‎Field seasons 2001-2003 of the Tarsus-Gözlükule. (Inderdisciplinary Research Project).‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 21,5 cm). [x], 217, [1] p. In English. Color and b/w ills. This publication is the first result of investigations that began as conversations and contemplations with my long-term advisor and mentor Machteld J. Mellink during a visit toTarsus in May 1998. The occasion for the visit was the 20th Annual Excavation Results Symposium hosted by the Ministry of Culture, General Directorate of Monuments and Museums. The idea of preparing for a Bogaziçi University Expedition to Cilicia took shape as one of many projects contrived at our annual sojourn in ancient Myndos (Gümüslük) with Daryo Mizrahi and Selçuk Esenbel. The encouragement and sustained support of Selçuk Esenbel, Professor of History and at the time Chair of the History Deparment at B. U. to initiate such a project laid the ground for all future work.‎

‎[The way of the nation] Yana milli yul.= Yana millî yol. Jahrg. 4. Januar 1932. No: 1. Chefredakteur und Herausgeber: Ayas Ishaki.‎

‎Very Good Tatar Paperback. A little split on cover. A good copy. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 18 cm). In Tatar (with Arabic letters). 41 p. Yana milli yul.= Yana millî yol. Jahrg. 4. Januar 1932. No: 1. Chefredakteur und Herausgeber: Ayas Ishaki. Ishaki was a leading figure of the Tatar national movement, author, journalist, publisher and politician. Gayaz Ishaki was born in 1878 in the village of Yaushirma near Kazan to a Mishar Tatar family. He was home-schooled by his father at an early age and was sent to study in a madrasah (religious school). He continued his education in the Russian-Tatar teachers' school (1898-1902). Gayaz Ishaki moved to Kazan in 1904, where he became acquainted to socialists and adopted some of their views. He became involved in revolutionary activities and subsequently was arrested and sent to a prison near the city of Arkhangelsk in northern Russia in 1907. After the February revolution of 1917 he was involved in activities aimed at achieving cultural autonomy for the Volga Tatars and other Turkic peoples of Russia. As a result of his activities, the Soviet authorities started a campaign of harassment and persecution against him and his associates. He was forced to emigrate in 1920. After settling in Germany, Gayaz Iskhaki started publishing a Tatar-language magazine "Milli Yul" ("the Way of the nation") in 1928. In 1939 the magazine was closed and Iskhaki decided to immigrate to Turkey. After World War II he became involved in political activities. At this stage his main goal was the restoration of the Tatar nationhood lost in 1552 when the Kazan Khanate was defeated and occupied by the Moscow Principality. Throughout his life Gayaz Iskhaki traveled to Poland, Germany, Japan, China and Turkey where he tried to establish Tatar-language press and unite disparate Tatar emigree communities. Gayaz Iskhaki died in 1954 and was buried in Edirnekapi graveyard of Istanbul.‎

‎The Sisli Mosque. Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Photography Collection.= Sisli Camii. Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi Fotograf Koleksiyonu. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Large 8vo. (24 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 73 p., color and b/w ills. The Sisli Mosque. Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Photography Collection.= Sisli Camii. Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi Fotograf Koleksiyonu. [Exhibition catalogue]. The photographs collected constituted the kernel of the Foundation's Photography Collection. Since the day the Istanbul Research Institute was opened in 2007, this collection grew with acquisitions and other donations, reaching approximately 130,000 photographs, with Istanbul as their main focus and covering a period from the 1850s to the 1960s. Years of classification and identification have finally brought us to the point of being able to create new projects. As a result, we have planned the Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection Series, which will consist of thematically structured groups of photographs. This album-book is the first publication in this series, discussing the architectural journey of Sisli Mosque, the first monumental religious building of Republican Istanbul. One of the reasons we have chosen Sisli Mosque is that this is the first mosque in the city's history that was built not under the aegis of the sultan or statesmen but through the collective effort of the people. Another reason is that Sisli Mosque, unlike the architectural thought and production of the 1940s, which was shaped throughout the country by winds of modernism, reflected the classical Ottoman style and has been accepted as a stylistic example, providing a prototype for neo-Ottoman mosques built in its wake. In addition, the photographs of the mosque we publish here have almost exclusively been taken by Foto Sabah, one of the leading studios of the period, which indicates that the process of the mosque's construction between 1947 and 1949 was deliberately documented at regular intervals. In those years when documentation and preservation was not habitual and architectural work was seldom archived, such an effort is noteworthy. We hope that this title and the album-books we will publish will help researchers in analyzing Istanbul's historical identity.‎

