Like moths to the flame: The Ottoman fire brigades.= Ates pervaneleri: Tulumbacilar. [Exhibition catalogue]. February 24 - May 31, 2011.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 79 p., color ills. Like moths to the flame: The Ottoman fire brigades.= Ates pervaneleri: Tulumbacilar. [Exhibition catalogue]. February 24 - May 31, 2011. 500 copies were printed. Our struggle, conducted under the direction of Alm I las beginning in 1005, to see that the machines and items used in, and the documents and photographs pertaining to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory be returned to their rightful place, reached a positive conclusion in 2008, when these items were temporarily handed over to the Rezan Has Museum after being inventoried at the Museum for the History of Science and Technology in Islam. Following two years of restoration and conservation work, we held the first of a series of exhibitions about the Factory, titled "Like Moths to the Flame: The Ottoman Fire Brigades", in order to revive the spirit of the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory and to share with you t hi- important historical artifacts on their way back home. The "Like Moths to the Flame: the Ottoman Fire Brigad(-: features those indomitable heroes of the city of Istanbul, managed again and again to rise from the ashes. Heroes outfits, performers of daring acts, these brave characters fearir:ssly fought the fires that were Istanbul's greatest nightmare. Firei'vtj.i.t.(2rs, those voluntary soldiers of Istanbul, had their own unique culture, their own rally cries, attitudes, and sayings, their own characteristic relationships, and even veritable tradition of criminal incidents amongst their own, all of which provide insight into the street culture of the city of Istanbul, and the socio-cultural structure and state politics of the period. In addition to the artifacts and historical documents belonging to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory, our exhibition also contains selected items from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Libraries and Museum's Firefighting Museum Collection and the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation's Old Istanbul Photographs Collection. Numerous individuals worked together to make this exhibition happen, and to each of them we would like to express our thanks. First and foremost the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, but also the Atatark Library, our team who so painstakingly worked on the restoration and conservation of the works exhibited, Prof. Dr. Baha Tanman for his contributions, Galru Tanman, who was so generous with her support, and the Istanbul Research Institute, all of you have our eternal gratitude.

THE AGHA-YI DARUSSAADE, (in 1858).
[MANUSCRIPT OTTOMAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENT - WAQFS] [Document on Sehzâde Sultan Mehmed's waqf in Halki Island with five signatures and seals and one 'pençe'].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript document signed and sealed with stamps and 'pençe' on a special paper with 'akhar'. (Period value is '3 gurush'). 38x27 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 1 p. Repaired with tape on the verso. Text in Turkish "Haremeyn-i Muhteremeyn hazine-i behiyyesine mazbut evkaftan Sehzade Sultan Mehmed tabeserah hazretlerinin evkaf-i serifeleri müstagalatindan Üssküdar muzafaatindan Kartal nahiyyesine tabi Heybeliada'da kâin yeldegirmeni hakkinda.". It includes waqf processing in the early westernization period of the Ottoman Empire related to a windmill in Halki Island and an Armenian citizen who was its last owner. It's processed from 1275 to 1277 [1856-1858 AD]. Armenian annotations on verso. Signed with 'pençe' has no 'Beyze' ad 'Keshide' in its calligraphic style 'Muzaffer' [i.e. Triumphant]. The Kizlar Agasi (qizlar aghasi, literally, Agha of the girls), was the chief eunuch off th Ottoman Imperial harem. Although the title may have been applied to the head of the palace harem eunuchs from the empire's early years, the formal office, known as The agha-yi Darüssaade (or, Dar al-Sa'ada), literally "Commander of the Abode Felicity", dates to 996/1588, when Sultan Murad III (r. 1574-1595) transferred the supervision of the Evkâfü'l-Haremeyn (Awkâf al-Haramayn, the imperial pious foundations for the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina) to the head of harem eunuchs from the chief of the eunuchs who guarded the sultan's privy chamber in Topkapi Palace's third court. Until the 14th/19th century, the post was always attached to the supervision of the Evkâfü'l-Haremeyn. Most holders of the office, like most harem eunuchs generally, were Habesî (Habashi, Abyssinian), which in this case was a broad designation encompassing much of the Horn of Africa. (Source: Brill, Encyclopedia of Islam). In the 19th century, agha-yi darussade worked on waqf works.

