‎Shanghai 3 postcards sent by a photographer in Shanghai to his family in Scotland‎

‎Shanghai: Brewer & Co. Booksellers 1902. Good overall. Three full back postcards of Shanghai published in Shanghai with blue images entitled "Honan Road Shanghai" "Tea House Native City Shanghai" and "Loong Hwa Pagoda near Shanghai". Brewer & Co are recorded in a 1904 edition of "The Directory and Chronicle for China ." as being located at 31 Nanking Road. The author who signs his postcards "D" is evidently a Shanghai photographer: he writes that he worked until 10 o'clock the previous night on the photographs but worries that there is something wrong with the plates. "There are a great many little holes in them -- some not so little. But I think there ought to be a few good results." There is a D. MacLennan listed as in the employ of Chinese Maritime Customs Service Index first appointed in July 1891 as a Watcher and retired in Apr 1928 as Chief Tide Surveyor and Harbour Master in Ningpo. Ancestry.com. Two are signed with the initial "D" the third signed "L. Ross". All are addressed to a Miss MacLennan at 2 addresses in Scotland: 11 Thirlestane Road Edinburgh and at Eglinton Wellington Road Nairn. 5 1/2 x 3 3/4" a few corner defects a diagonal crack in the Honan Road postcard extending a small distance into the image. ‎China Oberlin Shansi Memorial Schools J'aiku Shansi China‎

‎A Chinese student's accordion book "Made in China by the students of the Self Help Club" Shansi China‎

‎China 1930. Very good overall. An example of student's work from the Oberlin Shansi Memorial Schools an accordion book with the label "Made in China By the students of the Self Help Club of the Oberlin Shansi Memorial Schools J'aiku Shansi China" inside the front board at the back. In 1881 the Oberlin Graduate School of Theology decided to form "The Oberlin Band" to do mission work in China's then remote Shansi Province now romanized as "Shanxi" under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions ABCFM. In 1900 thirteen of them and many Chinese Christians were killed in the Taiyuan Massacre during the Boxer Uprising. The school continues to this day. Accordion book 4 1/4 x 6 3/4" with yellow & red tassel marker and slipcase with yellow & red applied design on the front. A child has illustrated the word "Animal" inside the back page. A rather undeveloped attempt at making a book and case but one must start somewhere. Most likely a fund raising effort. The date of 1930 is a guesstimate which could be wildly incorrect.

unknown‎

‎Real photo postcards of the Xinhi Gmng Xinhai Revolution of 1911 Taken by an American‎

‎1911. A group of 13 vernacular photographs printed on postcards taken in 1911 by an American who was involved in supporting the Xinhai Revolution of 1911. The postcards are all annotated on the verso and give a picture of US involvement in San Francisco Yokohama and Canton. Two postcards illustrate the ties with Japan. One is a photo of a group of six Japanese in Western clothing including a young woman in a large open touring car with the annotation "This picture was taken in front of the Clift sic House Aug. 20 1911. " Cliff house was a prominent hotel in San Francisco. At this time the U.S. Navy was entertaining the Japanese training squadron in San Francisco. Another card shows two American men in rickshaws "Jinrikshas in Yokohama Japan". We presume that these men were the American naval attachs or diplomats. The other 11 images are taken in Canton and two are related to the "72 Martyrs" that were beheaded. The annotations on the verso read: "Martyrs" who were beheaded by orders of Imperial Government for part they took in destroying the Viceroy's office 4/27/11. Soldiers are lined up on opposite side of pond just below people standing on embankment.; 11/19/11 Soldiers Rebels & sympathizers holding religious services at the graves of 72 "martyrs" buried in Canton cemetery. These were beheaded by orders of Imperial Govt. for party they took in destroying the Viceroy's office - 4/27/11. The rest are views of Canton- Canton River sampans & S. S. Wilmington in the distance American Gun boat; English Bridge Shameen to Canton a sign advertising "Yuen Hang Boulanger Canton" hangs to the right of the bridge; French Bridge Shameen to Canton this rather poor film; "One of the Bravest" on Shameen - looking up Central Ave. a soldier with a white domed hat and white puttees; Another view of the English Bridge Shameen to Canton; The American Consul's residence & office; Rear entrance to American consul's office - building on right used by the consul's coolies. Dr. Swan of Canton Hospital in his private sedan chair; along the Bund of Kook Four a suburb of Canton; View from the French Concession of Shameen looking towards Canton & near "French" Bridge. The Xinhai Revolution pinyin: Xinhi Gmng also known as the Chinese Revolution or the Revolution of 1911 was a revolution that overthrew China's last imperial dynasty the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China ROC. The revolution consisted of many revolts and uprisings. The turning point was the Wuchang uprising on 10 October 1911 which was the result of the mishandling of the Railway Protection Movement. The revolution ended with the abdication of the six-year-old Last Emperor Puyi on 12 February 1912 that marked the end of 2000 years of imperial rule and the beginning of China's early republican era. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen led the Xinhai Revolution to victory in 1911. The Republic of China in Taiwan and the People's Republic of China on the mainland both consider themselves the legitimate successors to the Xinhai Revolution and honor the ideals of the revolution including nationalism republicanism modernization of China and national unity. 10 October is commemorated in Taiwan as Double Ten Day the National Day of the ROC. In mainland China Hong Kong and Macau the day is celebrated as the Anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution. Wikipedia.

