Shipkov and others. Mihail (Michael) Todorov Shipkov was born to a wealthy family in Bulgaria on January 1, 1911. His secondary education was at the prestigious American founded and Christian based Robert College on the European side of Istanbul, Turkey. His family had derived its wealth from extracting rose oil. With the coming of Communism in Bulgaria after World War Two, the family lost their wealth when their rose fields and factories were nationalized. Reportedly, Communist authorities confiscated 9,000 kilograms of rose oil. Fluent in English, Mihail Shipkov then became a translator at the American Legation in Sofia. It was the worst of political times in Bulgaria. The Cold War was hot: staff members of the American Legation were harassed, arrested, and some died under very suspicious circumstances. For example, in August 1949, Ivan Seculov, a Bulgarian translator employed by the American Legation, died after "falling" out of a four-story window three days after his arrest by the state security militia (secret police). One report has him committing suicide rather than being released from prison to work as a police agent. The truth might never be known. In 1949, the American Legation attempted to get Mihail Shipkov, then 39 years old, and his family exit visas to leave Bulgaria for the United States. The police (militia) opened an investigative file with the code name "????????" (Rodoviiat), translated as "Pink" - not referring to the color, but to his family's rose oil production. On Saturday, August 21, 1949, at 2:30 PM, Mihail Shipkov was arrested by the state security militia, after leaving the American Legation, and taken to the National Assembly building... This collection of essays represents a departure from the traditional perspective, recently questioned by many scholars, from which Ottoman history is usually written. Central to the establishment of Western domination over the 'East' is the writing of its history in terms of Western hegemony, above all in the case of the Ottoman Empire, which has been characterised as static, irrational and authoritarian in contrast with the dynamic, rational, democratic West. This book contrasts sharply with conventional studies of the Ottoman Empire, based on this European world-view, that focus on political military, and cultural institutions. Following a series of general theoretical discussions about Ottoman social structure, the contributors turn to case studies directed either to theoretical problems or to 'facts' which suggest new avenues of conceptualisation.

Includes 11 articles on the history of the school which gave an education in French. The Galata Sarayi, registered in Istanbul's records from the end of the 15th century onwards as a palace school; is the city¿s only non-religious institution that has survived unchanged until the present day. Beginning with its founding myth based on the meeting of Bayezid II and Gul Baba, the building complex bore the very same name, and in time lent it to the neighbourhood evolving around it as well. The Galata Sarayi complex, which is used to train qualified personnel to the Ottoman Palace and Army throughout its history, became a pioneering military school; offering elementary-grade, and medical education. It hosted innovative developments such as a French curriculum and Western standards in education after the mid-19th century. The Mekteb-i Sultani (Lycee Imperial Ottoman da Galata Serai), took shape as a professional European middle-school; through the close relations between Abdulaziz and the French Emperor Napoleon III, in a series of efforts formulated by Ali Pasha and Fuad Pasha, two influential Ottoman statesmen of the time. One of the first secular institutions, offering equal rights of education to the diverse peoples of the Ottoman Empire, Galatasaray saw considerable interest after opening and formed a new tradition of education after its first class graduated in 1871. In the last 150 years; as the Mekteb-i Sultani in the final Ottoman years and as the Galatasaray High School from 1923 onwards despite varying successes - the school became a symbolic institution and an elite identity for its students and alumni alike. Designed to share the inspiring memory of this public institution; the exhibit thus presents glimpses from the school¿s efforts, since 1868, to train skilled, qualified individuals. Edited by curator Izzeddin Calislar the exhibition catalogue consists articles that give a unique insight to Galatasaray High School by Emel Engin, Fethi Isfendiyaroglu, Seza Sinanlar Uslu, Gulsun Guvenli Vahdettin Engin, Koksal Bayraktar, Yildizhan Yayla, Tarkan Okcuoglu, Melih Sabanoglu and Izzeddin Calislar.
