OTTOMAN VENETIAN WAR Balthasar JENICHEN engraver
Warhafftige Conterfettung der Turckischen Armata von Galleen und andern Schiffen Dreihundert wie solche dess 1570 Jars in Ordnunge wider die Venedische Lendt ist aussgefahren
Nuremberg 1571. Engraving printed on two sheets of laid paper joined. Engraver's monogram at the lower left. Early manuscript caption in English in the lower margin. Plate mark: 11 x 16 inches. Sheet size: 14 5/8 x 18 3/8 inches. Tear extending from the right margin closed with small void in excellent facsimile small worm hole within the image. Very rare German news-sheet map depicting the Turkish fleet invasion of Cyprus in 1570.<br/> <br/>Exceptionally scarce engraved German broadside map depicting the Ottoman fleet sailing to Venetian-controlled Cyprus in 1570. The early English manuscript caption in ink just below image reads: "The representation of the Turkish Navall Army in ye year 1570 going forth to meet the Venetian fleet." Cyprus then under Venetian rule was a strategic point for controlling shipping and trade in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Ottomans ruled by Sultan Selim II had long desired the island. Following a series of warnings and demands the Ottoman fleet commanded by Müezzinzade Ali Pasha and Lala Mustafa Pasha sailed for Cyprus in late June 1570. Depicted here the Turkish fleet was composed of an estimated 350-400 ships and upwards of 100000 men. Following sieges and massacres at Nicosia Kyrenia and Famagusta the island was taken by August 1571. Although the invasion was long-heralded the Venetian fleet failed to prevent the invasion or the subsequent fall of Cyprus to the Turks. However they subsequently raised the support of the "Holy League" of the Catholic maritime states in the Mediterranean and defeated the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571 off the western coast of Greece. The victory of the Holy League prevented the Ottoman Empire expanding further along the European side of the Mediterranean though did not end their possession of Cyprus. Jenichen who signed the map with his monogram 'BI' was the leading German publisher of news-sheet maps. Jenichen and compatriot Matthias Zündt took particular interest in the conflict and produced views and maps of it that equaled and surpassed those of their Italian counterparts. Given their ephemeral nature all are rare and desirable. We can locate only one other example of this engraving appearing at auction in recent times Sotheby's London 29 April 2014 lot 157 £60000.<br/> <br/>Hollstein XL B 128; G.K. OTTOMAN ENDOWMENTS.
Peygamberimiz efendimizin mektubu "The Letter of Our Prophet and Master".
Istanbul: Evkaf matbaas 1928 CE / 1344. A lithographed reproduction of the famous letter from the Prophet Muhammad to al-Muqawqis commonly identified as the Patriarch of Alexandria at the time of the Arab conquest of Egypt. Discovered in 1850 in a Coptic monastery in the Egyptian village of Akhmim the letter calls on al-Muqawqis and his followers to accept Islam. After its discovery it was taken to the imperial capital at Istanbul and its publication was sponsored by the Ottoman government's department of Endowments. The reproduction is accompanied here by Arabic and Ottoman transcriptions and by an Ottoman description of the circumstances in which the document was discovered. According to scholars the letter itself "has been recognised almost from the beginning as a fake on both historical as well as palaeographical grounds" Oehrnberg. Single leaf folio 340 x 205 mm. Extremities a bit chipped or creased minor soiling or foxing in places one small hole affecting printed area in lower left corner. A very good example. K. [OTTOMAN CAPITULATIONS OF 1740].
Kitabi-i ahdname-i hümayun-u saadet-makrun.Paris or Istanbul 1816 or 1835. Large 4to 31.5 x 24 cm. The text of an Ottoman-French treaty set in the Ottoman Turkish alphabet a version of the Arabic script. Half calf marbled paper sides gold-tooled spine.