hardcover‎

‎A Familiar Letter to Personal Friends. China mission appeal letter‎

‎Boston 1879. Very good condition. An appeal from an American Congregational mission at Pao Ting Fu China now Baoding in the period leading up to the Boxer Rebellion in which Rev. Pierson introduces a new colleague whose actions following the Rebellion ignited a major debate in the United States. William S. Ament 1859 - 1909 the new colleague was vilified by Mark Twain as part of the imperialist action to seize Chinese assets when he sought indemnities for destroyed mission property from the local Chinese people. Twain believed the missionaries in China served as a front for American imperialism; Ament had in fact been arrested by French and German troops in China and charged with attempting to extort money from the local villagers. However during the Rebellion itself and the attacks on foreigners Ament acted bravely: he personally travelled alone and unarmed to Tungchow rescuing the missionaries and Chinese staff there. In Beijing he moved provisions from the Methodist compound to the British legation which enabled the people there to survive the long siege. 8vo 4pp. Printed in Boston and distributed September 6 1879. ‎Manuscript letter from Charles in Hong Kong to his sister Anna in the United States‎

‎Hong Kong 1873. Ephemera. Very good condition. A three page manuscript letter dated March 12 1873 from 'Charles' in Hong Kong to his sister 'Anna' in the United States. The letter was sent via San Francisco and the SS Colorado. Charles seems to be a young bachelor making his way in the Orient and he paints a detailed picture of daily events from a Westerners perspective but no real indication of why he is there. Charles and Anna were avid letter writers this one "No. 6" for the year. He refers to Anna's letters of Dec. 29 Jan. 5 19 that were just received. He talks of his lack of a Christmas and that most people who live in Hong Kong celebrate by getting "boozy" a sport he did not relish. He "would give more for 1 pound of good tobacco than 1 barrel of the best liquor." "For a young man who has not much determination this is the worse sic place in the world. There is nothing for him to do but play billiards & drink." He responds to Anna's questions about paper suits which were made in Japan a Joss house and the custom to accept an offer of tea 'you will have one of these little cups 7 saucers handed to you.' that he will send the 'Ivory letters to you for Miss Harrington' and refers to Anna's husband George other family and an acquaintance Wiliam Blanchard a pilot who lived in Shanghai as well as the 'great fire'. "The only thing I can say of the great fire is that it is too bad - but it may improve Boston by having different planned building and streets." The Great Boston fire of 1872 was Boston's largest and one of the most costly fire-related property losses is American history. He ends by sending his love to other family members and a request for a letter from George. The SS Colorado was the largest San Francisco-Panama route liner ever to sail the Pacific. She was originally brig-rigged but was altered in San Francisco in 1866 to enter the China service. In 1867 the Pacific Mail founded the first regular steamship service across the Pacific Ocean and the Colorado became the first American liner to carry mail across the Pacific to the Orient which helped pave the way for a rapid expansion of trade between California and the Orient. 4 page folded letter on watermarked paper "Hodgkinson & Co" with writing on 3 sides 8 3/8 x 10 1/8" with original fold marks.

unknown‎

‎China; Boxer Rebellion; Racism‎

‎Anti-Chinese caricature from the Boxer Rebellion: "Celebrating the Allied Victory"‎

