ALI NAMIC [sic. NAMIK], (1885-1953).
[EARLY TURKISH CRITICS OF SOCIALISM] Verite, justice, bonte. [i.e. Truth, justice, goodness].
Very Good French Original wrappers. Minor wear on spine, age-toned and foxing on some pages. Overall a very good copy. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In French. 446 p. First and only edition of this very scarce book written by the son of Ottoman sadrazam [i.e. prime minister] Küçük Said Pasha, including early critics of socialism. It is the first of the three books of this aristocratic Francophone Turkish intellectual who spent his childhood and youth among books, in his own words, "secluded among books". He wrote his all books in French language. Antoine Zellich, who came from Dalmatia as the manager of the printing house of Henri Cayol, who brought lithography to Istanbul, continued to operate the Cayol Printing House for a while after the death of his master in 1865 due to the cholera epidemic. Zellich, who was honored with the title of "printer of the Vatican" by Pope Leon XIII in 1888, died in Istanbul in 1890. The printing press is inherited by his eldest son, gregoire Zellich, and his brothers. This printing house continued its activities by growing and developing in Istanbul, printed a wide variety of products from books to magazines, calendars to stationery, school books to maps and commercial notebooks, and he sold them in its shops in Pera, Beyoglu. The company "Zeliç Brothers" continued its commercial activities in the republican period until it was closed in the 1960s.

ALI RIZA ARDIHÂNÎ [sic. ARDAHÂNÎ], (1848-1906?).
[THE EARLY OTTOMAN METHOD OF DEBATE] Miyârü'l-münâzara. [i.e. The criteria of debate].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Modern cloth bdg. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. [2], 181 p. Ali Riza Ardahani, the son of Dervis Hamza Bey, a member of the Kayapasazades, one of the well-established families of Ardahan, was born in the Halilefendi District of Ardahan in 1848. He worked as a civil servant in cities or vilayats such as Ardahan, Erzurum, Yemen, and Hudeybe. Kayapasazâdes is a family that was settled in the region soon after the Ottoman conquest of Ardahan (1551) for the Turkification of the region. The Kayapasazâdeler, the most established family known after the Atabeks in the history of Ardahan, supported the Ottoman army under the chieftain of Lala Mustafa Pasha in 1578 and showed great benefits in the conquest of places up to Tbilisi. Kayapasazâdes educated many important statesmen in the Ottoman and Republic periods, served the state for centuries, and especially served Ardahan and its surroundings. The presence of the family in Ardahan continued until the first years of the Republic, and then they settled in metropolitan cities, especially Istanbul. Kayapasazâdes took the surname "Ardahan" with the Surname Law enacted in 1934. The author continued his work, which he started with "Basmalah", with a prosaic prayer (Dua) and naat (praise to the Prophet), and then "It is necessary to look for the most appropriate form of 'Ilm-i Münazara'" [i.e. The method of discussion]. Ardahanî praised the sultan of his time, writing that he was encouraged by the support he gave to the education by Sultan Abdulhamid. Mi'yârü'l-münâzara has drawn a framework on which evidence is acceptable and which are not appropriate, based on questions and answers of those discussed in a debate. Özege 13810.; TBTK 3803. First and Only Edition.

New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (32 x 23 cm). In English and Turkish. 183 p. Color and b/w ills. The first Turkish admiral Chaka Bey and the naval battles in his era.= Türklerin ilk amirali Çaka Bey ve dönemin deniz savaslari. It is known that the Turcoman Bey Chaka who started the Maritime Chapter in the history of Turks integrating to Anatolia a thousand year ago, conquered Smyrna, and shook the Byzantine Empire was the same person as Chavuldur Chaka Bey from the Danishmend Bey's retinue, a member of left branch tribes of Oghuzes. He was a wellread Turcomen Bey who had full command of Greek and read Homer's poem "The Night is Falling" aloud during a conversation he had made with Byzantine Commander Dalassenos. The beginning of Crusades is directly associated with Turcoman's attacks to Anatolia led by commanders such as Suleiman Shah, Emir Chaka Bey and Abu'l Qasim.