45 1 blank pp.Very rare edition possibly the first of the Ottoman capitulations agreed between a French envoy on behalf of King Louis XV of France and a grand vizier on behalf of Sultan Mahmud I of the Ottoman Empire on 4 Rabi al-Awwal 1153 AH 30 May 1740 CE. We have located only three other copies: in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek and Harvard's Houghton Library. This particular agreement comprises eighty-five articles nearly all concerning the granting of trade economic and legal rights favourable to France. It was mostly a renewal of articles previously agreed upon but includes some newly introduced articles. The capitulations are a type of treaty by which foreign people are given certain privileges mostly relating to trade and transportation over or even at the expense of native citizens. These treaties did facilitate mutually beneficial commercial and financial contracts for the parties involved considering an evolving global marketplace for example by minimizing the transaction costs taxes etc. of their exchanges. The foreign power often bought their influence benefitting local government officials partly at the expense of the people they were supposed to govern."The Ottoman-French Treaty of 1740 marked the apogee of French influence in the Ottoman Empire in the eighteenth century. In the following years the French had an unchallenged position in Levant trade and in transportation between Ottoman ports." Olson p. 75. The Ottomans first made capitulations to France in 1569 first as a strategy European powers used to eliminate the risk of falling victim to Ottoman raids and later to gain influence over Ottoman trade. These Ottoman-French treaties were renewed and amended several times from the 16th to the 19th century until they were abolished as a whole with the Treaty of Lausanne of 1922-1923 which also ended the Greco-Turkish War and defined the modern borders of Turkey.Binding shows signs of wear slight foxing throughout otherwise in good condition.l Europeana 1 copy Österreichische NB; WorldCat 612814438 1 copy Harvard and 165919643 1 copy Bayerische SB; on the treaty: Olson Robert. The Ottoman chief calligrapher Hamdullah Amasi
Enam-i sherif Quranic collection of several Suras signed in gold Hamdullah el Amasi the head calligrapher of the Ottoman calligraphy school began in the16th century
<p>16x11 cm. Contemporary Ottoman binding tooled in gold with Shamsa on each board and flap. Surah headings in gold and colors golden durations between verses and all pages out-ruled in gold. 16th c. Signed Hamdullah el Amasi. The signature due to the Era of the calligrapher and the writing character is same of the calligrapher's. Sheikh Hamdullah was born in Amasya a north-central town in Anatolia. His father Mustafa Dede was a Sheik of the Suhrawardi order and had migrated from Bukhara in present-day Uzbekistan to Anatolia. In Amasya he studied the six scripts under the tutelage of Hayreddin Mar'asi. He learned the traditional method of the old masters but struggled to reproduce it. While studying he met Bâyezïd the son of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror who was a fellow student and the pair became friends. When Bâyezïd assumed the throne in 1481 following his father's death he invited his friend Sheikh Hamdullah to the capital Istanbul. Hamdullah went on to become a master calligrapher at the Imperial Palace. In 1485 Bâyezïd II acquired seven works by the great calligrapher Yaqut al-Musta'simi. Bâyezïd then encouraged his court calligrapher Hamdullah to devise a new script inspired by the acquisition. Hamdullah regarded al-Musta'simi's work as unsurpassable but at Bâyezïd's insistence Hamdullah reluctantly agreed. Scholars have suggested that Bâyezïd's enthusiasm for a new script was symbolic of his desire to establish a new empire and a new dynasty. Hamdullah underwent a period of reclusion during which time he claimed that a prophet taught him the new scripts in a vision. He ultimately recodified and refined the nashk style of calligraphy originally developed by Yaqut al-Musta'simi. Hamdullah's scripts were more elegant balanced and legible. From 1500 the majority of Q'rans adopted Hamdallah's new style which became known as the Ottoman style or "Seyh's manner'. For this he is often considered to be the "father of Ottoman calligraphy". His many students spread his style throughout the Ottoman Empire. His style endured for 150 years making him one of the greatest Ottoman calligraphers of all time. As much as two centuries later students of calligraphy such as Hâfiz Osman continued to copy his works assiduously as part of their training. He devoted his whole life to the art of calligraphy continuing to produce works well into his 80s. He produced 47 Mus'hafs book of Quran and innumerable En'ams Evrads and Juz' a number of which are held in the collection of the Topkapi Palace.12 His inscriptions also decorate the Bâyezïd Firuzaga and Davud Mosques in Istanbul and the Bâyezïd Mosque in Erdine. His son Mawlana Dede Chalabi became a calligrapher after studying with Hamdallah his father and Hamdallah's daughter whose name is unknown married a calligrapher by the name of Shukrullah Halife of Amasya who had also been one of her father's pupils. Hamdullah's grandsons also became calligraphers; Pir Muhammad Dede d. 986/1580 son of Hamdallah's daughter and Dervish Muhammad d. 888/1483 son of Mawlana Dede. As his reputation grew many myths to his abilities outside calligraphy sprang up. It was said that he was a great archer falconer swimmer and even an extraordinary tailor. He died in Istanbul in 1520 and was buried at Karacaahmet Cemetery in the district of Üsküdar at Istanbul. Surviving examples of his works are held in the Topkapi Collection.</p> hardcover

MEHMED EMIN ALI PACA; OTTOMAN RAILWAYS.
Documents relating to Baron Maurice de Hirsch's concessions to build and operate the Ottoman Empire's railway lines from Constantinople to Vienna.
