‎[GREECE, THE ARCHIPELAGO, MEDITERRANEAN SHORES OF NORTH AFRICA, AND WEST ANATOLIA] [Plan of Greece showing the Second Battle of Çatalca].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original b/w map. 70x57 cm. In Ottoman script. Folded. No scale info. A huge plan showing The Second Battle of Çatalca fought between 03 February 1913 and 03 April 1913 was a major "continuous skirmish" of the First Balkan War. The battle consisted of a series of thrusts and counter-thrusts by both the Ottomans and the Bulgarians. On 20 February the Ottomans, in coordination with a separate attack from Gallipoli, charged the Bulgarian positions. Although the Bulgarians repulsed the initial attack, they were weakened enough that they withdrew over fifteen kilometers to the south and twenty kilometers to the west to secondary defensive positions; but eventually the lines returned to essentially the originals. The separate siege of Edirne resulted in its loss to the Bulgarians on 26 March, sapping Ottoman morale; and with heavy Bulgarian losses to both fighting and cholera, the battle dwindled down and ceased by 3 April 1913. On 16 April a second ceasefire (armistice) was agreed to, ending the last fighting in the war. Lieutenant Colonel Mehmet Nihat Bey of Bursa who was born in 1886 accomplished to write 39 books about military history which are including his war experience and his translation works. Nihat Bey who is the first and the most important military historian in the Republic of Turkey was an intellectual person rather than a soldier. He meticulously evaluated many mistakes and points should learn about war by an objective eye in his works. Although it passed a century from the time these books had been written this great person couldn't have been totally discovered by researchers yet. The first military historian in the Republic of Turkey Mehmet Nihat Bey, participated in Tripoli, Balkan, Gallipoli, and the Turkish War of Independence. He taught in a military academy for many years and he impressed many staff officers in terms of idea. During the first years of the republic era in Turkey he lectured about military history and until the last year before he died he had given so useful pieces of information in the warfare of Çanakkale for visitors. Nihat Bey evaluated the conditions about the period of his life and the wars he participated by an objective view and he left great materials for the next generations succeeding him. He enlightened Turkish recent history by writing the events which he had witnessed. Studies of Nihat Bey have an important impact on the researchers who want to have knowledge about Balkan and Gallipoli wars which fulfilled their 100th anniversary.‎

The Gallipoli Campaign in the Great War.= Büyük Harpte Çanakkale Seferi. Prep. by Murat Karatas. Translated by Elif Berfin. The Gallipoli Campaign took place in 1915 and 1916, between Ottoman empire and the Allies; and witnessed the toughest naval and land battles of World War I. The Allied Forces were aiming to capture the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits, and then push Ottoman Empire out of the war. Whereas Turkish Army was there to defend the straits, and to stay in the war, by any means. Bursali Mehmed Nihad (participated in these battles as captain in the first year and continued as major in the next) presents an important first hand study that recites the Gallipoli Campaign, which caused hundreds thousands of casualties for both sides.‎

In the Ottoman Empire, the word "esnaf" (craftsman, tradesman) covered a wide category of people, referring to artists as well as artisans. In fact, anyone who produced or sold something, or provided a service, in short anyone who worked for a living, was included in the category. The master artisans who produced prayer beads were considered as esnaf, as were the watermen who roamed the streets bare-foot crying "abates love's fire" as they freely distributed curative water. Members of the old fire squads entered the esnaf category as did porters. Peddlers formed another part of the esnaf mosaic. These poor people who carried their heavy load, walking the streets of istanbul often bare foot and dressed in rags, originated from the provinces. This book is not a historical research on the esnaf. It is a series of portraits gathered from the cinders of Ottoman social history‎

‎BÉRAUD-VILLARS (Jean).‎

"Publications of music is an enlightened part of our history of music. The subject was not considered as a whole, various important writings appeared on magazines stayed scattered, and the dpcuments were not collected. This book is the first step taken on this subject. The publication houses which mostly cannot be remembered in our days our presented for interests in this book depending on the notescores and other documents. And so, the untrue argument stating that the first publications of Turkish music were realized by the minorities is falsified and the line of progress of the Turkish music publications which began with Haci Emin Efendi in 1876, is put together the first time according to the documents, in chronological order.". This is still the best reference for not only history of Turkish / Ottoman classical music publications, but also collectible sheet musics.‎

