Ergüven was a Turkish poet, writer, essayist. He was born in Avanos, died in Sweden. He went to Sweden in 1967; He studied Swedish between 1968 and 1971. After working as a translator between 1972 and 1977, he worked as a lecturer, Turcologist, and researcher at Stockholm University between 1978 and 1990, and retired in 1990. He published poetry, translation, analysis, research, criticism, essay, and scientific articles in various publications. He was convicted for the claim of insulting religion in his novel titled 'Yasak Tümceler' [i.e. Forbidden Sentences].

This book explores the life and ideas of the eminent liberal journalist, Ahmed Emin (Yalman)'s changing perceptions of the "other" in the Armistice Period (1918-1923) and beyond. Throughout the work, Ahmed Emin's perception of non-Muslim Ottomans, non-Turkish Muslims and the Western powers, as well as the changes in these perceptions are all analyzed through both qualitative and quantitative methods and based on content analysis. In addition to his editorials, published in the two newspapers Vakit and Vatan in Istanbul during the Armistice Period, his narration and reconstruction of the past events in his memoirs (one of which was composed in English) are also included in the comparative analysis. The work shows that, along with the continuous elements in his writings, such as his almost unchanging liberal-Westernist ideology, Ahmed Emin's opinions were subject to change in accordance with changes on the ground and shifts in power configurations.

Istanbul: Matbaa-i Âmire. 1288 AH 1871. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. An extremely rare first edition of the earliest account of Muslims in Brazil documenting the second voyage to the American continent ever undertaken by the Ottoman navy and by any Muslim seafarers or travelers following Piri Reis in the 15th-16th century. The travel log that Abdurrahman Efendi wrote in Arabic after he came back to Istanbul from Brazil was translated into Ottoman Turkish by Antepli Mehmed Serif Efendi and published in 1288/1871. In this account the transit to Brazil is mentioned briefly since the writer's main focus was not on the voyage but rather on the situation of the Muslims in Brazil a group formed mostly by African slaves and their descendants who were enslaved by Portuguese and British colonists. Abdurrahman Efendi describes the lessons he gave a booklet in Portuguese with Arabic letters he prepared to outline the basics of Islam the city of Rio de Janeiro the plantations near the port some tropic fruits in Brazil vast forests from Brazil to the south of the continent the city of Ebaiye i.e. Salvador and Marnempugo diamond mining area called Lugabiryanti besides the daily life of Muslims in 19th-century Brazil such as the students' houses of worship tribal chiefs whom they call "Fa" or "Imam" etc. His Brazil travel log gives his route of return and the main points he visited like Lisbon Cordoba Gibraltar Tanca Jeddah and Mecca on his way back to Istanbul. With regard to this account two Ottoman warships bearing the names "Bursa" and "Izmir" left Istanbul en route to their new duty station in the Persian Gulf on 12 September 1865. The ships passed through the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar into the Atlantic Ocean planning to follow the African shoreline to Basra. After visiting Cadiz and the Canary Islands they set sail from the Cape Verde Islands but on 19 May they encountered a storm that threw them in the Atlantic and this 17-day voyage of uncertainty ultimately brought them to the shores of Brazil where they laid anchor at the port of Rio de Janeiro. Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. Foolscap 8vo. (17,5 x 12 cm). In Turkish. 128 p., one plate of Fatma Hanim who was the deceased wife of the poet to whom the poem is dedicated. First edition in Latin letters of this second book of poems of "Sâîr-i Âzâm" [i.e. The great poet], which is considered one of the greatest works of Turkish literature, and was published with appendices and a dictionary at the end, along with its transcription by doctor and politician Sadi Irmak (1904-1990). First published in 1885 in Arabic letters, Makber is a poem written by Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan on the loss of his wife, Fatima Hanim. It took its place as one of the most important examples of the newly established Ottoman / Turkish Poetry in Western style in those years, and has been a source of inspiration for many Turkish poets even decades after it was written. It is the first poem that brings the metaphysical fear of death to Turkish poetry. In 1878, his first brush with controversy occurred on the publishing of his play Nesteren in Paris. It depicted a rebellion against a tyrannical ruler, and the actual ruler of Turkey at that time, Sultan Abdul Hamid II was so upset by it that he had the playwright fired from his government job. He was appointed in 1881 to Poti, Georgia, in 1882 to Volos, Greece and in 1883 to Bombay, India. Due to illness of his wife, the family left India in 1885. On their way to Istanbul, his wife Fatma died in Beirut, then in the Ottoman Empire. She was buried there that inspired him to write his poem Makber (The Grave), which later became very popular.