THE LUMIERE BROTHERS, (Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas Lumiere & Louis Jean Lumiere), (1862-1954 / 1864-1948).
[ILLUSTRATED LUMIERE EQUIPMENTS AND GUIDE TO PHOTOGRAPHY IN TURKEY] Lümiyer fotograf rehberi. Translated by Süleyman Süreyya [Bükey], (1895-1974).
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original pictorial wrappers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 59 p., ills. First and only Ottoman edition of this richly illustrated and exceedingly rare pamphlet, translated and published by famous Turkish photographer Süleyman Sirri Bükey (1895-1974). Süleyman Süreyya [Bükey], (1895-1974), was an important person who opened a studio in the first years of Turkish Republic, signed beautiful portraits, and at the same time served photography for many years with magazines such as Foto, (1931-1934), Foto Magazin, (1938-1941), Halivud Dünyasi [i.e. Hollywood World], (1941-1946), Ufuk, (1943-1945) as well as the early guides and catalogs he published related cinema and photography. Bükey started photography as a commercial pursuit, first selling photographic material in Eminönü Flower Market in 1924. The catalog was printed depending on the agency of Gevart (Same year with Lumiere guide, in 1928 titled Gevart Fotograf Rehberi). In 1928, he founded Foto Süreyya in the Tünel district of Istanbul. He was the photographer of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk between 1936-1938. He received art medals and certificates in national and international exhibitions he participated in his photography life. The Lumière brothers were manufacturers of photography equipment, best known for their Cinématographe motion picture system and the short films they produced between 1895 and 1905. Their screening on 22 March 1895 for circa 200 members of the "Society for the Development of the National Industry" in Paris was probably the first presentation of films on a screen for a large audience. Their first commercial public screening on 28 December 1895 for circa 40 paying visitors and invited relations has traditionally been regarded as the birth of cinema. Either the techniques or the business models of earlier filmmakers proved to be less viable than the breakthrough presentations of the Lumières. Cameramen working for the Lumière Brothers, who had staged the world's first public screening of a moving picture at the Grand Café in Paris on December 28, 1895, filmed the Golden Horn and the Galata Bridge from the water in 1896, putting their signature on the first film shot in Turkey. The first public screening of a motion picture in Turkey also took place in 1896. From its inception in the Ottoman Empire, cinema gained instant popularity and soon became the cheapest and only form of public entertainment. After 32 years, the first book includes the Lumiere photographic pieces of equipment, and a guide to photography was published in 1928. Not in OCLC.; Özege 11810.

The Ottoman chief calligrapher Hamdullah Amasi
Enam-i sherif Quranic collection of several Suras signed in gold Hamdullah el Amasi the head calligrapher of the Ottoman calligraphy school began in the16th century
<p>16x11 cm. Contemporary Ottoman binding tooled in gold with Shamsa on each board and flap. Surah headings in gold and colors golden durations between verses and all pages out-ruled in gold. 16th c. Signed Hamdullah el Amasi. The signature due to the Era of the calligrapher and the writing character is same of the calligrapher's. Sheikh Hamdullah was born in Amasya a north-central town in Anatolia. His father Mustafa Dede was a Sheik of the Suhrawardi order and had migrated from Bukhara in present-day Uzbekistan to Anatolia. In Amasya he studied the six scripts under the tutelage of Hayreddin Mar'asi. He learned the traditional method of the old masters but struggled to reproduce it. While studying he met Bâyezïd the son of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror who was a fellow student and the pair became friends. When Bâyezïd assumed the throne in 1481 following his father's death he invited his friend Sheikh Hamdullah to the capital Istanbul. Hamdullah went on to become a master calligrapher at the Imperial Palace. In 1485 Bâyezïd II acquired seven works by the great calligrapher Yaqut al-Musta'simi. Bâyezïd then encouraged his court calligrapher Hamdullah to devise a new script inspired by the acquisition. Hamdullah regarded al-Musta'simi's work as unsurpassable but at Bâyezïd's insistence Hamdullah reluctantly