‎Four centuries of diplomatic and economic relations between Turkey & the Netherlands, (1612-2012). In memory of Cornelius Haga. [With a CD].‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). Sealed. In English. 319, [5] p., color and b/w ills. Four centuries of diplomatic and economic relations between Turkey & the Netherlands, (1612-2012). In memory of Cornelius Haga. [With a CD]. This book (as well as the attached Istanbul Memoirs of the First Dutch Ambassador Cornelius Haga and the Ottoman Empire¿s official records and his Register Book about his activites in Istanbul) is a very timely contribution to the field, which once again illustrates the importance of studying the Ottoman history as world history. Halil Inalcik, Bilkent University. This book provides a fresh interpretation of the historical relations between these two important powers and also Turkey-Europe relations. In the foreword, Halil INALCIK, a prominent global historian, underlines the joint Ottoman-Dutch role in shaping the European and the World history. In the following chapter, Levent KIRVAL focuses on the history of the economic and political relations between Turkey and the European powers, and he particularly focuses on the economic and cultural interactions between the Turks and the Europeans. Subsequently, Bülent ARI, first gives brief information about the phases of Dutch revolt which started in 1567 against the Spanish oppression and then evaluates the political atmosphere of the period and the conflicts between the European states. Next, Mustafa GÜLEC evaluates the interpretations of various scholars concerning the early Ottoman-Dutch relations and gives an overall atmosphere of the commercial relations of individual entrepreneurs before the grant of Dutch capitulations. Followingly, Mehmet BULUT focuses on the commercial activities in the Mediterranean in the 17th and 18th century. Consequently, Mehmet TÜTÜNCÜ has an interesting chapter under the title "Grand Dutch Admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter¿s Mediterranean Expedition and the Peace Treaties He Concluded in 1662 with Ottoman Algeria". With CD entitled "Memoir and Register Book of Cornelis Haga First Dutch Ambassador in Istanbul".‎

‎The Carians overseas: Egypt - Iran - Israel.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 325 p., color ills. The Carians overseas: Egypt - Iran - Israel. THE CARIANS OVERSEAS is a documentary project, which follows the traces and documents the remains of the Carians, who, starting from the 10th BC, have worked in Egypt, Iran and Israel either as mercenaries or stonemasons. Being among the first settlers of the region of Southwest Anatolia, the Carians raised the world's first women admirals Artemisia I and Artemisia II, bequeathed us the Maussolleion, the monumental tomb of King Mausolus, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, offered the word "mausoleum" to world literature and preserved their culture and traditions for thousands of years. Based on the geographical features of their land, they lived either on the mainland, the islands or in locations overseas. They were known as good soldiers, fearless sailors and pirates with advanced warrior skills. Ancient Egyptian sources describe the Carians, who went to Egypt to work, as "men of bronze coming from the sea". According to Herodotus of Halicarnassus, the Carians had created the tradition of fixing a handle to a shield, fastening a crest and a tassel on the helmet and adorning and painting the shield. In ancient Persian sources, the Carians are referred to as people serving in the Persian army and navy, who were, besides their warrior character, skilled stonemasons, artisans, craftsmen and qualified in handling heavy goods. Being one of the most interesting civilizations of Anatolia, the Carians have proved their existence in the countries they have been, by inscribing their initials on stones in the Carian language and thus leaving important information regarding the places where they have lived, camped as well as their expedition routes. Following the traces of the Carians in Egypt, Iran and Israel and documenting their remains in museums and archaeological sites despite great difficulty, THE CARIANS OVERSEAS is an important source, for both the information it contributes to Carian archaeology and the research stories in its content.‎

‎Abdülhamid II and the Muslim world.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [xii], 398 p. Abdülhamid II and the Muslim world. "Abdulhamid II is no doubt one of the most controversial Ottoman Sultans in history. A massive literature continues to florish about him and his policy of pan-Islamism. Sometimes permeated by biased and subjective approaches, this literature is increasingly deminated by more balanced and objective accounts depicting a more realistic image of the Sultan ed the developments of his reign. The present book represents a fine example of the latter group of studies. It contains a well-documented anlysis of the policies of Abdulhamid II, particularly pan-Islamism, with due regard to the international political environment and the intellectual movements surrounding the idea of Islamic unity and solidarity.".‎

‎Istanbul: Between the Global and the Local (World Social Change)‎

‎8vo, br. ed. This groundbreaking volume investigates the processes of globalization in Istanbul, Istanbul usually is identified as a battleground between East and West, Islam and secularism. Yet the authors argue that beyond these clichés lies a complex reality as Istanbulites simultaneously try to accommodate, understand, challenge, and shape the sweeping transformations that globalization has brought to their city. Explaining the course of the conflicts and the compromises involved in maintaining a precarious urbanity, this theoretically informed volume focuses on fields of struggle ranging from politics to heritage, humor to music, public space to housing.‎
