Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original Ottoman cloth bdg. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 293 p., 17 b/w plates and 1 folding map, and 1 folding linguistic table (including alphabets used in India such as Sanskrit, Brahmi, Devanagari and their pronunciations in Latin and Arabic alphabets). Slightly loosed spine, skillfully repaired a part of the spine, fading and chipped on the board's extremities, slight stains on the plates. Overall a good copy. Extremely rare (with a map and the plate at the end of the book) first edition of this eye-witness travel account of the Indo-Islamic culture during the British Raj in the late 19th century, by the Hamidian period Turkish ambassador and scholar Sirvanî (1831-1890), who had written and translated three geographical books as well. Sirvânî completed his travel memoirs on his return from India to Constantinople, where he was sent as an ambassador by Sultan Abdulhamid II between 1877-1879. The narrative of his journey begins with the landing in India from Constantinople by ferry. He describes the splendid and fascinating British Indian cities, regions, and buildings such as Bombay, Poona, Dakkan, Udaipur, Baroda, Ajmer, Jaipur, Amber Fortress, Allahabad, Benares, Calcutta, Jaipur, Lucknow, Agra, Alexandre, Delhi, Nepal, Racputana, Indor, Sind, Bundelkhand, Datia, Chatarpur, Bina, Mihr, Bihar, Bengal, Ceylon, Aligarh, Sirhind, Lahore, Kashmir, Dekkan, Orissa, Avrang, Bijapur, Malia, Khandesh, Gujarat, Hugli, Madras, Maisur, Jehlam, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, Nevshar, Mardan, Swat (now in Pakistan), Beloojistan, Peshawar, Afghanistan, Kabul, Ghazna, Kandahar, Herat, Badakhshan, etc. This first-hand travel account offers an invaluable insight into the customs of Indian peoples living in the region as well as the onomastics and ethnography of India and Afghanistan. The Southern Lut and Iranian Baluchistan.

This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Dr. Alfons Gabriel (1894 – 1976) was a Viennese doctor of medicine as well as an acclaimed geographer and travel writer who, accompanied by his wife Agnes, explored the deserts of Iran, in three expeditions in the years 1927 to 1928, 1933 and 1937. He also spent a great deal of time in the Dutch East Indies. Among his highly acclaimed books include "Durch Persiens Wüsten" [Through Deserts of Persia], published in 1935, which was translated to Persian. Dr. Gabriel's first expedition in the years 1927-28 was commenced from the Persian Gulf, travelling into the mountainous country of Bashagird in southern Iran, where he entered Anguran, and via the Jaz Murian swamp penetrated into the Lut, crossed the desert by new paths, and investigated the great northern Iranian salt-swamps. Four years later in 1933 he undertook his second journey, spending several months in the salt-swamps of northern Iran, exploring the sand desert of the Rig-i-Jinn, the Desert of Ghosts, then crossed the middle part of the Lut, and continued to the south into the Sarhad of Iranian Baluchistan. Accompanied by a colour route map and many spectacular photographic images, this important first-hand report delineates Dr. Gabriel's third and last journey in 1937, during which he explored the unknown territory of southern Lut, the great desert of Iran and Iranian Baluchistan, which resulted in filling several blanks on map. He provides vivid description of his journey and includes fascinating remarks on sandstorms, the inhabitants of Hudiyan, date plantations, remains of old stone buildings belonging to Kafar race, remains of old settlements at Surk, fortress of Hajji Agha Khan at Khash, and much more.

He was born in Santarém (sometimes spelled Shantarin or Xantarin) and hailed from the Banu Taghlib tribe. Ibn Bassam describes how the incessant invasions of the Castilians forced him to run away from Santarém in Portugal, "the last of the cities of the west," after seeing his lands ravaged and his wealth destroyed, a ruined man with no possessions save his battered sword. Especially well known is his anthology Dhakhira fi mahasin Ahl al-Jazira. one of the most important sources of information in the field of history, literature, and culture of the Almoravid dynasty. It was edited in eight volumes by Ihsan Abbas, written in rhymed prose, many of its biographies are contemporary and filled out with details taken from the Kitab al-Matin of Ibn Hayyan. The parts taken from that book are easily distinguishable because Ibn Bassam prefixes the words qala Ibn Hayyan ("Ibn Hayyan says") and concludes the extract with intaha kalam Ibn Hayyan ("here ends ibn Hayyan's words"). The set is 8 volumes, this is only one volume (2.1).

Rare issue of Al-Musawar, an Egyptian magazine, featuring content of assorted local interest from 90 years ago, including the latest news in aviation - Misr Airwork having only just been founded 17 days earlier, athletes in the 1st Maccabiah Games, entertainment, politics, military, education, artisanry and more. Text is in Arabic. Folio. 23 pages, opening from the left side, replete with photographic illustration throughout, plus fully illustrated front cover. Volume measures approximately 28,5 x 42 cm. Some wear to edges and spine, folded at center, otherwise in very good, original condition. The front cover is dominated by a dashing young aviator donning his leather flight helmet and goggles, surely a notable Egyptian pilot chosen by the newly formed Misr Airlines. Misr Airlines, a division of Misr Airwork (1932-1949), now known as Egypt Air, was founded on 7 June 1932 "to promote the spirit of aviation among Egyptian youth", thus becoming the seventh carrier in the world. The headquarters of Misr Airwork, S.A.E. was in Almaza Aerodrome, Heliopolis, Cairo. The initial investment was EG£20,000, with ownership split between the Misr Bank (85%), Airwork (10%), and Egyptian private investors (5%). Operations started in July 1933, initially linking Cairo with Alexandria and Mersa Matruh using de Havilland DH.84 Dragon equipment. Misr Airlines is the oldest airline servicing both Africa and the Arab world. Although several other airlines sprang up in Africa during the 1930s, no other airlines were developed in the Arab world until the mid-1940s. An article of aviation interest found within, remembers the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin flying overhead on its 1931 Middle East Flight, with aerial images its own large shadow and the scene below. A memorial to Étienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904), French scientist, physiologist and chronophotographer, whose scientific works touched many fields, including physical instrumentation and aviation, also appears at the center of the issue. There are two full pages concerning athletes, being the elite who had participated in the 1932 Maccabiah Games. There were 390 athletes from 27 countries who participated in the first Maccabiah, including over 69 Jewish athletes from Arab countries such as Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. There were several Muslim boxers from Egypt. Al-Musawar is an Egyptian weekly magazine with its headquarters is in Cairo. Launched in 1925, its founder was George Bey Zidan. One of its longest-serving editors was journalist Fekry Abaza who held the post from 1926 to 1961. In 1960 the Egyptian government took ownership and control of the publication. Abaza was suddenly fired due to an article published on 17 August 1961.