Turkey: 1874-86. Constantinople to Vienna Fascinating group of documents relating to Baron Maurice de Hirsch's concessions to build and operate the Ottoman Empire's railway lines from Constantinople to Vienna dating to the time the agreements were revised 1872 to when he was seeking to extricate himself 1887: 1. Covering letter to the annotated Actes 1874 document addressed to Baron Hirsch 1887 2. Actes 1874 covering the revised 1872 agreements annotated in 1887 for Baron Hirsch 3. Further amendments from the Ottoman Minister of Works for Hirsch c1887-88 4. Agreement to advance funds to the Sublime Porte to finance a military response to Bulgarian annexation of Eastern Rumelia 1885-86 The Ottoman rail network was constructed to boost trade maintain imperial control and facilitate Hajj and relied to a great extent on foreign private finance and expertise. First ventures in the 1860s included the Chernovoda to Constanza line connecting the Danube to the Black Sea and the Rustchuk to Varna line taking cargo to the Danube and Black Sea. The latter built by a British group was owned by the Rustchuk-Varna Railway Company under a 99 year concession which leased it in 1873 to Austrian banker Baron Maurice de Hirsch 1831-1896. In 1869 the Porte granted its most important concession to Hirsch to build 2 500 km of main and branch lines connecting Constantinople and Vienna; and in 1870 Hirsch founded the Societe Imperiale des Chemins de Fer de la Turquie d'Europe to build the lines and Compagnie pour l'exploitation des Chemins de Fer de la Turquie d'Europe to operate them. The venture was financed by the Turkenlose 3% Turkish Lottery Bond designed by Hirsch himself and German and Austrian bank loans. Over the 99 year concession Societe Imperial would receive 14000 francs rent per completed kilometre from the Porte and 8000 from the Compagnie. Grand Vizir Mehmed Emin Ali Paca 1815-71 a moderniser who wanted closer ties with Western Europe signed the agreement for the Porte. However he died in 1871 and his successor Mahmoud Nedim Paça 1818-83 whose appointment was influenced by General Nikolai Ignatieff Russia's ambassador at Constantinople preferred a link with Russia via Romania. Mahmoud Paca's efforts to cancel the concession were however unsuccessful due partly to Hirsch's appointment of Ralph Earle former British MP and secretary to Lord Beaconsfield who renegotiated the agreements signed off on 18 May 1872 item 2. By 1872 four disconnected lines "stumps" had been built and the Turkenlose had not raised sufficient funds. Under the new agreements the Porte took back the building concession including the most difficult and costly parts in the process reducing the distance to 1250km with the Societe Imperial as its contractor and cutting the Compagnie's concession from 99 to 50 years. Small archive of original documentation as above. Overall in very good condition. unknown

First edition of the first accurate Ottoman general map of Central and Southern Iraq Kuwait and Khuzestan southwestern Iran; the authoritative map used by the Ottoman army for strategic planning during the "Mesopotamia Campaign" where Ottoman-German forces mounted a unexpectedly strong resistance to Britain's invasion of Iraq in World War I. Examples of the present map were used by Ottoman commanders who oversaw the successful Ottoman-German defence of Baghdad at the Battle of Ctesiphon 22-25 Nov. 1915 as well as the capture of the main British army at the Siege of Kut-al-Amara 7 Dec. 1915-29 April 1916. With the text entirely in Ottoman Turkish the map is based on the British War Office's "Lower Mesopotamia between Baghdad and the Persian Gulf" 1911 which was itself in part based on Ottoman sources. Both maps were dramatically superior in all respects to previous efforts forming the culmination of over three generations of reconnaissance capped by critical late-breaking discoveries. Some light stains in the margins and the lower-right quadrant but generally in good condition. [OTTOMAN EMPIRE].
With a hatched roman capital used as an initial. Set in roman types with extensive italic. Modern boards covered with chemical-marbled paper black morocco spine label.
8 pp.Extremely rare contemporary account of the audiences of the first Ottoman ambassador to the Holy Roman Empire before the Emperor himself and before Prince Eugene of Savoy both in the year 1719. This signalled the beginning of the attempted transition from war to negotiation in the ever difficult relations between the great Islamic and Christian powers. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI 1685-1740 conducted the successful Austro-Turkish War against the Ottoman Empire in the years 1716 to 1718 lead by Prince Eugene of Savoy 1663-1736. After the Treaty of Passarowitz ended the war on 21 July 1718 the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III sent Ibrahim Pasha to Vienna to serve as Ambassador and Charles VI sent Count Hugo von Virmont to Constantinople as Ambassador to the Sultan. This exchange of ambassadors was celebrated with a grand ceremony near the border where the two ambassadors met on 15 June 1719. The present publication begins by noting Ibrahim's arrival in Vienna on 14 August and gives an account of his audience before Charles VI on 4 September. The last two pages with their own drop-title give an account of Ibraham's meeting with Prince Eugene of Savoy on 7 September. Both accounts include lists of presents exchanged. Eugene was to receive Ibrahim Pasha again at his newly built Belvedere palace in Vienna on 2 October 1719.We have located no other copy of the present edition but the ICCU records one copy of an undated edition. It is also a 4to of 4 leaves but the fourth leaf is blank and it apparently omits the account of Ibraham's meeting with Prince Eugene which appears on the fourth leaf of the present edition. WorldCat records one copy of a German edition of the account of the meeting with Prince Eugene and three copies of a German publication on Ibrahim's arrival in Vienna.Somewhat foxed but otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed preserving all deckles. An important document of the Ottoman Empire's relations with Christian Europe and a window into the opulence accompanying the diplomacy.l Cf. ICCU RMLE047805 1 copy of undated ed. omitting meeting with Eugene of Savoy; KVK same copy; WorldCat 1 copy each of 2 related publications in German; for the background: C.W. Ingrao ed.