agreed. Scholars have suggested that Bâyezïd's enthusiasm for a new script was symbolic of his desire to establish a new empire and a new dynasty. Hamdullah underwent a period of reclusion during which time he claimed that a prophet taught him the new scripts in a vision. He ultimately recodified and refined the nashk style of calligraphy originally developed by Yaqut al-Musta'simi. Hamdullah's scripts were more elegant balanced and legible. From 1500 the majority of Q'rans adopted Hamdallah's new style which became known as the Ottoman style or "Seyh's manner'. For this he is often considered to be the "father of Ottoman calligraphy". His many students spread his style throughout the Ottoman Empire. His style endured for 150 years making him one of the greatest Ottoman calligraphers of all time. As much as two centuries later students of calligraphy such as Hâfiz Osman continued to copy his works assiduously as part of their training. He devoted his whole life to the art of calligraphy continuing to produce works well into his 80s. He produced 47 Mus'hafs book of Quran and innumerable En'ams Evrads and Juz' a number of which are held in the collection of the Topkapi Palace.12 His inscriptions also decorate the Bâyezïd Firuzaga and Davud Mosques in Istanbul and the Bâyezïd Mosque in Erdine. His son Mawlana Dede Chalabi became a calligrapher after studying with Hamdallah his father and Hamdallah's daughter whose name is unknown married a calligrapher by the name of Shukrullah Halife of Amasya who had also been one of her father's pupils. Hamdullah's grandsons also became calligraphers; Pir Muhammad Dede d. 986/1580 son of Hamdallah's daughter and Dervish Muhammad d. 888/1483 son of Mawlana Dede. As his reputation grew many myths to his abilities outside calligraphy sprang up. It was said that he was a great archer falconer swimmer and even an extraordinary tailor. He died in Istanbul in 1520 and was buried at Karacaahmet Cemetery in the district of Üsküdar at Istanbul. Surviving examples of his works are held in the Topkapi Collection.</p> hardcover

The Ottoman survey in Qatar and the sublime port of Basra golf
The political questions of the Arabian golf region during the late Ottoman era
<p><strong>We believe this to be the first complete collection of its kind</strong> including several items that we have not encountered in public libraries or archival sources. THEODORE GUDIN, (1802-1880), (Painter); JOSEPH JOHN SKELTON, (1783-1871), (Engraver).
[ENGRAVING] Incendie du quartier de Pera a Constantinople, 9 Aôut 1839. Painted by Theodore Gudin, (1802-1880); Engraved by Joseph John Skelton, (1783-1871).
Very Good French Original color copper engraving. Oblong folio. (26 x 36 cm). Description in French. Incendie du quartier de Pera a Constantinople, 9 Aôut 1839. Painted by Theodore Gudin, (1802-1880); Engraved by Joseph John Skelton, (1783-1871). Rare color engraved print. Shows 1839 fire in Pera area in Istanbul (probably that district is Kasimpasa which mostly mariners live in), and its chaos: hectic people have appeared on the roofs of the burning houses, law enforcement agencies are working, and the muezzin has been seen on balcony for 'selâ'. Jean Antoine Théodore Gudin was a French painter of the 19th century, born in Paris. He especially painted navy scenes, and was a pupil of Girodet-Trioson. Gudin was one of the first Peintres de la Marine, at the court of Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III. Gudin died at Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1880. His daughter Henriette Gudin also became a marine painter. Skelton was an English engraver. He was brother of William Skelton, and became an engraver specialising in topographical and antiquarian subjects. Before 1819 he went to live at Oxford. Later Skelton settled in France. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1825; his name disappears from its lists in 1844. At Oxford he published Oxonia Antiqua Illustrata (1823); Antiquities of Oxfordshire, from drawings by F. Mackenzie (1823); Pietas Oxoniensis, or Records of Oxford Founders (1828); and Engraved Illustrations of Antient Arms and Armour from the Collection at Goodrich Court from the Drawings, and with the Descriptions of Dr. Meyrick, (2 volumes, 1830). He also engraved the heading to the Oxford almanacks for the years 1815 to 1831, from drawings by F. Mackenzie and C. Wild; and executed a set of fifty-six etchings of the antiquities of Bristol after H. O'Neill. (Source: Wikipedia).
