[LESKOVIKLI] HAYREDDIN NEDIM [GÖÇEN], (1867-1942).
Bir elçinin tarihçe-i sefareti, 1207-1208 (Tarih-i Osmani Encümeni Külliyati, Aded: 3).
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary black cloth bdg. Modern Turkish lettered gilt on spine. Little stains on top of the first pages. A clean copy otherwise. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script. 112 p. Mustafa Rasih Pasha who was one of the important figures of Babiali at the time of III. Selim was sent to the Russia as an ambassador after treaty of Jassy. There are sefâretnâme and arîza about Rasih Pasha's embassy. The works written by Ottoman ambassadors or their assistances about their journeys are called sefâretnâme. The embassy travel and Russian impressions have been transferred into sefâretnâme related to Rasih Pasha's Russian embassy. Rasih Pasha described the social, economic, military, administrative and economic aspects of Russia in detail which are not explained in sefâretnâme in his arîza. These works composed after Rasih Pasha's embassy to Russia have involved very important informations about Russian Empire at the end of XVIII. Century. It is seen that the development of Russia during I. Petro reached to the top towards the end of XVIII. Century time of the II. Catherine. III. Selim as an Ottoman King made use of the arîza written on Russian during his reconstruction movement known as Nizam-i Cedit movement. This book includes memoirs of embassy of Mustafa Rasih Pasha in Russia. Hegira: 1333 = Gregorian: 1917. First Edition. Özege 2277.; TBTK 11603.; 6 copies in OCLC: 21790420.

[MAJOR] HALIT ZIYA [TÜRKKAN] (?), (Turkish cartographer, scientist, specialist of cadaster), (1886-1966).
[MANUSCRIPT HAND-COLOURED MAP OF SYRIA - PALESTINE - TRANSJORDAN] Suriye - Filistin - Transjordan.
Very Good Turkish Original manuscript color map of Middle East including Syria, Palestine and Transjordan. Signed by cartographer. 28x20 cm. In Turkish (with Latin letters). The Mapping Department, which moved to Ankara from Istanbul after the Independence War, settled in the Attar Basi Khan in Koyunpazari and the press section also started its studies in the building which is the Art School in Ulus today. In 1924, the department, which is still inside the General Directorate Garrison, moved to the hut-shaped buildings with single floor between the Military Sewinghouse and the General Directorate. On the other hand, the production of maps and plans, which were to be used in development services carried out in parallel to the revolutions starting with the declaration of the Republic and following each other, was considered to be based on a legal arrangement. Because of the necessity of an urgent legal arrangement, the bill of law concerning to the General Directorate of Mapping, whose preparations were initiated by Lieut. Gen. M. Sevki (Ölçer) who knew the importance of the subject, was sent to the Ministry of Defense at the beginning of 1925. After the approval of Ministry of Defense, the bill, which was sent to the Prime Ministry, was discussed in the Council of Ministers and presented to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. As a result; the Mapping Department was re-organized as the General Directorate of Mapping affiliated with the Ministry of Defense with the law bearing the number 657 on May 2, 1925 in order to do all mapping works and meet the needs of maps and plans of all ministries, institutions and organizations. [.] The first application of photogrammetry was made in Kayas, Ankara with the Wild Autograph plotting apparatus which was purchased in that year. Captain Ömer Kadri and Captain Niyazi came back from their photogrammetry education in Germany. Major Halit and Major Nüzhet were sent to France for photogrammetry education and Captain Ishak and Captain Bahri were sent to Germany. Captain Ahmet (Denkmen) and Captain Ömer Kadri attended the Congress of Photogrammetry assembled in Berlin. (Source: The Illustrated History Of Turkish Cartography). Halid Ziya was born in Izmir, Tire. He went to Istanbul and continued to Hendese-i Mülkiye and Engineer Mekteb-i Âlîsi for seven years. After starting with "Aydin Province Umur-i Nafia Third Class Engineering", Halid Ziya Bey, who continued to work as a deputy chief engineer on 14 March 1910, left Aydin and returned to Istanbul after continuing this duty for about six and a half months. As a teacher, he taught Accounting, Algebra, Geometry, and Topography at Halkali Ziraat Mekteb-i Âlîsi and Darussafaka. Halid Ziya Bey, who was appointed as a teacher of Hendese and Cosmography in Kabatas High School, started to practice the profession of engineering and cadastral, which was his main specialty in 1327. After the First World War, the Istanbul Government started its activities in order to capture and neutralize Halid Ziya Bey and his friends. Upon the harsh measures taken, Halid Ziya Bey had to live as a fugitive in the Hasirci Mountains of Eskisehir for a while with the armed force attached to him. Halid Ziya Bey, who was involved in the movement in Anatolia until the end of the National Liberation Struggle, returned to his engineering duty after the proclamation of the Republic and was included in the cadastral works again. In 1925, Halid Ziya Bey was appointed as the Head of the Science Committee of the new cadastre organization. He wrote 5 books on cadastre, photogrammetry, trigonometry, and cadastral tools in 1928 and 1929. In addition, as a result of personal work in 1928, the road between the provincial division of the Republic of Turkey with cities has prepared a comprehensive map to show up in the forest and mining. [MAP - OTTOMAN ARMY].