‎Piyale Pasa Camii 2005-2007 restorasyonu.‎

‎New New Turkish Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (32 x 25 cm). In Turkish. 297 p., color and b/w ills. Piyale Pasa Camii 2005-2007 restorasyonu. Restoration of the Piyale Pasa Mosque in Istanbul. "Piyale Pasha Moque and its Social Complex were construction cluster constructed by Architect Sinan upon the request of Kaptan-i Derya Piyale Pasa in 1573. It was constructed as a social complex consisting of mosque, education center, lodge, mausoleum, special part, ottoman elementary-primary school, market and Ottoman bath; however, only the mosque and mausoleum reached to today. The mosque in the 30,5x19,5 sizes and with rectangular plan is located on two big granite columns and arches and covered with six domes each of which has a diameter for 9 meters. Even if it is considered within Pre-Ottoman Grand Mosque in Anatolia with its six domes, Piyale Pasha Mosque is thought to be an example which was developed and made thinner through the new method of Sinan. One of the very rare tile mihrabs of classical period takes place in the marble minbar mosque. The sole minaret of the mosque which does not comply with the architectural traditions of the period with its domes, arches, entrance portico takes place right on the entrance and it has a single balcony. The mosque was ruined because of the surrounding dense structuring activities, omissions, and natural disasters such as fires and earthquakes in time. All cement-based joints and plasters were rasped and therefore, original hand-drawn works were found out and protected within the scope of the restoration works. Upon the removal of the screed layers on the top cover, the original dome figures were revealed. The work was reached to its original identity and unlicensed constructions in the parcel were demolished and environmental planning was realized at the end of the restoration.".‎

‎Ottoman Arcadia: The Hamidian Expedition to the land of tribal roots (1886). Ömer M. Koç Collection.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 180 p., b/w and color ills. The English volume of the exhibition. In conjunction with the exhibition, the book examines the locations where the Ottoman Empire was founded, and the meanings attributed to these in the past and in the nineteenth century. It includes articles by expert researchers and academicians, Selim Deringil, T.G. Otte, Sinan Kuneralp, Ahmet Ersoy (co-curator), Deniz Türker (co-curator), Beatrice St. Laurent, Resat Kasaba, and Berin Gölönü. In the articles, they study the foundation myths, the relationship among history, memory and representation through nomads of Anatolia, monuments, and architectural works in the earliest settlements of the empire as well as late 19th century European-Ottoman diplomatic relations. In addition, many of the photographs and artifacts from the exhibition can be found as high-quality reproductions in an addendum in the book. Ottoman Arcadia focuses on three volumes of photography albums commissioned by Sultan Abdulhamid II via an official expedition in 1886, which were gifted to the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The original photographs bearing handwritten informative captions in Ottoman Turkish and French on them will be on display for the first time alongside with the documents, images, and publications from various collections. The album photographs document dramatic landscapes, towns, monuments of the early Ottoman settlements like Yenisehir, Sogut, Bozuyuk; and the first capital of the empire, Bursa. The native inhabitants of the region ¿particularly the last remaining members of the semi-nomadic Turkmen tribes (yörüks) are also recorded in the albums. Through the strong, persuasive capacity of photography, the exhibition reassert foundational myths and authenticate the remote tribal origins of the ottoman dynasty. ‎Tarihin merkezine seyahat: Fotograf ve Osmanli köklerinin yeniden kesfi (1886): Ömer M. Koç Koleksiyonu.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). Edition in Turkish. 176 p., b/w and color ills. The Turkish volume of the exhibition. Following the documentary traces of the 1886 Expedition, Ottoman Arcadia investigates the ways in which the layered deposit of memories attached to the land of Ottoman origins was reclaimed through the agency of photography.‎