‎1900. Very good overall. Pen and ink caricature depicting a Chinese man held aloft by his pigtail by an Allied soldier with the handwritten title above. The soldier likely an American Marine wears a uniform with jodhpurs. He grins at the much smaller and grimacing Chinese man who hangs in the air dressed in a robe and dangling slippers. The Boxers were Chinese displaced by natural disasters and angered by the interference of the West through their opium trade and Christian missionaries. Eventually supported by the Qing government army they proceeded to attack foreign settlements and Chinese Christians in Northern China including in Tientsin. An alliance of foreign troops including Russians Japanese Americans British French Germans and Austrians was formed to protect their countrymen. The Allies were able after a great struggle and approximately 800 casualties to successfully repel the much larger force of Boxers and Chinese troops at the Battle of Tientsin on July 13-14 1900. The pen and ink caricature is a spontaneous sketch made by an American soldier celebrating victory and playing to anti-Chinese stereotypes consistent with those of the Yellow Peril ideology which surfaced in the west in the late 1800s. 1/2 x 10 1/4" contemporary fold.

unknown‎

‎China Henshaw John Prentiss Kewley‎

‎Embossed Cameo Calling Card of the Episcopal Bishop of Rhode Island with Chinese characters‎

‎Boston: Dickinson. Very good condition. John Prentiss Kewley Henshaw 1792 - 1852 was elected the fourth Episcopal Bishop of Rhode Island in 1843 and served as rector of Grace Church in Providence. He is listed as one of the Missionary Bishops elect for Chinese mission in church minutes dated October 23 1844. In 1845 he served as co-consecrator with William Jones Boone who was the first Anglican missionary bishop of Shanghai. While it is not clear that Henshaw served in China one would assume that he had sufficient Chinese connection to warrant a calling card with his name in Chinese. Bishop Henshaw seems to have been a slave holder. The Rhode Island Historical Society which holds his papers from 1813 - 1852 Catalog number: MSS 1133 lists a bill of sale for a female slave named Fanny who Henshaw purchased in May of 1835 in Baltimore from a man named Charles Harrison. The embossed or "cameo" card with two female allegorical figures garlands and dove. With the bishop's name in elaborate hand with Chinese characters below. ‎China; Taiwan Kai Shek Chiang‎

‎A Brief Summary of the New Life Movement Chiang Kai Shek strategy to defeat Communism‎

‎Nanchang Kiangsi China: The Association for the Advancement of New Life Movement 1934. Good condition. Pamphlet touting the benefits of the Chinese government led civic education program known as the New Life Movement established by General Chiang Kai-shek to promote cultural reform combat corruption and unite China under a centralized ideology. China at the time had been threatened by Western imperialism as well as rising Japanese militarism and communism. The New Life Movement stressed traditional Confucian morality and the Methodist notion of self-cultivation as the solution to the perceived degeneration of the Chinese people and was considered by the Kuomintang to be key element of Sun Yat Sen's Three Principles of the People. In China the New Life Movement ended in 1949. Chiang launched this movement from his Nanjing headquarters when he was the leader of the Republic of China. He expelled Chinese communists from the party and led a successful unification of China. Despite a professed focus on reform Chiang's government concentrated on battling Communism within China as well as confronting Japanese aggression. When the Allies declared war on Japan in 1941 China took its place among the Big Four. Civil war broke out in 1946 ending in a victory by Mao Zedong's Communist forces and the creation of the People's Republic of China. From 1949 until his death Chiang led the KMT government in exile in Taiwan which many countries continued to recognize as China's legitimate government. The 'Contents' include the Beginning of the New Life Movement NLM; The Unification and Promotion of the NLM; the Future of the NLM; The Important Speeches of General Chiang Kai-Shek; The Slogans Rules and Emblem of the NLM; Outline of the NLM; Appendix: The Staff of the General Association for the Promotion of the NLM. The Appendix last 2p comprises a list of the organizations staff; President Chiang Kai Sheh 32 Directors a Director-in-Chief a General Secretary Secretary and Head of the First Second & Third Departments and 18 Secretaries. The lengthy list of slogans and rules runs to 95 items including #40. Do not smoke opium. We were not able to find this title on OCLC.