Iraq Kuwait and Iran.Istanbul Erkan-i Harbiye-i Umumiye 1331 Rumi = 1915 CE. Colour-lithographed map of Iraq Kuwait and southwestern Iran 65.5 x 66 cm in black brown blue and green at a scale of 1:1000000 dissected into 12 sections and mounted on contemporary cloth.
First edition of the first accurate Ottoman general map of Central and Southern Iraq Kuwait and Khuzestan southwestern Iran; the authoritative map used by the Ottoman army for strategic planning during the "Mesopotamia Campaign" where Ottoman-German forces mounted a unexpectedly strong resistance to Britain's invasion of Iraq in World War I. Examples of the present map were used by Ottoman commanders who oversaw the successful Ottoman-German defence of Baghdad at the Battle of Ctesiphon 22-25 Nov. 1915 as well as the capture of the main British army at the Siege of Kut-al-Amara 7 Dec. 1915-29 April 1916. It shows the tip of the Gulf and the Tigris and Euphrates vallies including Kuwait most of Iraq and Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran. Mountain ridges are rendered in brown with rivers and marshes in blue permanent bodies of water in green and parallels and meridians at every degree ranging from about 43.5 to 49.5°E longitude and 29 to 34°N latitude. With the text entirely in Ottoman Turkish the map is based on the British War Office's "Lower Mesopotamia between Baghdad and the Persian Gulf" 1911 which was itself in part based on Ottoman sources. Both maps were dramatically superior in all respects to previous efforts forming the culmination of over three generations of reconnaissance capped by critical late-breaking discoveries. Some light stains in the margins and the lower-right quadrant but generally in good condition. Very rare. unknown

[MEHMET] EMIN [HALID] ONAT, (1908-1961).
[MODERN TURKISH ARCHITECTURE] [Autograph letter signed Emin Onat].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph handwritten letter by Mehmet Emin Onat. (30x21 cm). In Ottoman script. 2 p. Full. Letterhead of 'Teknik Üniversite Istanbul; Ev: Kadiköy'. It starts as 'Sevgili Lemancigim'. Emin Onat was a Turkish architect and former rector of Istanbul Technical University. Onat was born in Istanbul in 1908. He entered Istanbul Technical University in 1926. Then, he was sent to Zurich Technical University. Onat was one of the architects of Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. His architectural style was formed at ETH. Emin Onat learned to experiment, interpret and search for modernism from his teacher Otto R. Salvisberg, a well-known, experienced practicing architect. Despite getting under the Anitkabir's shadow, he has a unique architectural style. Onat's architectural talent blossomed at Zurich Technical University, where one of his fellow students was Otto Rudolf Salvisberg, who later went to become one of the best architects of his time. Onat completed his studies in Zurich and returned to Turkey in 1934. Within a year, he had become an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture at the School of Engineering. He held the post for a couple of years that were marked by strenuous relations with the other members of the faculty, owing to the novel methods of teaching Onat introduced. In 1944 Onat became the first dean of the newly established Faculty of Architecture at the Istanbul Technical University. Onat rose further into the echelons of the architectural world in 1946, when he was given an honorary membership of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In 1951 he became the Rector of the Istanbul Technical University, a post he held for two years. The Hannover Technical University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1956. In 1957 he returned to the university. His return lasted only three years as on 21 October 1960 he and 147 faculty members were ousted from the university. Onat designed several impressive buildings during his career. These include the Istanbul Theatre and Conservatory, Istanbul Palace of Justice (1949), Kavaklidere Cenap, Presidential Secretariat in Cankaya and the General Directorate of Security. Onat had a predilection for local architectural elements. He fused traditional designs into his own designs, striving to attain organic unity. Onat's other designs are the Istanbul Lounges, Uludag Sanatorium, Bursa Governor's Mansion and IBM Headquarters in Istanbul. (Source: Wikipedia). Rare.

