‎GÖNÜL DÖNMEZ-COLIN‎

‎Women, Islam, and Cinema‎

‎Illustrated edition. 208 pages. 6.75x4.75x0.50 inches. "This is the first book to examine the troubled relationships between women, Islam and cinema. Film critic and author Gönül Dönmez-Colin explores the role of women as spectators, images and image constructors in the cinemas of the countries where Islam is the predominant religion, focusing on Iran and Turkey from the Middle East, drawing parallels from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the two Central Asian Republics of the former Soviet Union, and Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia, the prominently Muslim Asian countries with a challenging film industry. Some of the relevant films made in India by and for Muslim Indians are also explored. Dönmez-Colin examines prevalent cinematic archetypes, including the naïve country girl who is deceived and dishonoured, or the devious seductress who destroys the sanctity of marriage, and looks well at controversial elements such as screen rape, which, feminist film critics claim, caters to male voyeurism. She also discusses recurring themes, such as the myths of femininity, the endorsement of polygamy and the obsession with male children, as well as the most common stereotypes, depicting women as mothers, wives and daughters. Given the diversity of cultures, rather than viewing national cinemas as aspects of a single development, the author focuses on individual histories, traditions and social and economic circumstances as points of reference, which are examined in the context of social and political evolution and the status of women within Islam. Women in Islamic Cinema is a much-needed and timely work that will appeal to the curious reader as well as to the student of film." Publisher's description.‎

‎Die Karaz. Keramik von Tepecik in Ostanatolien.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (27,5 x 19,5 cm). In German. 502 p. B/w ills.

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In English and Turkish. [10], 142, [1] p., color ills. Ottoman ceramics embracing the Mediterranean and their reflections to the present.= Akdenizle kucaklasan Osmanli seramikleri ve günümüze ulasan yansimalari. In the considerably long time span from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century, when the Iznik, Kutahya and Canakkale ceramics were in production, the Ottoman Empire spread across three continents, and her galleons, galleys and lighters carried her flag on trade missions and voyages on the open seas such as the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Black Sea and the Indian Ocean in addition to the Mediterranean. Various types of imaginary ships in the Ottoman ceramics bringing to life the dreams of the masters regarding the far-away lands seem to be capturing an image only. The most important feature of the vessels, usually depicted without details, is their sails of various types, which led them to the open seas.‎

Smelled by sovereigns, this flower is the symbol of love, of belief and of beauty. It is the richest inspiration for all arts, the sultan of gardens and poetry and the eternal yearning of the nightingale. From the beginning of civilization the rose has adorned the lives of man. For thousands of years countless cultures have turned to the rose as a way of expression, they have held on to it, interpreted it, and enjoyed its beauty while enduring its thorns. Süleyman the Magnificent wrote poetry using the pseudonym Muhibbî and understanding the value of this special flower he placed it on the emerald throne of the meadow. 'The rose sits on the emerald throne and becomes a sultan It gathers all the sweet basil to commence the council.' Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar said of the rose, "The dream of eternity fitted into a moment." This book is written to provide a stroll into the imaginary and actual rose garden of humanity and enable the gathering of a most colourful bunch. Those who turn the pages will relish the rosy world of nature and roses, the history of the rose, the name of the rose and the smell and taste of roses; the rose in art and rosy pictures, rosy tiles and rosy fabrics, rosy carpets, rosy stones and rosy woods, rosy jewellery and rosy glass, the rose in poetry and the rose in music, wearing the rose and the rose gardens of our lives. With this book the writer of the TULIP book, Gül Irepoglu has taken a new look at the ROSE and embraced it.".‎

‎The prisoners of war in the Red Crescent archive documents.= Kizilay arsivi belgelerinde savas esirleri.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (31 x 22 cm). In English, Turkish and Arabic. 303 p., photos, ills. and documents. The prisoners of war in the Red Crescent archive documents.= Kizilay arsivi belgelerinde savas esirleri. The Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay, formerly Hilâl-i Ahmer) is a charity organization founded during the late Ottoman period on the model of the Red Cross societies. Its activities in the areas of medicine, care for prisoners of war, and other social services, particularly during the World War I period and the early years of the Turkish Republic, make the archives of this organization a vital resource for historians interested in medicine, public health, war, and charity alike during this formative period. The Red Crescent archives contain a variety of documents pertaining to health and health services in the Ottoman Empire and Republican Turkey. For the Ottoman period (including World War I), these documents almost exclusively concern budget and funding issues along with services pertaining to war, particularly the 1877-78 Russo-Ottoman War (93 Harbi), the Italian invasion of Libya, the Balkan Wars, and of course, the First World War. There is very little overlap between the collections of the Ottoman archives and the Red Crescent. In addition to offering a glimpse at late Ottoman medical institutions, social historians of the Ottoman Empire will also be drawn to documentation regarding Ottoman prisoners of war, which includes letters about and by Ottoman soldiers. The Red Crescent boasts over 300,000 POW cards from all sides of the conflict containing the names and origins of prisoners, their place of capture, and sometimes other biographical or health information. The collection also contain letters and requests from prisoners of war during the conflict. In this regard, researchers of other regions such as Europe or South Asia will find these archives useful as the Red Crescent was the intermediary between the Allies and Allied prisoners held in Ottoman territories...‎
