[World War I – Ottoman Empire – Turkish War of Independence] "HC." H. C.
Letters Home from an American Professor Working in the Ottoman Empire in the Aftermath of World War I.
Constantinople New York City and others 1922. Four letters totaling seven pages. Folded else fine. A small collection of letters from “H.C.†who seems to have been an American university professor in Constantinople to his “Darling Clementine†back home. H.C. may have taught at Robert College a Christian college founded in 1863 now a prestigious private highschool.<br /> <br /> It is not clear when H.C. first arrived in Constantinople but he had been there for several years already by the time the letters begin and was certainly there at a critical point in its history. He writes in 1918 shortly after the arrival of occupying forces:<br /> <br /> “conditions are still very bad in town I long to see the suffering diminished. Some say it will be months yet. Sometimes now there is no coal no electric light no bread no water. Can you imagine the state of an Oriental city under such conditions We have had are still having trouble about light water-supply but we have steam heat plenty of food of a plain kind. We all keep well. . I hear that an American Red Cross boat will arrive next week I am eager to see its passengers. We may have a chance to leave on it but I can not see my way clear to skip because our faculty is depleted ever since the exodus at the time of the panic long ago when Miss Lyon left. . We have a good college now – boarders about 90 in the College-department – and many day scholars but lately the Spanish fever the lack of tram-car service has kept many students away. As soon as our cousins supply coal we hope for improvement. The Ententists are spreading over the city thoroughly quietly – like oil. It is a delight to see so many manly looking officers after the ones we have had here for years. There is a spiritual look in the eyes of the present occupants a look of bull-dog determination.†December 6 1918<br /> <br /> H.C. enjoys a “real yachting cruise†on his way back to Constantinople from the States in 1921 tells Clementine about his plans for his commencement speech in 1922 and describes a college reception in New York City which “General Custer’s wife†Elizabeth Bacon Custer attended undated letter. Meanwhile Turkey was engaged in its brutal war for independence. At some point H.C. befriended Electra—probably a Greek woman—whom he sent along to visit Clementine in part to help Electra cope with her traumatic experiences during the war:<br /> <br /> “As you will recall my young friend’s father was executed – tho innocent – with about 70 others. At first E. bore this with wonderful fortitude but after Xmas a reaction set in naturally enough. She developed morbidness a hyper sensitive attitude toward all of my looks words – probably a condition due to shock. I am confident that travel new scenes interests will bring her back to her old self your wholesome household will chase all gloom away. A doctor told her lately that she has hysteria that she must think of cheerful things only. I tell you this thinking that you might keep her from talking about the nation that does cruel things. The truth is that cruelty is pretty generally distributed a judicial mind finds it difficult to pick choose. Some nations get the public ear so the pot can call the kettle black!†June 6 1922<br /> <br /> Indeed both sides of the Greco-Turkish war—part of the larger Turkish campaign for independence—massacred each other. However only the Turkish contingent’s actions have been argued by historians to constitute ethnic cleansing or genocide.<br /> <br /> Of interest to historians of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey post-World War I especially Americans’ experience thereof. unknown

