This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. A captivating expedition report detailing Lieutenant H. B. Vaughan's early travels in uncharted regions of eastern Persia, and a caravan journey through the Great Salt Desert, Dasht-i-Kavir, accompanied by a bright colour route map for illustration. Vaughan determined the true position of several places only roughly placed on previous maps, and discovered numerous additional towns, villages, or halting stations unknown to European geographers. Here he describes mining towns and desolate villages, conflict between Arabs and Persians, an encampment of 100 tents for an estimated 300 nomadic Persians, and other peculiarities of this foreign land, inlcuding customs of the Bhaloos and the Iliyats. Colonel Vaughan undertook two adventurous journeys of exploration and espionage in Persia for which he was awarded the MacGregor Medal in 1892, in those days very much the medal of the "Great Game" of rivalry between Britain and Russia in Central Asia.

8vo. 29 pages. Text is in German. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. This issue contains a fascinating compendium on Persia, written during the Russo-Persian War and the brief Franco-Persian alliance. The author draws from and quotes passages of Guillaume-Antoine Olivier's now extremely scarce title, the final volume of which had finally been published the same year in 1807, "Le Voyage dans l'Empire Othoman, l'Égypte et la Perse" [A Journey in the Ottoman Empire, Egypt and Persia]. An early nineteenth century account covering geography, natural history, commodities such as gold and silver, and social customs from various different ethnic groups. In this text Persians are ascribed attributes such as civilized, rich, polite, and hospitable, at the same time struggling with long-standing inter-racial conflicts between Arabs, Uzbeks, Kurds, Afghans, and Turkmen (Turkoman), the latter of which are described as warlike. Further topics of interest include practices of astrology, medicine, opium usages, and nomadic gypsies. A scarce dissertation and unique item to pair with the collector's volume. Guillaume-Antoine Olivier (1756-1814) was one of the great French naturalists and entomologists, who in 1796, together with physician and zoologist Jean-Guillaume Bruguières, travelled to Persia for six years on a major expedition, and returned to France in 1798 with substantial natural history specimens from Turkey, Asia Minor, Persia (Iran), Egypt, and some Mediterranean islands. His large collection is now mostly at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. These are the original pages printed in 1807, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal.

Extracted from a chapter on 'Amara in an unpublished work, this report provides a fascinating portray of the marshes, as well as Ma'dan and Baidha tribes, with remarks on the produce and trades.

Prince Sixte of Bourbon's knowledgeable analysis of potential trans-Sahara communications and the most feasible route into and across the Sahara: through North Africa - the Sudan route and what the prince describes as the natural basis for conquest of the south; in the west, the Mauretanian route which avails itself of the Saura valley and the old caravan route running along the Hank and, the route he favoured most, that of the Congo - the trans-African option he considered would serve the international interests of central Africa. Features a compelling narrative of the prince's 9,000 mile journey across the Eastern French Sahara, including details of the expedition personnel; of the motor cars (solidly built Delahayes) and the route: Tunis, southern Algeria, south of Tripoli, across the great Ténèré running from Bilma to Tripoli; Tibesti (peopled according to the Tuaregs with djinns and fairies; Wada to Fort Archambault in the Ubangi-Shari and a return to Lake Chad. Includes really entertaining anecdotes of the local Tubus and vivid descriptions of the volcanic country. In addition are lovely illustrations of the Canyons of Tibesti, a dance of Sara warriors, Borku dancers at Faya, the arrival of the expedition in Agadez, and trucks crossing the dunes of the "grand Erg oriental".

This is a riveting account of French Expedition through Afghanistan containing valuable information on the geography, the ethnography, ancient monuments, and the influence of human races on the country, accompanied by a full-age sketch route map and amazing photographic plates depicting the entrance to Afghanistan at Islam Kala, the Bala Hissar in Herat, Bulalah near Bamiyan, the Bamiyan valley, and Turkomans. The expedition party commenced its journey from Islam Kala, entering Herat, then proceeded to Kabul by the southern road, passing almost entirely through purely "Afghan" country, through Farah, Girishk, Kandahar, and Ghazni. Among many ancient monuments and places visited some include: the monuments of Herat, Shah Rukh Tomb, Tomb of Abu Ismail Khwaja Ansari at the great pilgrimage center of Gazarga, the mausoleum of Dost Muhammad Khan - the Great Amir of Afghanistan, remain of Ghaznavid, monument at Kala-i-Bist,and Bamiyan archaeological site. With fascinating remarks on Afghan dances, Durrani tribes, Muslim and Ghaznavid art, Buddhist occupation of Bamiyan and Mongol invasion of Bamiyan.

Six Weeks in Shabwa
Hamilton travelled to Shabwa, the "Hidden City of Arabia", as a Political Officer on duty; beginning his journey from Beihan in the winter of 1938, following the course of the Wadi Balharith, the continuation of Wadi Beihan, in the company with about two hundred and fifty of the Bal Harithand Karab tribe. He brought with him a copy of Philby's lecture and maps and his notes of his own journey dating from 1931. In this fascinating report he makes many remarks on Philby's report and findings, and gives a vivid description of the geographical features, the tribes, ruins as well as his excavation. Hamilton believed that the wall city of Shabwa was a cemetery, collection of mausolea and graves, and suggesting that the ruin area, which includes Jardan, Markjha and Beihan, was the southern collecting point for caravans from the south coast. 19 pages, including sketch map and black and white plates. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Delving beyond the geographical wonders of Makran's waterless rivers and mountain ranges, aside from the objective of geologically mapping a strip along the coast 50 miles wide, from Jask to the Baluchistan border, Harrison describes the native way of life. By examining the then sultan-governed region in a series of inland traverses, he encounters and interacts with the Baloch people as well as Muslims. Of the Balochs, Harrison provides a substantial account of customs including survival and sustenance in a harsh land, graves, costume, date harvesting, and much more. Illustrations show graves, a cliff dwelling, mat huts, the badlands near Bandini, and a mud volcano. One of Makran's outstanding features described is the water-courses seldom contained water and had subsequently become the natural roads for travel, where the means were limited to camels or donkeys. Other geological aspects were perplexing findings, and described in scientific terms. Of the scientific explorers of Persian Baluchistan, J.V. Harrison, D.Sc., occupied a leading role. By the time of this account, the author had been for twenty years a member of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and had made numerous expeditions to the area, the first being in 1917. In the present account he describes a journey made in 1932, part of a multi-year undertaking with plans made for as far ahead as 1937.