ALI VASIB EFENDI.
Memoirs of an Ottoman prince: What I saw and heard in my homeland and in exil. Prepared by H.I.H. Prince Osman Selaheddin Osmanoglu.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Small 4to. (26 x 18 cm). In English. 720 p., ills. Memoirs of an Ottoman prince. H.I.H. Prince Ali Vâsib (known in Turkish as 'Ali Vâsib Efendi' - or, using his Turkish surname, as 'Ali Vâsib Osmanoglu') was born in the Çiragan Palace, on the shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, in 1903. His memoirs deal with the life and times of the Ottoman Imperial family during the last years of the Ottoman Sultanate, as well as with his life during his enforced exile in Hungary, France and Egypt. While in Istanbul he witnessed the First World War, the abolition of the Sultanate in 1923 and then that of the Caliphate in 1924, at which time he was exiled along with the rest of the Imperial family. He was finally allowed to return to his homeland in 1974, after half a century in exile. Ali Vâsib Efendi is the only Ottoman Imperial Prince to have written his memoirs, and they give a unique insight into the people and politics of his day. H.I.H. Prince Ali Vâsib, the great-grandson of Sultan Murad V, was at various times in the presence of the last four Ottoman Sultans as well as the last Caliph. He personally knew the leading figures of the time - such as Enver Pasha. He was a witness to key events in Ottoman history during the last days of the Empire. He lived through the occupation of Istanbul by the Allies - the Ottoman court's most difficult period - and then the exile of the Ottoman Dynasty in 1924.

ALI ÇETINKAYA, (Ottoman-born Turkish army officer and politician, who served eight terms in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey), (1878-1949).
Autograph letter signed 'Ali Çetinkaya ve Refikasi ve Kizi', sent to Turkish doctor Ethem Akif Battalgil.
Very Good Turkish Original manuscript autograph letter signed (ALS) by Ali Çetinkaya sent to Turkish doctor Ethem Akif Battalgil who was the father of Fahire Battalgil (Battalgazi), who was the first Turkish zoologist. For Battalgil's brother's death, Çetinkaya is conveying his condolences. The letter was written and signed by Ali Çetinkaya, but, he added his wife and daughter. Dated 11. IV. 1942, Ankara. Ali Çetinkaya, also known as "Kel" Ali Bey was an Ottoman-born Turkish army officer and politician, who served eight terms in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, including a period in 1939-40 as his country's first Minister of Transport. He was born in Kara Hisâr-i Sâhib (present-day Afyonkarahisar) in Hüdavendigâr Vilayet as the son of Ahmed Efendi. He studied in the Bursa Military High School (Bursa Askerî Idadisi ). After graduating from military high school, he entered the Ottoman Military Academy (Mekteb-i Füsûn-u Harbiyye-i Sâhâne ) In 1898 he graduated the academy and joined the Ottoman military as a Second Lieutenant (Mülâzim-i Sani ). During World War I, he served for the army in the Caucasus and Galicia fronts. When the Greek forces were landing at Smyrna on May 15, 1919, he was a lieutenant colonel and the commander of 172nd Infantry Regiment stationed in the Aegean coastal town of Ayvalik. His regiment was under the command of the 56th Division of Hürrem Bey. Ali played a key role in the first stage of the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922, starting with the opening battle. He was briefly able to hold back the advance into the city of Greek occupation forces. His action is considered to mark the first shots fired by regular forces in the 1919-22 Greco-Turkish War, although there were earlier confrontations in which irregular militias participated, including the battle involving Hasan Tahsin in Izmir, as well as actions in Urla and Ödemis. The hill in Ayvalik from where the first shots were fired is now called Ilk Kursun Tepesi (First Bullet Hill). Today there is a military rehabilitation center on that hill. After the war, Ali Çetinkaya was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly for eight successive terms and served until 1942, holding ministerial posts in six different governments, including, with the formation of a Ministry of Transport, becoming Turkey's first Minister of Transport. Ali Çetinkaya is considered a hero in Turkey. Cunda Island of Ayvalik was renamed Alibey Adasi (Ali Bey Island) after him, although the old name remains in common use.