[MESSRS I. CAMONDO ET CIE ON BEHALF OF [PROBABLY] MOISE DE CAMONDO, (Ottoman Empire-born French banker, art collector and philan
Autograph letter signed.
Constantinople: I. Camondo & Cie Constantinople Letterhead. 17 Janvier 1901 1901. No Binding. Very Good. Original autograph letter signed ALS by P.pon "We hereby declare that Ms. L. Cassinelli occupied our house located in Pera Rue Hodja Ali No 19. On December 1 1887 and left him on September 30 1899. That during all time he did not pay me the tax. P. pon de la succession de feu le Comte A. de Camondo. i.e. On behalf of the succession of Count Abraham Salomon Camondo 1781-1873. Probably it's signed by his advocate of Moise de Camondo. Recipient is not defined. Letter indicates one of Camondo family's houses in Pera Constantinople. 265x21 cm. Completely in French. 14 lines. On a paper watermarked "William Brown & Co. London". William Brown and Co. were located in London in this 'St. Mary Axe and 40 to 41 Old Broad Street London E.C.' address according to Grace's guide to British industrial industry; they worked on 'Lithographic and Letterpress Printers'. 1887 Registered as a Limited Company. Count Moïse de Camondo 1860-1935 was an Ottoman Empire-born French banker and art collector. He was a member of the prominent Camondo family. As a child Camondo moved with his family from their home in Constantinople Ottoman Empire to Paris around 1869 where he grew up and continued the career of his father Nissim de Camondo 1830-1889 as a banker. He was born into a Sephardic Jewish family that owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire established in France since 1869. Starting in 1911 he completely rebuilt the family's Parisian mansion on the Parc Monceau in order to house his collection of 18th-century French furniture and artwork. Working closely with the architect René Sergent he created a palatial home conforming to certain 18th-century traditions even planning the room dimensions to match exactly the objects in his collection. The entryway is inspired by the Petit Trianon of Versailles. The home includes a kosher kitchen with separate sections for meat and dairy. The dining room includes a beautifully-carved green marble fountain in the shape of a shell with a dolphin spigot for the ritual washing of hands before eating a meal. Some highlights of his collection include a French silver service that had been ordered by Russian Empress Catherine the Great a set of Buffon porcelain with exact reproductions of ornithological drawings from the Sèvres manufacturer and perhaps the only existing complete set of Gobelin royal tapestry sketches. He married Irène Cahen d'Anvers daughter of Louis Cahen d'Anvers in 1891. They separated in August 1897 after her affair with de Camondo's stable master Count Charles Sampieri whom she would later marry and divorce. The children Nissim and Beatrice remained with de Camondo. The mansion was completed in 1914 but his son did not reside there very long as he rejoined the French Army to fight in The Great War. It had been de Camondo's great hope that his son whom he adored would take over the family empire. Following Nissim's death in 1917 de Camondo closed all banking activities. He largely withdrew from society and devoted himself primarily to his collection and to hosting dinners for a club of gourmets at regular intervals. Camondo died in 1935 and the museum opened the following year. He donated the home to Paris's Decorative Arts society as a museum Musée Nissim de Camondo in honor of the loss of his son Nissim in World War I. In addition to the collection the meticulously-restored service areas elevator and woodwork of the mansion are noteworthy. During the German occupation of France during World War II his daughter Béatrice his son-of-law Léon Reinach and their children Fanny and Bertrand were deported from France and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. As a result the de Camondo family died out. <br/> <br/> I. Camondo & Cie, Constantinople Letterhead., 17 Janvier 1901 unknown
