gasoline. Along with an interior and exterior shot of a stylish streamlined Art Deco 1937 DeSoto the album concludes with a shot of Watsonville Airport in Santa Cruz CA with a Travel Air E-4000 biplane at the hangar entrance owned by D.M. Harwick with dirigible flying above the field. Franklin 1912-1957 was the son of longtime Salem dry cleaner owner Orie F. Franklin 1882-1960 and after Ryan Flying School became a C.A.A. flying instructor in Albany Oregon enlisted and served in the Navy during World War II recovered from a bout of malaria and following the War moved to California where he became a test pilot for North American Aviation jet aircraft until 1955. He subsequently became a Hollywood Stunt pilot working with Paul Mantz and is perhaps best remembered as having restored with his friend Coffin one of three Ryan B-1 aircraft substituted as Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis and also doubled along with Mantz for James Stewart for some shots in the filming of the 1957 movie “The Spirit of St. Louis.†Tragically he was subsequently killed after filming in an automobile accident along Pacific Highway. Winzen 1917-1979 pioneering German-American aeronautical engineer was interned during World War II and later significantly advanced material and construction of high-altitude balloons after World War II. First facsimile edition 1 of 95 copies printed of this curious treatise detailing how Pocock achieved nearly 20 miles per hour while driving his Charvolant a kite-hauling carriage from Bristol to Marlborough in 1827. Pocock was an aviation pioneer who conducted experiments on the use of kites how to lift draw and move items by using kites and finally capped it with his huge kites drawing the Charvolant. One of Pocock’s giant kites still exists in the Museum of Bristol a BBC team recreated and flew the kite successfully in 2009 and in 2009 Takeshi Sugimoto of Kanagawa University determined that as long as the carriage was not exposed to the wind and kites were aloft they did produce sufficient lift to offer steady driving speeds for the carriage. He founded and edited the scientific magazine La Nature and even managed to escape the 1870 siege of Paris by flying a balloon and in 1883 created the first powered airship by attaching a Siemens electric motor to an airship. Albert Tissandier 1839-1906 was a noted adventurer aviator architect and archaeologist who collaborated with his brother on the magazine La Nature.