‎100th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Constitution.= Ikinci Mesrutiyet'in ilaninin 100üncü yili.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Oblong 4to. (27 x 28 cm). In English and Turkish. 219 p., ills. The Ottoman Empire, which, for centuries, had successfully ruled nations and communities of diverse ethnic origins and religious denominations under the same administrative system, was entering an irrevocable process of disintegration at the turn of the 20th century. Struggling to take precautionary steps against the pressures of the "New Nation States" that originated from the Balkans, which were openly supported by Russia, England, Austria and Greece, Sultan Abdulhamid II announced -out of despair and the fait accomplihe faced- the proclamation of the Second Constitution on 24 July 1908 to protect his throne, for he justifiably believed this to be the only solution to prevent, or at least delay the complete disintegration of the Empire. Sultan Abdulhamid II, who by then was nearing the 32nd year of his reign, was convinced that this was the sole measure to be taken to keep under control the power "Young Turk" movement, which increasingly evolved into a stronger force under the auspices of the "Committee of Union and Progress", had over the large masses. It was, on the other hand, impossible for the restoration of the 1876 Constitution and the implementation of a Constitutional regime based on a newly established parliament by way of elections, to provide viable solutions to the grander problems of the Empire. The upheaval instigated by the Islamic faction waging war against the Committee of Union and Progress and the counter- revolution attempt, which has come to be known as the "31 March Incident", ended when the Third Army stationed in Salonica arrived in Istanbul and seized control of the govemment. The deposition of Sultan Abdulhamid II on 27 April 1909 and the subsequent enthronement of the 65-year-old Sultan Mehmed Resad V meant, evidently, that the government of the Empire was now in the hands of the leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress. In the ensuing years, the rigours of the Balkan War and World War I compelled the Committee members, who adopted "Liberty - Justice - Fraternity and Equality" ideals as their slogan, to relinquish their pluralistic and democratic stance and pursue a nationalistic discourse, which, in turn, accelerated the run towards the inevitable end. The purpose of the catalogue and the exhibition we designed in commemoration of "The 400th Anniversary of the Restoration ofthe Constitution" is to draw attention to a tumultuous period that had significant repercussions on the Republic years. It is rather intriguing how, from books and posters to memorabilia, and even quotidian objects, masses of diverse religions and races expressed their yearning for and expectations from a more democratic regime. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Sinan Kuneralp, Prof. Edhem Eldem, Dr. Sacit Kutlu, David Barchard, Paul Bessemer and Sukru Ilicak, who all contributed to the exhibition catalogue with their valuable articles; to Mehmet Akgul, Atom Damali, Oktar Kubat, Ugur Yegin, Ugur Goktasli, Orlando Kalumeno, Roni Margulies and Ekrem Gocay, who made it possible for the works in their private archives and collections to be published in the catalogue and displayed in the exhibition; to Sadberk Hamin Museum Director Hulya Bilgi and her team; and to project coordinator Bahattin Oztuncay, with whom we collaborated on the selection of items included in the exhibition and the catalogue.‎

From fresh perspectives in the light of current information, thought and theory about these works, the discourse of knowledge that surrounds a work of art and is continually adapted. ‎Hippodrom / At meydani. A stage for Istanbul's history.= Hippodrom / Atmeydani. Istanbul'un tarih sahnesi. [Exhibition catalogue]. 2 volumes set. Translators: Cem Akas, Jonathan Bardill, Kemal Atakay.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 25 cm). In total as set: 716 p., 1 folding plt. Very heavy volumes. B/w and color ills. In Turkish and English. The exhibition "Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: A Stage for Istanbul's History" takes the visitor on a tour of one of the major architectural achievements of Byzantine Constantinople. Images from the fifteenth and early sixteenth century show the structure of the Hippodrome to have been fairly well preserved at the time of the Ottoman conquest. The construction of Ottoman palaces and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, however, played a major role in the dismantling of the remains of the Hippodrome. Nevertheless, this large open space's association with horses was preserved. It became known as Atmeydani (Horse Square) during the Ottoman era and was used for playing the equestrian game cirit. The Ottomans and the sultans also continued to hold celebrations and public spectacles in the area. Visitors to the Hippodrome today can view its three surviving monuments-the masonry obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the Egyptian obelisk-but few can easily imagine the splendor and size of the original Hippodrome that stood for more than eleven centuries."The Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: Istanbul's Stage of History" exhibition almost rebuilds the magnificent Hippodrome decorated with exceptionally beautiful monuments and the Atmeydani of the Ottoman period, and examines the life surrounding them.‎

The second of the mini graduate symposium series organized by the Graduate Program in Settlement Archaeology of the Middle East Technical University was held on April 27th, 2007 at the Middle East Technical University. Studies on the archaeology, history, art history and geography of the Marmara Region were presented at this symposium which also provided a great opportunity to publish the second of the Settlement Archaeology Series. The symposium was not only incredibly diverse in terms of subject matter, but also the papers extended over a very long period of time. The Graduate Program in Settlement Archaeology will continue organizing and publishing these symposia bilingually in order to continue and increase exchange of ideas and data among young scholars in a dynamic atmosphere and hopefully encourage more graduate symposia in Turkey. In this way, the program hopes to foster self confidence in young scientists and emphasize the universality of scientific data.
