METIN AND, (1927-2008).
Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). Edition in English. 248 p., color ills. Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz. Coining the phrase 'bazaar painters' in a 1985 article, Metin And enriched our art history terminology with a new concept as well as offer a glimpse into the world of these artists: how they worked, what they drew, where their works are today and how they contribute to our study of history of art and culture. He continued to promote and popularise their work through books and articles published until 2007, at times repeating earlier content as required. Bazaar painters and their work were not initially identified as a distinctive genre; Franz Taeschner, the first researcher to publish a selection, felt no need to refer to them as anything other than 'miniatures'. Challenging this trend, Metin And set about the immensely difficult task of obtaining pictures of bazaar painting albums from four corners of the globe in order to illustrate a prolific series of essays and books. The second volume of Ottoman Figurative Arts, Bazaar Painters consists of twelve articles published between 1985 and 2007, a comprehensive introduction by Tülün Degirmenci, and a concise album. The pictures and inscriptions Metin And chased enthusiastically all his life are but the echoing footsteps of a book, one that was either never written, or somehow got lost before it could be published.

Eternal letters from the Abdul Rahman Al Owais Collection of Islamic Calligraphy, Sharjah. Translated by Dr. Irvin Cemil Schick.
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 21 cm). Color ills. 367, [1] p. Limited Edition: 1000 copies were printed. First Edition. Dozens of exquisite calligraphic works, some dating back to the ninth century, that have gone on display at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization give visitors insights on key periods of Islamic history. Over 90 Islamic calligraphy artworks are currently on display at the museum, which is located in Al Majarrah area, along Corniche Street. The exhibition, titled: 'Eternal letters: From the Abdul Rahman Al Owais Islamic Calligraphy Collection,' will continue until September 26 and includes Islamic calligraphy artworks characterised by the angular script known as kufi. Calligraphy is the highest art form in Islam and traces its roots back to the need to portray the Quran accurately and reflect its divine perfection and beauty in material form. The calligraphers' craft took hours on end of practical training that involved the preparation of writing materials, such as paper, inks, and the perfect calligraphic representation of individual letters (mufradat), as well as words and sentences (murakkabat). "Islamic calligraphy has always occupied a special place in Arab civilization and culture, and has been acclaimed around the world for its aesthetic and expressive nature," said Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, UAE Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development. "It is creative, precise and has the same aesthetic value as many of the great masterpieces.

Alakent Church: A Byzantine monument at Myra 12th-13th centuries.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). Edition in English. 269 p., ills. Alakent church: A Byzantine monument at Myra 12th-13th centuries. The presence of this small Byzantine church in the Alakent neighborhood of Demre has been known to archaeologists and art historians for quite some time. Revealing the structure from under the five meter deep alluvial fill in which it was buried was only possible as a result of the excavation work carried out in 2010 as part of the Myra-Andriake Excavations. The alluvial fill kept most of the aspects of the building such as mural paintings, roof tiles, facade decorations and spolia intact. The book was edited by the GABAM's director and member of Koç University Archaeology and Art History Department, Engin Akyürek. "The chapters of book are 'The Story of the Excavation' by Nevzat Çevik, the director of the Myra-Andriake Excavations, 'Myra: The Metropolis of Lycia', 'Alakent Church: Location And Architecture' and 'Conclusion' by Engin Akyürek, 'Architectural Sculpture' by Ayça Tiryaki, 'Wall Paintings' by Nilay Çoragan, 'Ceramic Finds' and 'Burials' by Özgü Çömezoglu Uzbek, 'Inscriptions' by Hüseyin Sami Öztürk and Christof Schuler, 'Conservation Treatments' by Sebahattin Küçük.".

Wall, arch, dome: Byzantine Istanbul in the eyes of Ottoman photographers.= Sur, kemer, kubbe: Osmanli fotografçilarinin gözüyle Bizans Istanbulu. [Exhibition catalogue]. Text: Samih Rifat.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., color and b/w ills. Wall, arch, dome: Byzantine Istanbul in the eyes of Ottoman photographers.= Sur, kemer, kubbe: Osmanli fotografçilarinin gözüyle Bizans Istanbulu. [Exhibition catalogue]. Text: Samih Rifat. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Istanbul's Byzan-tine monuments, as captured by Ottoman photographers, is their role as priceless documents in the city's history. The period between the second half of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century is marked by profound changes in Istanbul with respect to urban structure, historical texture and monuments. A careful eye readily notices the considerable transformations spread over a hundred, hundred and fifty years in Istanbul city walls, Galata Tower, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome area. These photographs are replete with valuable clues for today's researchers, restorers, architectures and urban planners. Nonetheless, there is something beyond the obvious in these images: Istanbul's remaining city walls, arches, and domes of a far away past continue to survive in another form of existence in these old photographs, which reflect an age closer to us in time, yet just as rapidly vanished. The discolored surfaces permeating an indescribable sense of the old add another layer, another epoch to the historical richness of the city. Comprised of a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, Wall Arch Dome ventures us into a journey in the same milieu and in a different time dimension. Yet, on this occasion, we find ourselves in an Istanbul more ancient, more distant than the Republican or Ottoman days; it is a Byzantine Istanbul of monuments, ruins and almost imperceptible traces from thousands of years past.

Riding the storm: The dynamics of Anglo-Turkish relations from 1918 to 1923.
New English Paperback Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 94 p. During the 19th century, British diplomacy towards the Ottoman Empire was based on rejuvenating and revitalising the administration system with a series of social and political reforms. Although British attitudes began to transform during the Near Eastern Crisis of 1876-8 and the Anglo-Ottoman alliance was interrupted, the policy changed dramatically on the eve of the First World War. Nonetheless, major events such as the Chanak Crisis in the British Cabinet, the occupation of Constantinople and Smyrna and finally the Turkish Nationalist Movementunder the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk effected the dynamics of Anglo-Ottoman relations. This book examines the ground of these policies and analyses how thisstorm was over in British foreign policies towards Turkey between 1918 and 1923.

Controlling substantial territories in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and North Africa for several centuries, the Ottoman Empire constituted animportant place in the history of many Christian communities and theirChurches. The Gallipoli Campaign in the Great War.= Büyük Harpte Çanakkale Seferi. Prep. by Murat Karatas. Translated by Elif Berfin. The Gallipoli Campaign took place in 1915 and 1916, between Ottoman empire and the Allies; and witnessed the toughest naval and land battles of World War I. The Allied Forces were aiming to capture the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits, and then push Ottoman Empire out of the war. Whereas Turkish Army was there to defend the straits, and to stay in the war, by any means. Bursali Mehmed Nihad (participated in these battles as captain in the first year and continued as major in the next) presents an important first hand study that recites the Gallipoli Campaign, which caused hundreds thousands of casualties for both sides.
