‎Al-Farabi: A civilization philosopher.‎

‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 108 p. Al-Farabi: A civilization philosopher. Al-Farabi's philosophical thinking was nourished in the heritage of the Arabic Aristotelian teachings of 10th-century Baghdad. His great service to Islam was to take the Greek heritage, as it had become known to the Arabs, and show how it could be used to answer questions with which Muslims were struggling. To al-Farabi, philosophy had come to an end in other parts of the world but had a chance for new life in Islam. Islam as a religion, however, was of itself not sufficient for the needs of a philosopher. He saw human reason as being superior to revelation. Religion provided truth in a symbolic form to non-philosophers, who were not able to apprehend it in its purer forms. The major part of al-Farabi's writings were directed to the problem of the correct ordering of the state. Just as God rules the universe, so should the philosopher, as the most perfect kind of man, rule the state; he thus relates the political upheavals of his time to the divorce of the philosopher from government.‎

‎BELLIN (Jacques-Nicolas).‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 121 p. Under Turkish skies. A family history, 1876-1960. This is a review of Ben Sperer's years in Turkey before he left the country to take up residence in Canada. In an effort to place his own story in its proper context, the author preceded it by a description of his parent's lives. It is an interesting story reflecting the memories of a colourful life of an Ashkenazi Jew in a society rich in tradition and history going back generations. It is against this background that the author describes the ups and downs, the tragedies and successes, as well as the ordinary day-to-day events of his life in Turkey.‎

‎Sephardi Jewry: A History Of The Judeo-Spanish Community, 14th--20th Centuries (ISBN:0520218221)‎

‎8vo, br. ed., 377 pages, Until the publication of this remarkably comprehensive history of the Sephardi diaspora, only limited attention had been given to the distinctive Judeo-Spanish cultural entity that flourished in the Balkans and Asia Minor for more than four centuries. Yet the great majority of Sephardi Jews, after their expulsion from Spain in 1492 and subsequently from Portugal, found their way to this region, drawn by the political stability and relatively tolerant rule of the Ottoman Empire, as well as by promising socioeconomic conditions. Esther Benbassa and Aron Rodrigue show how Sephardi society and culture developed in the Levant, sharing language, religion, customs, and communal life as they did nowhere else, both during prosperous times and during the declining fortunes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The impact of westernization, the end of Ottoman power, and the rise of fragmenting nation-states transformed this vital community in the modern era. And, like many other Jewish communities, the unique Judeo-Spanish culture was dispersed and destroyed by the Holocaust and the migrations of the twentieth century. Sephardi Jewry presents its vivid history in a readable, well-documented narrative‎

‎BENEDETTI (Vincent, comte).‎