Extremely rare first Turkish edition of the legend of Hatem of Tai tribe, or "the tale of Hatemtai, or qissa-e Hatem-Tai" which was very popular in the Indian subcontinent, as well as the earliest printed separate form from the Arabian nights [Alf laila wa laila] in the Middle East. In Turkish literature, this story was printed nine times separately from the Arabian nights (1840, 1856, 1867, 1871, 1874, 1879, 1885, 1891, 1925). This is the very first edition of this book. Hatim al-Tai (?âtim bin Abd Allâh bin Sa'ad a't-Tâ'iyy; Hatim of the Tayy tribe; deceased 578), was the ruling prince and poet of the Tayy tribe of Arabia. Stories about his extreme generosity have made him an icon among Arabs up until today, as evident in the proverbial phrase "more generous than Hatim". His son was Adi ibn Hatim, who was a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Al-Tai lived in Ha'il in present-day Saudi Arabia and was mentioned in some Hadiths by Muhammad. He died in 578 AD and was buried in Tuwarin, Ha'il. His tomb is described in the Arabian Nights. He lived in the sixth century CE and was also mentioned in the Arabian Nights stories. The celebrated Persian poet Saadi, in his work Gulistan (1259 CE) wrote: "Hatim Tai no longer exists but his exalted name will remain famous for virtue to eternity. Distribute the tithe of your wealth in alms; for when the husbandman lops off the exuberant branches from the vine, it produces an increase of grapes". He is also mentioned in Saadi's Bostan (1257). According to legends in various books and stories, he was a famous personality in the region of Ta'i (present-day Ha'il) and is also a well-known figure in the rest of the Middle East as well as the Indian subcontinent, featuring in many books, films, and TV series in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Turkish, Hindi and various other languages. The books on the story usually consist of a short introduction describing his ancestry and character and tell the seven episodes based on seven riddles, asked by a beautiful and rich woman named Husn Banu, who will marry only the person who is able to obtain answers to all seven of them. A king, who falls in love with her but is unable to find answers, tells the generous Hatemtai, whom he meets by chance, all about it. This print is the result of what used to be breakthrough technology now completely obsolete that allowed a photographic image to be scanned transmitted over "the wire" telegraph phone satellite networks and then printed at the receiving location. A detailed intelligence handbook the folding maps in excellent condition First edition of this regional survey for the armed services published for official use only and compiled by the Arab Bureau's David Hogarth following his recruitment to naval intelligence in 1915. The four folding maps present Arabia's settlements tribal distribution and orographic and land-surface features. After general physical and social surveys chapters cover Bedouin tribes the Hejaz Asir Yemen Aden and the Hadhramaut Oman the Gulf coast Nejd Jebel Shammar the northern Nefud and Dahanah belts and settled tribes. The appendices comprise a system of transliteration from Arabic to English and an extensive glossary of topographical terms. "The sources from which this work has been compiled include native information obtained for the purpose since the outbreak of the war. This applies in particular to the strength and distribution of the Bedouin tribes and to their political relationships. Recent information from native sources has also been used for parts of the Red Sea littoral such as the little-known region of Asir" preliminary note. The confidential nature of Clayton's successive offices necessarily obscured the importance of his achievements First appearance in print first impression of the English text of the Hadda and Bahra Agreements negotiated by Sir Gilbert Clayton and Ibn Saud. The printer's slug records that 1125 copies were printed in January 1926 one month after the agreements were presented to Parliament by Leo Amery the colonial secretary and the future political nemesis of Neville Chamberlain. As Ibn Saud continued to expand his power base in the early and mid-1920s "the turbulent events. precipitated British diplomatic intervention. this led to a series of missions to the Hejaz led by Sir Gilbert Clayton between 1925 and 1928" Leatherdale p. 138. The accords reached in 1925 established a tribunal to rule on frontier disputes and placed limitations on the movements of traditionally peripatetic tribes. On the part of Ibn Saud participation in the agreement was a deliberate diplomatic strategy designed to maintain British neutrality vis-à-vis his broader geopolitical goals. Concerning Clayton M. W. Daly observes that "while colleagues and subordinates such as T. E. Lawrence achieved worldwide fame the confidential nature of Clayton's successive offices necessarily obscured the importance of his achievements" ODNB. Octavo pamphlet pp. 16. Niebuhr only covered a small triangle of Yemen in his exploration but Palgrave stated it was his "intelligence and courage which first opened Arabia to Europe". The work was first published in German and then in this edition in French both were published in Copenhagen. Niebuhr was the source for Gibbon on Arabia.