[YILDIZ PALACE MAP ON SILK HANDKERCHIEF FOR THE SOCIAL AIDS IN THE PERIOD OF SULTAN ABDULHAMID 2].
[THE GRECO-TURKISH WAR MAP ON A SILK HANDKERCHIEF MADE IN YILDIZ PALACE] Devlet-i Aliyye ve Yunan Muhaberebesi. Engraved map of the Greco-Turkish War in 1897 on a silk handkerchief made in Yildiz Palace in the period of Sultan Abdulhamid II.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original engraved map on the silk handkerchief made in Yildiz Palace for the 'Iane Sergisi' [i.e. Exhibition of the Social Assistance] in the period of Sultan Abdülhamid II. In its decorative frame. Frame size: 53,5x53,5 cm; map size: 38x38 cm. In Ottoman script. Scale: 1/600.000. Several minimal splits, minor foxing, and slight stains on cloth. Otherwise in good condition. A rare and decorative 1897 silk handkerchief map of the Greco-Turkish War in 1897, which was the only war in which the Ottoman army was victorious during the reign of Abdulhamid 2, is a fine example of Ottoman / Turkish cartographic textiles made in Ottoman court (Yildiz Palace textile workshops). This beautiful map depicts an attractive war scene from the 1313 Greek War on the upper half, and it's engraved a map of Balkan & Greek lands on its lower half. War painting has 'Melona' signature in Ottoman script. The map shows Thessaloniki [i.e. Salonica] Bay on the west; Yanya [i.e. Ioanna] Vilayat on the east; lands of Greece, Galos Bay, Uzi Strait on the south and Dimetoka and Avalonia areas in the Serefiye, Ergiri sanjaks on the north in its period. Written on the map, "Baht-i himâye-yi feyzvâne-i cenâb-i hilâfetpenâhide evlad-i süheda ve mecrûhin-i asakir-i sâhâne", [i.e. It was printed for the "Iane Sergisi" (i.e. The Social Help Exhibition) in the high memory of our soldiers who were martyred and veterans in the Greek War under the patronage of the Sultan.]. The Greco-Turkish War of 1897, also called the Thirty Days' War and known in Greece as the Black '97 (Mauro '97), or the Unfortunate War (Atychis polemos), was a war fought between the Kingdom of Greece and the Ottoman Empire. Its immediate cause was the question over the status of the Ottoman province of Crete, whose Greek majority long-desired union with Greece. Despite the Ottoman victory on the field, an autonomous Cretan State under Ottoman suzerainty was established the following year (as a result of the intervention of the Great Powers after the war), with Prince George of Greece and Denmark as its first High Commissioner. This was the first war effort in which the military and political personnel of Greece were put to test since the Greek War of Independence in 1821. For the Ottoman Empire, this was also the first war effort in which the reorganized military personnel were put to test. The Ottoman army was under the guidance of a German military mission led by Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz, who had reorganized it after the defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). The conflict proved Greece was wholly unprepared for war. Plans, fortifications and weapons were non-existent, the mass of the officer corps was unsuited to its tasks, and training was inadequate. As a result, the numerically superior, better organized, equipped and led Ottoman forces pushed the Greek forces south out of Thessaly. Almost all of the aids made to the families or disabled people of those who were martyred in the 1897 Ottoman-Greek War (such as printing this map) were made within the framework of the donations of "Evlâd-i Süheda and Malûlîn-i Guzât-i Asâkir-i Sahane". People and citizens of all classes and beliefs, including members of the Ottoman court, ministers, bureaucrats, civil servants, merchants and tradesmen, participated in this aid campaign at the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century. Not in OCLC.

[Zafernâme-i Sabit]:
Selim Giray'in bir gazâsinadir.
– Literatur: Seyfettin Özege: Eski harflerle bas?lm?s? A guide to Turkish treaties, 1920-1964.
Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [xii], 248 p. The first edition of the present book was published in Turkish in 1962, as a documentary study which was intended to serve as a basis for further studies on the laa of Turkish treaties. Reviewing that edition, Professor Seha L. Meray of the Faculty of Political Science, University of Ankara, emphasized the need for a publication of this kind in a foreign language. Such a publication, wrote the distinguished reviewer, would be useful to foreign scholars and diplomats who are interested in Turkey's international relations. This book has been prepared to meet this suggestion.

A. H. SAYCE.
The Hittites: The story of a forgotten Empire.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16,5 cm). In English. 94 p. The Hittites: The story of a forgotten Empire. Recent discoveries have retorted the critic's objections upon himself. It is not the Biblical writer but the modern author who is now proved to have been unacquainted with the contemporaneous history of the time. The Hittites were a very real power. Not very many centuries before the age of Elisha they had contested the empire of Western Asia with the Egyptians, and though their power had waned in the days of Jehoram they were still formidable enemies and useful allies. They were still worthy of comparison with the divided kingdom of Egypt, and infinitely more powerful than that of Judah.
