With 148 silver gelatin silver print & albumen photos sized from 2 x 2.5 in. up to 4 x 5.5 in. w/ the majority sized approx. 3.5 x 4.5 in. many w/ pen or pencil annotations in lower margins or w/in the images some dated most mounted or tipped in either w/ gray corners or black corners. This intriguing photo album documents the travel through China during the Xinhai Revolution by a well-to-do oil merchant and family. The album opens with shots in and around the Shanxi Province which after the fall of the Qing Dynasty became the earliest bases for the Communist Party and peasants recruited to join the People’s Revolution. The photos show a typical Chinese Inn the stone bridge leading into the Shanxi Province armed guards in the party with all holding weapons casualties being carried away from the battlefields as well as Chinese street beggars. Several photos show the crossing of the Yellow River the stark landscape water tower as well as battlefield casualties one with dogs dragging around a corpse’s head while another shows Chinese prisoners chained to stakes with their heads covered in wicker baskets. Also shown are the buildings and workers for the Yang Chang Yanchang Oil Company originally founded in 1905 with oil derricks and drilling equipment while still another includes the written caption “Ahlo’s Coal Mine near Peking.†Also included are images of the group traveling on the Marie B. cabin cruiser out of Shanghai Chinese Junks on the Yangtze River in the harbor Chinese peddlers river scenes iconic bridges and temples. There are several views of Beijing the American Legation building in Beijing the city wall Canal Street and a few of the famed ancient observatory followed by views of the group leaving on the SS Mongolia in 1913 and traveling to Japan and views of coaling the ship in Nagasaki Japan. At the time the SS Mongolia was a 13369 ton passenger and cargo liner for the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. later for the US Navy and later as the President Fillmore for the Dollar Line. Uniformly in original beige & red patterned post-binder albums sewn at gutter margins with copper-coloured silk braids wear rubbing rubbing to corners minor tears to a few leaves sewing starting on vol. II a few pieces lifted still a remarkable set. This marvelous pair of travel photo albums and scrapbooks provides an excellent first-hand account of China Japan Korea and The Philippines just prior to the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. The extensive typescript manuscript commentary by a member of the Phi Delta Kappa travel group was part of tour group with USC Sociology professor and dean Emory Bogardus 1882-1973 and law professor William Campbell who organized these tours in order to provide cultural and social contacts between the United States and other Pacific Rim nations. With an emphasis on sociological and cultural lectures offered at various stops along with visits to schools business and cultural sites in the countries on the itinerary these Phi Delta Kappa and other similar non-profit groups worked diligently between the Wars to reduce animosity amongst international ethnic groups. Departing on the SS Taiyo Maru of the N.Y.K. line on June 20 1936 nearly 90 teachers educators and professors traveled with Mrs. Howard who carefully lists the participants includes photos of the life saving drills the huge bathtubs along with poses with the ship’s officers attended lectures in their private dining room and even includes beautifully printed colour woodblock printed menus. Her journal records her awe with the size and beauty of Yokohama’s harbor which she had always dreamed of seeing details visits to schools such as girl’s school in Yokohama with photo of girls using abacuses in math buying souvenirs and artwork. Her lively commentary notes 14-year old Japanese girls working as conductors for tourists in National Parks such as Mt. Aso; not being able to view Mt. Fuji due to being caught on buses in the pouring rain; the cleanliness and timeliness of the Japanese trains and how Japanese baths succeed in “boiling the dirt off.†In addition the outlines several additional visits to Japanese schools including primary schools a girls middle school where they viewed classes at work girls performing traditional Japanese dances followed up by a visit to the Katakura Silk Filature Company. One section of her journal notes the means by which Japan seemed to maintain full employment was by employing 100s of Japanese laborers passing small wicker baskets of coal from worker to worker from dock and down into the bunkers for fueling of their steamships. The tour continues by visiting Shanghai with a journal entry about the danger from piracy in the China Sea sans Clark Gable and Jean Harlow and how their ship had taken on a contingent of well-armed Russian soldier the iron gate leading to third class was heavily locked and guarded and guards patrolled all decks with checkpoints around the ship. She has included a map souvenir of Shanghai descriptions of the city and other souvenirs tipped-in include one of the very scarce Shanghailander Almanacs edited and published by Carl Crow complete with the folding colour map of Shanghai. Her journal notes that the best show in town is the amazing vaudeville show by performers on Junks and at the piers including tumblers sleight of hand artists puppeteers contortionists dancers clowns and others entertaining the tourists and travelers arriving and disembarking at the docks. These notes are followed with extensive journal entry about seasickness from approaching typhoon the rough seas and the real possibility of not making the next port of call. After a visit and lecture tour stop in Manila The Philippines which encompassed a tour of the University together with her observations on the tropical lushness of the flowers fruits rice patties women washing clothes and then traveling onto Hong Kong. She writes about the beauty of Hong Kong harbor sightseeing and shopping. The typescript details an excursion to Sun Yat-Sen University in Canton visiting the Victoria Hotel the teaming 1000s of Chinese women and men laborers in and around the docks. The advisory notes provided by the tour are quite emphatic in mentioning skin infections intestinal infections and parasites to avoid eating fresh vegetables and fruits because they cause diarrhea and how any fever should be immediately reported to the ship’s doctor. She notes the extreme poverty in China children constantly following the tourist groups picking up scraps of food off the street street beggars covered in sores and 1000s trying to earn a few coppers from tourists and how the filth in the streets except for the International settlements was indescribable. The Phi Delta Kappas entrain through central China visit Peking the forbidden city the Peking Union Church stay at the Grand Hotel and include photos and observations on the Ming Tomb the floating palace of the Empress Dowager and the Temple of Heaven. Ms. Howard writes of the astonishing variety of goods available in Peking with stalls stretching out everywhere selling furs embroidered silks silver jade linen and woolen goods as well as the teaming streets filled with tourists vendors and Chinese. The tour then moved onto visiting Hsinking the capital of Japanese-controlled Manchuria Manchukuo described the fortifications and security measures reaching the city photo of her group in the Yamato Hotel followed by visits to Harbin a symphony featuring Tchaikovsky music sponsored by the Railway Club Harbin Mukden and then onto Korea Chosen. She notes visiting the Heisang Girls School the Heijo Missions the extreme poverty and starvation of many Koreans under the Japanese occpation and more. They sale home via the Empress of Japan August 26 1935 from Pusan with stops in Yokohama Honolulu and Victoria BC. This painting is considered one of the great treasures of China and the Song Dynasty original and the Qing dynasty originals are preserved as national treasures in Beijing and Taipei respectively. The long sprawling work includes 100s of human figures period boats sedan chairs temples merchants working peddlers jugglers monks and a boat nearly crashing into the central bridge.
